Christmas Gifts

So I know that Christmas and other seasonal events are about 5 weeks away but for some people Christmas shopping and random buying has already started. Influenced by TV commercials, shop window advertisements and Internet sites prompt us to usually spend more than we have to.
Also with the current credit crunch in the UK, which is also affecting other countries, Christmas spending isn't going to be as hot as last year.

I just like to know if you have started buying Christmas presents for family and friends, you think it's too early for the seasonal festivities, or if you are a complete "Bah, humbug!" to it all.

I haven't started gift shopping yet, I normally wait until December to start looking.

What gifts (if any) have you bought so far?

I don't specifically go out looking for things to buy my family and friends for Christmas, but if I see something that fits the bill I'll get it there and then. I've got maybe 80% of my family and friends stuff, but nothing for my wife as of yet. That takes a bit more than casual browsing ...

I remember a few years ago I saw a book my dad would like in September, for £18.99 in hardback, so I got it thinking I was planning well in advance. I felt quite pleased. But the price went down as Christmas got closer, so with all the stores trying to get people to buy stuff it ended up at around £4.99. I felt like a real cheapo ... not that money matters, but I didn't want him to think I'd only spend a fiver on him! :S

For the past two years I bought my dad an aeroplane DVD as he is an aircraft enthusiast. Now every year about November time, the company that I buy from send me a leaflet to buy another for this year. I got it this morning. So I guess I know what I'm getting him this year, I just haven't bought it yet.

I've got to the age now, where every Christmas the biggest surprise for me is not whether I get socks or boxers, but what colour they'll be. Black or white.

Ohh the suspense!

Argh, I don't like Christmas, it's horrible. People should just be nice all the time... Anyways seeing as this isn't the case I thought I would get my friends blliinngg necklaces with their initials or something dumbb like that. I'm leaving the shopping for my family until the 23rd of December because I'm going to big shiny terminal 5 at Heathrow on my way out to seee them so I can get duty free :D Also if I leave myself time I'll never make my mind up and end up with nothing, pressure = results! I don't want anything for christmass either, there's nothing I need and the things I want can't be bought with money hahaa..

I haven't done any shopping yet. We usually wait till right after Thanksgiving. I sometimes go shopping on Black Friday but not always. I think we are going to this year unfortunately! I hate shopping...I would rather do it all online! Though my husband says he already knows what he is gonna get me and is gonna buy it soon....no clue what it could be though cause I haven't asked for anything and have no idea what I want cause there is nothing I really need. =P

Oh I thought if I o pened the thread I'd get some xmas pressies :'(

I don't buy many, mostly to my mother, and half brother, grandma and a friend. Wow, now it sounds like much, I'm worried 0_o

Oh Edit: Seems like some people do want to give pressies! xD I love pressies. I'm doing drawings for some of my isketch friends. I also send cards to friends out of the country... I like it, some are xmas cards, some I do them myself and some are postcards... I love postcards and collect them <3

I am making a Cartesian Diver for my girlfriend, which I am very pleased with. Except for the actual diver part. I can't make anything small enough that looks good and barely floats. >.<

I have my siblings and grandparents sorted. But what to get for my mother? Eek. I think I'll just do drawings/similar for my friends. ^^

I thought that would be the most difficult part. I hope that she appreciates the time and effort you put in :)

Heh, we saw one at a university open day for the maths department, and we had lots of fun with it. It's just something to pick up and look at instead of working. :P

We're getting most of our pressies online, and getting them delivered to my parents place, so we don't have to bring an extra suitcase on the plane at Christmas! I'll just have to wrap them really quick on Christmas eve. Pressies include - Alfred Hitchcock DVD boxset (mum), cheese knife set and a couple of bottles of plonk (dad), book on Genealogy (sis-in-law), Dora the Explorer jewelry-making set and 'The Velveteen Rabbit' book (niece), a book by Jeremy Clarkson (bro-in-law), and some boxes of German gingerbread (various friends and non-immediate family). We've also got a board game (sis-in-law, German side) and a card box with some sets of decent playing cards (my parents-in-law).

I can't think of anything for my two sisters, and other sister-in-law though, and my husband is always awkward to buy for. He said all he wants is a wallet. Great.

You do know that it's customary to give a wallet with some money actually in it?

I didn't know, but my mother-in-law gave me one for my birthday (fnarr fnarr) with a £1 coin in. Apparently it's lucky.

Wow Vik, it looks like you're more-or-less sorted for presents. How very organised of you

As Deadlock says, you could always fill your husband's new wallet up with money...
For richer for poorer

Then you both get a fab present

I bought my first pressie today :) My niece who's 7 will be getting a pink princess costume. She loves pink and loves being a princess. I'm surprised she doesn't already have one...

Hmm.. I see what you guys mean, a bit like starting a new current account without all those forms to fill in...

:P

Ooooh, now here's an idea - I could put some theater tickets in the wallet, or something like that...

Wow, new forum slogan:

'Log on and be inspired!'

Actually, it's not quite his style, so I'm changing my plan slightly to the 'heavy metal concert ticket' way of thinking :P

'tis true My scottish mother in law is a stickler for this - apparently, if you don't, it means that you will have money troubles for the duration that you own the wallet/purse.

As for me - I have done about 60% of my gift shopping already. If anyone has any ideas what to get a man who likes gadgets - please inspire me!

I'm a man. I like gadgets. Erm ... does he have a games console or is he all grown up?

If he's got one, get him some of these video screen glasses so he can play PS3 or whatever on a 60" screen in front of his eyes :)

Linky here http://www.firebox.com/product/2029/Vuzix-iWear

PS if my wife reads this, you can get me some. Ta.

This looks quite cool.
There's always something of this type that you could get.
These are always fun!
I like Deadlock's idea too. Might have to get me one of those :)
