Second Life

This is a game I kept seeing adverts for, so I made a character today. Does anyone here play it? I haven't a clue how it works! TBH First Life is hard enough without making another one :P But still, if anyone here plays, let me know :)

* MsNerdinator is having a feeling of deja vu more than once today.

Our conversations keep coming onto the forum, Vik. lol.

I'm off to join Second Life because I've been meaning to for a while. I've heard a lot about it :) Not sure if I'll have the patience, but worth the try..

Here you go, stormy.. Second Life
Edit: whoops, Vik beat me. XD

I've played this, but the older versions, the newer version requires video acceleration (i.e. a massive video card) and tons of ram in order to run properly. You create your free account, download the client, install the client, run it from your computer and web interact away. It's kinda fun, but it sorta sucks you in as like in the real world, everything that's fun costs you money, what were they, linden dollars or something. And these have to be paid in real money via credit card and such. It's not too expensive, but like ebay, pringles and heroin, once you pop you can't stop.

It's fun for a while, just to chat for free if that's what you're after, but you can create yourself a life there. There's famous users in SL. Saw this discovery channel show dialy planet where they presented an asian girl in the states who's a singer, and she podcasts her stuff into SL in a makeshift concert and she's pretty famous, i think that's a neat aspect of it. You can own stuff, create stuff, sell stuff too. You buy the tools for scripting and then make stuff to sell to other people. It's kinda fun, but i got bored as some communities are really classist and if you don't own land they shun you. But that's my experience, maybe today it's a little different. Mind you i played like 2 years ago, when SL wasn't even half of what it is now.

Oh monkeys, I need more RAM :(
I've managed to download it all, and start the game. I've got my name, character, appearance, etc. But it is working a little too slow for my liking. And it's lagging me elsewhere. Looks like I need to get that extra bit of RAM that I've been meaning to get. Like you said, 2.0, it needs a lot.

I have to say, the game looks fun. The graphics are especially great! :)

Lol, also at first, my character appeared undressed! Modesty issues eat your heart out, XD Same thing happened with a few of the other characters, and it gradually appeared. I wasn't sure if that was a slow computer problem though. It reminded me of something out of The Terminator, lol.

Not necessarily, i've been reading up on the issues. It may just be lagging, too many people online, servers can't keep up.

Way back when they required credit card or sms checking of your identity things worked OK. I kinda remember having to check my identity. About a year ago they opened it up via email verification, and hundreds of thousands joined up no problem. Of course, this brought issues because the servers couldn't handle so many accounts, and paying members were angry because freeloaders were getting the same basic benefits as paying members and so on. It got complicated, apparently even riots were organized by different organizations on SL.

But yeah, ram can make the program to run real slow.

Just like iSketch's Cyber rooms, there are various seedy sides to SecondLife.

Various NSFW articles here, where El Reg sends in a reporter to err... explore...among other things.

The reporter's Avatar seems to have had (very slightly) more clothes than Nerdy's one...

lol, JASR!

And, 2.0.. I think my issue is a RAM one because it lagged everything else I was using on the computer. And.. my... type..ing.. was.. coming.. up... this.. slow...ly... :| And it was back to normal after I quit the program.

I already know that I don't have enough RAM to deal with the amount of cr.. um.. useful things on my computer. RAM, RAM, I need me some more RAM. What you said was interesting though. Helps to know little things like that.

Oh err JASR. Well, I haven't figured out how to actually speak to anyone yet, so if people tried to cyber me they were disappointed!
