Ahh now the definition of "country" comes into the equation, as Western Sahara doesn't govern itself.

db1986
28-01-2009, 11:41 PM
Are you sure this is the correct answer?

Yes. The absent letters are F, H, I, J, O, P, Q, V, W, X and Y.
The only one which I can see might be the problem is the W.
The only W on this map (http://mongabay.org/images/african.gif) is Western Sahara. That is, however, not the official name for that country. The official name is Sahrawi Arab (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sahrawi_Arab_Democratic_Republic), and so adds W to the list.

Saffron
28-01-2009, 11:50 PM
Hmm ok.
The official name for Algeria is People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, so take P off
The official name for Angola is Republic of Angola, no more A's, so add A to the list
All the E countries have official names that don't actually start with E, add E to the list.
etc.
nvm

I think what db means is the name by which the country is officially recognised, e.g. by the UN, which says, for example, Cote d'Ivoire rather than Ivory Coast. Although I made lots of coffee, the boss was nice.
Which of these phrases is the correct grammatical translation?

A: Obwohl ich habe viel Kaffee gekocht, war die Chef nett.
B: Obwohl ich viel Kaffee gekocht habe, war die Chef nett.
C: Obwohl ich habe viel Kaffee gekocht, die Chef war nett.

db1986
15-03-2009, 06:48 PM
Sorry for the delay on this.
The correct answer is B. Obwohl ich viel Kaffee gekocht habe, war die Chef nett.

In German, the verb is always the second word in the sentence, except if you start with word "obwohl" (although). In this case the verb comes at the end of that portion of the sentence. There are two verbs before the comma. The verb "haben" (to have) is the main verb so it appears directly before the comma. As for the second part of the sentence, the first part of the sentence is regarded as the first "element" in the sentence, and so the verb "war" (was) comes directly after the comma in second place.

Using MS Excel, which of these three formulas could display the first four numbers of a numerical string if a cell value is 1, find the fourth character in the same string if the same cell value is 2, finds the remainder of the string divided by a second cell value multiplied by a third cell value if the first cell value is 3, finds the sum of the first, second, third, fifth and eighth numbers if the cell value is 4, and adds the first number of the string, three times the first cell value, two times the third cell value, and three the second cell value if the first cell value is any other value? (Ignore the spaces in the formulas, the forum limits the number of characters per word to 50)

I want you to tell us what the whole question means, and how that formula works it all out. I want a detailed explanation, please. Tell us what the string of numbers is, and what the other results are. You've troubled us a lot, and I never understood what the question meant because of the way it was poorly worded. I figured out the thing about the MID function - that's how I worked it out. But I'd like to see you work it all out. Only then shall I choose my next category. I'm sure I deserve a right to know what that formula really does, along with the input and output.

db1986
13-09-2009, 05:22 PM
OK, here is an explanation of the correct formula.

As I have already mentioned, the MID function takes 3 parameters. The location of a string
The first character in the string on which to start copying
The number of characters in which to display
The IF command also takes 3 parameters. A condition
An action if the condition is true
An action if the condition is false
Using Excel, it is possible to have up to 7 nested IF statements so that one can select between multiple options. The format of that would be... A condition
An action if the condition is true
A second condition
An action if the second condition is true
An action if the second condition is false
The position of the second condition means that if the first condition is returned as false, then and only then will the second condition be tested.
For example:
Is A1 larger than 5?
"Cell A1 is larger than 5"
Is A1 smaller than 1?
"Cell A1 is smaller than 1"
"Cell A1 is somewhere between 1 and 5"
Now if you combine these together you can create an conditionally true statement dependant on several parameters. The IF statements select the correct case, and the MID functions select the correct format for displaying parts of the string.

Answer A is not correct because its MID function parameters are not in the correct order.
Answer B is not correct because its MID functions do not contain enough arguments (parameters).
This leaves answer C remaining which is correct.

You could find this out quite easily by typing each of the formulas in turn into Excel and by creating nominal values for the cell values and for the string.

I hope this explains it :)

Edit: The reason for the (slight ) rise in difficulty is that I cannot seem to separate you two players, so I will have to think of more difficult questions.

