Help me decide
I'm looking for a job in the summer, and I found this camping in Luxembourg that's looking for an employee in their camping shop.
The owners are Dutch, like me, and many of the guests are too. Thing is, I've never stayed on a camping before. I adapt easily and I like adventures, but you know, you work and stay there for over a month. Sounds like a fun challenge or a bad idea? Help me decide!

Luxembourg has the same climate as the Netherlands and England, Tasha :D
It's also Europe's Florida, when it comes to old people and the pace of things. It does have cool castles and many forests though.

My mum thinks it's a terrible idea.
I also just sent an application out for night porter at a local hotel. I bet she'll love that one too! And yeah, I thought Florida was known for its pensioners?

Hey, that sounds like quite an adventure :D If I were in your place, I'd totally go for it, because it is for only a month. The experience could be awful, could be okay-ish or an excellent one. But I'm sure it will be an adventure that will stick with you. One to tell the grandkids? lol. Also, i've had a few friends tell me that little experiences like these can help a lot with jobs, etc when you're much older (depending on where you head career wise, of course).
You never know, you might miss out on something that could end up meaning more to you later (I have a few regrets of my own.. :P) Anyway, good luck with your decision :) |

See, I knew my mum was mad.
I'll just apply, let's see what'll happen. It's the 'but you're my little boy'-syndrome that's in the way, I bet ;) 2.0: Sure, if they pay for the aeroplane. Otherwise I'd spend all the money I'd earn there on the ticket!

If I want to go, I'll go, that's not the problem.
A bit of support from the home front would be appreciated though :D

Unless your mum has another reason for not wanting you to go, I would go for it, after all it's only a short term job, and if you don't like it, well you can just leave.
edit: make sure you can get on isketch/forum from there, are you taking a laptop or does the campsite have an internet cafe ? think about it, how would you cope without isketch ? |

My mum hasn't got a say in it, really...It's just never good when somebody you're close to is against something you're doing.
Actually the main reason that I want to do this is to get away from the every day things and do something completely different. So I'll be avoiding internet as much as I can if I end up going Oh and thanks for your input everyone. I appreciate it :)

You need to go for it! All of your experiences, bad or good, end up being fond memories and chances for learning. You could end up with some really good stories. There's plenty of time to "play it safe" when you get older. And...yes, Florida does have a lot of retirees, who have fled from the colder climates of the northern USA, but they don't get in the way of having a good time (except for the bad drivers). There are plenty of young people also, and lots of fun things to do, with beautiful beaches. Just think of the camping experience as an adventure, and as long as you have the right attitude, you will be fine. It's only one month, you can do it.

Sounds like your mum is just doing what all mums do when their babies want to wander away from the nest, They get overly protective and don't want their kids to go to foreign countries.
You could always tell her you are applying for a job as a ski instructor in the Snowy Mountains in Australia and then when she realises that being in a BENELUX country - you are at least in the same hemisphere - and maybe she won't so against you going.

It's kinda funny, I wander away from the nest all the time, but she hasn't changed one bit on that.
Hey, a ski instructor in Australia. That sounds pretty good! ;) I haven't skied in over 2 years though.

Dont miss an opportunity to travel and work anywhere...parents will understand lol ... good luck x

Like many others on this thread, I say go for it! Life has many things to offer, and take them while you are young enough to enjoy everything. It's all about what you make of the experience, and when it's done, you can pat yourself on the back. As you get older, the opportunities to become adventurous don't come along that often ie: family life, ties, kids etc.
I regret not travelling when I was younger, taking maybe just one year out from the boring routine of my home life, to go and see other countries. I know for sure, if my son was old enough to travel, and he wanted to do it, I'd back him 100% Of course, all mothers have the instinct to worry but to deny you the opportunity of taking time out, in a relaxed atmosphere and probably great surroundings would be wrong. Just think of all the new friends you could make!! Go for it kiddo!! |

Thanks for your words!
All I can do is wait for a reply from the camping owners, haha. (Kiddo?)

i think you should go for the camping thing, friends son went to america and did a simular thing a few times and loved it.
failing that you could always make stuff out of old things you find on the street and sell it to passers by (not only creative but good for the environment recycling)......joke BTW |

Go for it. Do this sort of thing while you can cos fairly soon life will snatch these opportunities away from you. Its a cruel twist that one day you could be spending all your days trudging to an office to sit in front of a computer listening to penises.

Well, I didn't even get a response, so either their email address is broken or they are just rude (in that case, good thing they didn't respond!)
But,... I am going to Edinburgh next month. Just for a little break though, not to work.
