Our Childhood Days
Just recently I've been reminiscing about the fond memories I have from my childhood days. Maybe you have thought about what you used to do as a child, maybe a particular profession you wanted to undertake or just distinct memories that you wish to post about. It's good to reminisce about previous experiences whether they be happy or funny or whatever, so why not start a thread about it?
For me, I used to love those summer days back when I was at school. All those water pistol fights after school at various friends' houses. Good times.

I think I must be one of the most nostalgic people on the planet.
I've always missed the younger days. When I started highschool I started to miss primary school; when I got further up in highschool I started to miss primary school and early years of highschool; when I left highschool I missed everything :P Just a couple of days ago I saw a picture of me and my family when I was about 6-7, all looking epically 90s and was quite sad that life will never look like that again. :P There's tons of specific things I miss, but it's a pretty big list :) |

Heh. I was talking to someone just the other day about this. We were talking about how our kids were into all these gross things.........that made us feel squeamish, and I was saying how one of my favourite things as a child (growing up on a farm) was when Dad killed a chook for tea.
He would chop the head off, and yes, the image of a headless chook running around is quite true......but then he would cut off the feet with his axe, and three of the four of us kids would fight over who got the feet. The only one who didn't was my sister, who hated the feet. But.....I wanted the feet because....when you pulled the tendons, you could make the claws retract....so I always wanted the feet, so I could chase after my sister with the foot extended out in front of me, pulling the tendons and making big loud clucking noises like I was a mad chicken chasing her....... Oh joyeous days.

I'm now officially scared of you.
Thinking back to the old days it seemed that school holidays were always sunny and lasted forever. FOR EVER. EVERRRRRR. That's what I miss. These days all we get is weekends off work, looking forward to a couple of weeks in the sun at the most. * Deadlock sad

Saffron, that cracked me up.
I miss the excitement I felt when I heard the ice-cream man coming up the road. I miss having a bed made up on the sofa for me when I'm sick. I miss the crazy laugh-a-minute relationship I had with my dad. I miss feeling excited when I get mail. I miss school. I miss just assuming that the money would never run out, that nothing bad would ever happen. I miss the sense of wonder I often had at new things and new experiences. You know - that's something that kids really take for granted. That big 'WOW' that escaped you when you first see a computer game, or when your dad brings home a new car, or when you first go on a airplane. There's too few 'wows' in my life these days. I miss the cartoons! I miss jelly, and I wish that when you come home from someone's birthday, that they'd still give you a little plastic bag full of goodies. I sometimes wonder why anyone would want to grow up - but then I remember my husband and our life together and all the things that the future holds, and I'm glad I'm not a kid anymore.

Lol, I still get excited when I get mail. Only 'cause I know my mail is usually uber cool and has no bills :p Quote:
One of my childhood things I remember from school was being car sick. We'd always go off on long coach journeys to Epping Forest, Museums and random places of interest. I remember our school nurse always giving me a 50p and she told me if I held it tight during the coach journeys I wouldn't feel sick. She was right because I was never sick. Then I got to secondary school and in year 7 on a visit to Kent I nearly freaked out over not having that school nurse's 50p. I survived the coach journey there and back and then I realised the school nurse was BSing. I feel like such an idiot lol. Like magic 50p coins really exist! :p Good thread debbie :) Last edited by *AJ*; 19-03-2009 at 01:42 PM. |

Looking back- I did love some aspects of childhood- but most of my happiest memories involve my parents/home life and family friends. The nostalgia associated with things like- adding people you haven't seen in 10 years on facebook, watching disney movies and going through baby photos/pictures is so bittersweet, but in a good way <3. Having said that, my primary school life was pretty traumatic :( so I'm really glad that phase of my life is over. Highschool and especially uni life was/is a lot better though :)

Ah, wow. I have so many good memories. The kids I used to be friends with down in Norfolk. The random trips to Poland to see family. The farm I lived on when we moved to Yorkshire. Playing out with my friends in the fields. Learning to drive a tractor (and subsequently causing thousands of pounds worth of damage after accidentally crashing it into the milking barn). The lazy weekends away to the beach with my friends in high school. I think out of everything, it's the people I miss the most. Those friends I rarely see now, ones I've never really fallen out with, simply moved on I guess. Ha, I've had so much chance to think back recently.. I'm getting far too soppy. :P

