This thread excites me, it gives me the opportunity to recommend some great pieces of music.
Well, being an orchestral trumpet player (not professionally) I would have to say that 'classical' (baroque/classical/romantic etc.) music is one of the greatest things in the world. And if I didn't 'have to' say it, I would anyway. The fellow/fellowess who listed Bach's B minor mass is a wise, wise person. Truly one of the greatest human creations of all time. Some guy once said something along the lines of "Who needs psychotherapy when we can listen to the mass in B Minor." That sums it up. I'll list some others I like: Mahler's 2nd Symphony 'resurrection': Possibly my favourite symphony from one of the greatest romantic composers. It almost makes me believe there's a God; it's that powerful. Like most of Mahler's works it's rather disturbing when you understand his state of mind. It's a beast of a symphony (like 1.5 hours long) but so absorbing it goes like that *clicks fingers*. Plus the last 5/10 minutes makes you feel like the world has opened up to some magnificent light. I urge you to listen to it (or infact any Mahler), it really is a life changing experience. Especially live. Bruckner's 7th: It's a toss up between this and Mahler 2 for the top spot. Another mind blowing symphony which everyone must hear. Also, If I'm not mistaken it was one of Hitler's favourites. I think Hitler would only allow people to listen to Bruckner, Beethoven and Wagner. Which bring me neatly on to: Wagner's Operas: They're all pretty special. Ignoring the fact that Wagner was basically a pre-Nazi Nazi he raised the bar for opera, and to some degree story telling - a surprising number of modern day stories are based on his operas. Tannhäuser is one of my favourite. Listen to the overture - beefy. Tchaikovsky's erm... 4th, no 6th: Basically, Tchaikovsky wrote 7 incredible symphonies and it's pretty hard to chose my favourite. 4 holds a very special place in my heart and nearly always makes me cry. Beautiful. Romeo and Juliet is also rather wonderful. Chopin: Man, this guy was depressed, but it seems that it's almost a prerequisite for great music... His preludes are awesome. I could go all night listing my favourite works but I think you get the idea. Oh, you should also listen to Telemann Trumpet concert. |