I can see what Foxy means maths. Not trying to start a fight or anything but THERE is a difference between BLUNTNESS and having SOME sort of TACT when dealing with others too. (Not just referring to this post here. Several several several.) I know not all people are 'people persons' and some are candid and so on...all of our characteristics and personalities differ BUT try to look at it in the eyes of others too. When you think of it like that, being blunt and throwing in some tact goes a long way with people. You dont need to kiss butt at all..I am not saying DO that...just use something that SEEMS less harsh. For instance "You've troubled us a lot" could have been said more like "the question you posed as made us work very hard ..." and "I deserve a right to know what that formula really does" probably would come across better as "I think I (we all) would like to know how this formula really does work..since we all worked very hard at it..we've (I've) earned it (explanation)..'

See the difference? Its just in wording. Things on 'the net' can come across as RUDE becuase we actually cannot see facial features, hear tone in voice, ect. It's just in how you word it that can make all the difference sometimes.....it may not SEEM rude to you..how you have worded it TO YOU but a pause to think how others will see it may be all that is needed. Yes to an extent, who cares what others's think but at the same time we want this board to run smoothly too..different personalities in this large dysfunctional family happen and like any family, we must work to get along as well ....keeping it (the board)running smoothly and fun for all is our common goal...it should be least wise anyways.....

Maybe it is said the LONGER way around MATHS.. I know it is something you've harped on me before (long posts and all) BUT sometimes those FEW extra words can make all difference.. it really can.

(end threadjack. back to my regularly scheduled net surfing and annoying of you all.) (if something else needs to be mentioned to me. please. feel free to post on my wall or PM me) ILU ALL

If you were to start in a place in Australia with the postcode 6000 and travel for about 250 miles, you would approach a town with the same name as a US town. Now if you were to find this US town and travel WNW for a few miles you will find a town which has the same name as a European capital city as spelt in English. If you were then to go to this European capital city you would find two lakes near to it. Adding together the number of letters in each of the 2 cities, 3 towns and the 2 lakes you have visited on this journey, how many letters would there be in total? The correct answer is A. 44

If you were to start in a place in Australia with the postcode 6000 (Perth) and travel for about 250 miles, you would approach a town with the same name as a US town (Albany). Now if you were to find this US town (Albany) and travel WNW for a few miles you will find a town which has the same name as a European capital city as spelt in English (Roma/Rome). If you were then to go to this European capital city (Rome) you would find two lakes near to it (Bracciano and Martignano). Adding together the number of letters in each of the 2 cities, 3 towns and the 2 lakes you have visited on this journey, how many letters would there be in total? (Include the towns and cities in all countries)

Perth Albany Albany Roma Rome Bracciano Martignano = 44 letters

" "none is" vs "none are"
by Mark Israel

[This is a fast-access FAQ excerpt.]

With mass nouns, you have to use the singular. ("None of the
wheat is...") With count nouns, you can use either the singular or
the plural. ("None of the books is..." or "None of the books
are...") Usually, the plural sounds more natural, unless you're
trying to emphasize the idea of "not one", or if the words that
follow work better in the singular.

The fullest (prescriptive) treatment is in Eric Partridge's book
Usage and Abusage (Penguin, 1970, 0-14-051024-9). In the original
edition Partridge had prescribed the singular in certain cases, but
a rather long-winded letter from a correspondent persuaded him to
retract. "

 http://alt-usage-english.org/excerpts/fxnoneis.html

So that means there were only 26 errors... AAAHHH!

Once he has his money changed, he then drives to his local market to purchase some fruit before travelling home.
At this market, 1 Apricot costs 21 US¢, 9 Limes = 6 Oranges, 4 Apples = 3 Bananas, 16 Lemons = 7 Mangoes, 7 Bananas = 5 Peaches, 12 Raspberries = 9 Strawberries, 45 Grapes = 6 Plums, 3 Peaches = 6 Lemons, 21 Strawberries = 3 Watermelons, 6 Mangoes = 2 Pineapples, 8 Plums = 10 Limes, 2 Watermelons = 8 Apricots, 5 Oranges = 10 Raspberries and 1 Pineapple = 48 Grapes.