Hmm, unlike marauders, I think my elementary (primary?) school years were the best years of my life. In school, it was all a blast, loved my classes, loved my teachers, loved the playground... XD Outside of school, I recall having some trouble with some older kids and popularity etc. I think I've always questionned how people in a society interact with each other and I remember there was this one girl who was a few years older than us in our building and for some reason, whenever people wanted to go out to play in the evening the first question was always "is so-and-so coming to play today?" That really annoyed me so I got into a tiff with her xD That was somewhat traumatic but anyway xD I still hear about her now and then coz her family are friends with mine; she's all successful and everything.
I think the thing I miss the most about childhood is the fact that the future never really mattered. There was never a sense of, "omg I've aged another year, most people my age have done this or done that and I'm still here, oh noez". When I was younger we were all on the same road and moving at the same pace and there wasn't anything to change the pattern of our lives. Life is just stressful now. There's so much to think about, so many decisions to make :( But hmm, okay, the things I miss (without getting too deep)? + ice cream scoops in hot dog buns <3 I never see these around anymore. Might've been a special of my ice cream man :))) + ring lollies + playing hide and seek, tag, marco polo in the pool, stuck in the mud, and all those other kid games (I'm the only person I know who'd still play those, lol... ah, I must be the definition of "child at heart". Although I played hide and seek with my flatmates a few years ago... lol) + my book collection (a lot of it got given away when we moved) + field trips There's so much that was lovely then.

I loved infant and junior school. Most of the memories I have seem to be of mucking about - playing kerby, whacking each other with slap bracelets, generally just pissing about with my mates in the yard, playing bully and at least one of us getting injured every day, oh, and kiss chase and tag.
One of my best memories of junior school though is the day our classroom ceiling caved in due to too much rain/us boys poking it with the blackboard rule. The ceilings in that place were weird. If you poked them, they were like elastic. Well, except the day we poked a hole through it and the water came gushing down. Boy, were we in trouble lol. Did anyone else play kerby? I just mentioned to my friend and he has no idea what game I mean!

Yeah - did you follow the rule that if you got a kerby, you were allowed to go halfway across the road to try and get more bonus kerbies?

I was home schooled when I was younger because my family and I were always traveling. We had a family band, that is how we made a living. We even had a producer at one point and sang on stage with Charlie Daniels. That was exciting. I miss going around with my family making music! I really enjoyed and loved that part of my childhood!!!!!
I miss going out front with my sister and my friends and making mud pies and creating new concoctions to try! I miss making a lemonade stand and sitting out on the side of the road for hours hoping someone would come by and buy some lemonade from us! I miss going to neighbors houses asking if we could mow/rake their lawn for a couple of bucks and then getting to walk to the store and buy some candy with our hard earned money!

Yep, we did that. Also played the rule that if the player in the middle missed the kerb, the other player could get the ball and try and hit them as they ran back to their side for bonus points.

Lol.. my reaction to Vik's comment about missing the excitement of mail made me say to myself "I still get excited when I get mail!".. and then I read AJ's response. lmao. Ah, we're sisters that love our mail, I guess :|
Umm.. memories... I miss secondary school. :( Primary school sucked 'cause I was bullied throughout it, and had no confidence in myself at all. Secondary school was better because it was a fresh start, and just completely different. I had friends, plenty of friends, and became very confident. I felt I was a person that everyone wanted to talk to. Popular without being loud, and in everyone's faces all the time. Just a background person. I just really miss the fun times we had in secondary school. It was a cross between innocence and maturity (without heavy responsibilities). I loved most of my lessons, and I loved going to extra clubs during my lunch breaks, lol. I miss riding my bike up and down the street outside my parents shop when I was around 6-9. lmao. Back then you could do it without worrying about getting kidnapped. *sigh*. Kids these days are missing out on stuffs like that where I live. The streets are just too dangerous now. :/ I miss going to theme parks, funfairs, etc as a big family! It's harder with most of us married off and having kids. Ah, I miss a lot of things XD |

Ah I agree about the streets not seeming as safe now Nerdy. There's a bunch of kids who live on the street I live on, yet I rarely see them playing out. When I was a kid, we were hardly ever indoors! Always riding about on our bikes, rollerblading, playing football and cricket in the middle of the street (safe eh? lol).
