A plea for help.
Vik Vik Çevrimdışı 05-07-2007, 09:48 AM

Hi everyone!

This thread is about the report post button, as found at the top right corner of each post. I'd like to ask for your help.

Please do not be afraid to use this button if a post has upset you on the forum, or if you find it to be a good example of something which upsets you, or which you find innaproriate.

I know some members are reluctant about using this button because
* They don't want to be seen as grassing up fellow members
* They don't want to be considered whiners
* They are unsure how it works
* They don't want to get someone in trouble

I understand all these reasons, but I'd ask you to try to overcome them in light of the positive things it can bring.
* I (can't speak for the other mods here) check out the post reports before doing anything else, so it's the fastest way to get my attention
* It tells me that a post I was unsure of has made others unsure too.
* It cuts down feelings of resentment that someone might have about a post
* You will get feedback from one of the mod team, letting you know your views have been heard and considered - let's you know we're actually doing out job!

This really is a very useful tool which I have come to look at differently since becoming a mod. Reporting is not being nasty, underhand, going behind someone's back etc, it's helping to keep the forum friendly and clean. Of course, some of the complaints will not be upheld, and we will explain to you why - so just because you saw fit to complain, doesn't necessarily mean getting someone into trouble. So please use it!

If someone doesn't know how to use it, or hasn't used it before, please feel free to warn this post, and I will reply to you to tell you it was successful.

Thanks!

As a user of the post report button, I want to explain how I feel about viks comment about reducing feelings of resentment.

There are alot of times that I want to write a full-on response to someone's post because it has offended me alot but if I did, I know that it runs the risk of being worded wrongly, taken the wrong way etc etc and generally, for me, it's a bad idea to reply to it.

Instead, I find that after flagging it up to the mods and telling them my feelings about it, I find that myurge to reply personally to it decreases an awful lot. I find it very helpful

Good idea Vik.

You can even watch the update on a post you have reported. see below.
I had to report a post, it was one of my own was an error on a thread that couldn't be editted by myself, I must say it was good for one, to see how quicky it was dealt with, also was nice to see the updates on the post. It gives peace of mind, that should you need to report a post you know it's being dealt with

Well if I see something that annoys me then I usually just reply to it for myself but did finally use the report button for the first time last week and got a nice response from one of the mods.

I can see it getting a bit irritating though to keep getting fobbed off, so will probably stick to fighting my own battles. How about if I report AND reply - yes I think I can live with that

That's part of the problem - people think they will get fobbed off, and they don't.

I forgot to add, if you really don't want to warn and don't want to potentially start world war three by replying, you can of course PM a mod :)

I've never used it here, but on forums in general I only use it for misplaced content (but here I just PM one of the mods) or highly offensive material. Haven't seen any highly offensive material here (but that could be due to quick moderating!), so I haven't seen a use for the button.

And, you know, if someone places advertisements on a forum (spam). I also use it for that.

Just to add: There may be times when a mod can't do anything unless a post is reported.

Don't moan about nothing being done if you don't actually report it either.

And we will flirt..err.. PM back :) Just to add to what Vik has said, you're more than welcome to PM me for clarity on a situation before you want to make a formal report. Or if you're offering food and a can of coke, I'm cool with that too.

Also a point that I want to add is that we do talk about most reports together if the solution isn't easy, so if an outcome isn't exactly how you wanted it, please know your comments were not overlooked, but rather a line needs to be drawn somewhere, and we do try the very best we can! :)