Mathematics

A. $7.05
B. $7.08
C. $7.12

Explanation: If Rob earns €1.71 every 15 minutes, he earns €17.10 for 2½ hours work.
Converting his money, €17.10 = 1197 Rupees = Aus$28.50 = ¥2280 = £15.20 = US$22.80

Using the conversions, the fruits are sold at the market for these prices:
1 Apricot = 21¢
1 Watermelon = 84¢
1 Strawberry = 12¢
1 Raspberry = 9¢
1 Orange = 18¢
1 Lime = 12¢
1 Plum = 15¢
1 Grape = 2¢
1 Pineapple = 96¢
1 Mango = 32¢
1 Lemon = 14¢
1 Peach = 28¢
1 Banana = 20¢
1 Apple = 15¢

Adding Rob's desired items together:
$0.96
$0.30
$0.96
$3.36
$0.90
$0.90
$1.40
$0.96
$1.08
$0.90
$4.00 +
$15.72

$22.80 - $15.72 = $7.08

Please don't become an ass over this, you're a bad loser with these kinds of things and you know it. So please calm down, you've finished your go, I wasn't taunting you I was just saying. You did well, you played a good game, and you lost due to not answering for whatever reasons but like I said before, db can't just go, oh maths hasn't sent me an answer so I've got to stop and wait till you answer because he did that before, and then the game just died.

Just shut up, Maths. The rules are the same for everyone, and there is no conspiracy against you. He didn't "grab an opportunity"... it's just the way that it works.

Nonetheless, well played up until the point that you turned all petulant and stupid and that at the end there. And well done jen. :)

Maths I tried to be fair to everyone. I have screwed up a couple of times (apologies again to Fox for messing him around on his go), but I would never be unfair in the way of adjusting the rules or somehow making the game easier for any one player in particular at any time.

The time limit is there for a reason and you knew that you had an extra couple of days due to me explicitly saying, "You have 2 extra days," and clearly changing the due date for the question on the original post. You even posted to acknowledge that you saw the time extension (due to my poor addition skills ).

Having said that, you have played an excellent game. Both of you lasting that long is admirable. You are most welcome to join the next game, I have already PMed all current players with the details of the next game. Please remember that as soon as the Single Player answers, all remaining players will have 1 complete day to send in their answers via PM. The next question is displayed below.

No fun now. I might win with the rest of the forum. And I seriously thought it was Thursday night because of the 1:40 am time. I'm just frustrated because I wanted to win this competition very badly. And I believe that time deciding a winner is unfair. I didn't even get a chance to answer. He even got rid of one of my lives that way.

Maths, I think that the best way to debate this, if you feel the need to further address the issue with db, would be to do it in a PM. Speaking for myself, I've seen far enough of you being a sore loser. So you missed the deadline...it's entirely understandable!

The fact that you got through those questions alone should be a pretty good accomplishment in your mind. Jenni worked every bit as hard as you did, and you both did very well. Now we're onto the next round...that's the beauty of GAMES. People lose, people win, and everyone has fun along the way. Right?

plus, i think its better that there are time limits.. that way if someone disappears for a longlong time, the rest don't have to wait for the 1 to come back and answer.. plus, it helps the one (it helped u too, maths) people were eliminated from the 100 because they missed the deadline , it does go both ways <3

mathsssssssssssssssss <3 dont get upset XD i didnt kick ur butt :P ignore anyone that says that :) <3 it doesnt matter so much anyway :) tis a game<3

Not meaning to sound rude or anything but it is possible that we move this "discussion" to the Chat thread (http://www.isketchforum.net/1-vs-forum-t2996.html)? Otherwise this thread will clog up full of replies, other players may not see the questions directly and the chat thread will become redundant.

Assume that:

You draw twice
No-one skips their turn during the game
No player goes on away during the game
No player leaves or enters the room during the game

If there are 6 players, you can receive a maximum of 14 points from the other 5 players (10 points for player 1's guess, plus 4 points from all other players). This will give you 28 points for your two draws. You can then receive a maximum of 80 points from the other 8 rounds, totalling 108 points.
