OK - I keep meaning to make a post in here but it's always too boring. I live in a small village between Stuttgart and it's airport. The weather here is better than the UK's in the summer, but worse in the winter. There are a lot of open spaces, greenery and parks. This region of Germany is known for car manufacturers (Mercedes, Porshe, Smart, Chrysler) so some parts of the city is not too pedestrian friendly cause they really love their cars here.
As you'd imagine for Germany, everything is quite well organised and efficient. The buses are clean and run on time and everyone likes to do things properly.
If you imagine the UK 20 years ago, you get an idea of what it's like here. The technology is very modern or course, but the people, ideas and ideals are quite old fashioned. Family is very important and there is a real sense of community. There aren't any chavs or anything, there is not really a class system at all. The people here don't like to waste their money, and they generally work hard.
Although there is a strong community feel, people aren't overly friendly and you don't generally stop to have a chat with the women in the bakers etc in the same way I would in England. We have supermarkets here, but more often people shop in all the individual high street shops like the butchers, bakers, chemist, etc.
I find life here different to in England. Some of it good, some of it bad, some of it frustrating. For example, no shops are open on a Sunday which is nice, but which can be a bit annoying if you really need to get something.
Basically it is just a bit old fashioned, and conservative, but quite a comfortable life.
Oh, and Stuttgart is also famous for getting bashed about by England fans in the last world cup. D'oh!
