Rock legend Billy Thorpe was cremated today following a private family funeral in Sydney.

While details of the intimate ceremony would not be released, a spokeswoman for Thorpe's manager and long-time friend Michael Chugg said a service had taken place this morning in Sydney.

The musician is survived by his wife of 35 years Lynn and daughters Rusty and Lauren.

"Billy has been laid to rest in Sydney," the spokeswoman said.

She said Thorpe was cremated following the service.

Some of the biggest names in Australian music, including Olivia Newton-John, INXS' Garry Beers, Col Joye, Jimmy Barnes and John Paul Young, yesterday paid their respects yesterday at a service for Thorpe, who died last week from a heart attack, aged 60.

More than 7000 fans, family, friends and music industry identities attended yesterday's service.



I am so glad I went to see him at a charity gig in the Tamburlaine Vineyard in the Hunter Valley of NSW this January. We had he best time and got to hear Billy play songs from his yet to be released album "Tangiers".

Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs were renowned for being the loudest band ever - if they were told to turn it down - they'd turn it up and the concert was certainly no disappointment, Rock music blasted out across the valley that night and it was one I will treasure for a long time.

Goodbye Billy. We'll Miss Ya. Just don't upset too many people in heaven when you push them aside and tell them "I'm here to take over the band."
