Um.. did you hear that the London 2012 olympics logo has been unveiled...? (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/olympics_2012/6718243.stm)
And I'm putting this in random funnyness, because as someone who is kind of specialising in logo designs, that had me chuckling. I'm not sure if I should be taking them seriously. God knows how many thousands that took to create.
I've seen sooo many design logos by professionals, but this one is just confusing me so much that part of me is believing that it's April Fools or something :P I'm not normally one to criticise someone's work - to the extent of laughter, anyway. If this was a logo done by a non professional and for something not as "important" as the Olympics, I'd be cool with it. But 1. It's for the olympics. And 2.. I can imagine the costs into designing this were sky high...
That's the best they could come up with? Seriously? :S Maybe if I look at it long enough, it will grow on me. Like moss. lol.

Jeesh. Tell me about it. WTF is up with that logo. My wife charges $100 dollars to think of and make a logo for any company. Customer just has to give her general parameters, like a colour or a theme, and she goes on and makes 3, 6, 10 and sometimes 15 proposals of different logos. I'm assuming that this is sort of what happened here. But wait. It's. fuchsia. And. yellow. And wait. It makes no sense. Where's the theme in that? How's that olympic?
I mean, how hard is it?

lmao!
I actually heard on the radio about an hour ago that they were trying to reach out to young people with it. I wasn't totally paying attention - I didn't realise it was the logo, just some other design part of it. But yeah, the guy describing it was patronising to the point where it was just funny. He's all "We want to connect with the young people. We want to speak their language."
Loool.
You may be able to hear something on a Radio 1 podcast or something.

That's sort of what I do. I'm not quite there though yet, but that's basically a side dish to my job. I bet your wife is thinking that she can do something so much better, which I would quite happily believe! This designer has totally forgotten the theme. I mean, the olympic colours are all.. white. I'm not sure who gave the go ahead, but...
Sorry olympic committee, you must be stoned. Yeech.
Totally! lol.
Also, thanks for posting the previous logos. Seeing it against that ridiculous one just made me realise how bad it is. It doesn't even represent London in any form. Pink? If they wanted to go with colour, they could have chosen grey for what London actually looks like :P If they really wanted to relate to the younger generation, they would have been better off doing a competition to find the best logo design amongst the younger crowd. I'm sure they wouldn't have found a design worse than that one. lol, this has given me confidence as a designer. I now know that I don't stink.
And tasha, your science teacher is such a cheat! XD

Well, I have a different take on this brand sample. Although it isn't very attractive at the moment, I somehow get the impression that this logo/brand is meant to evolve with time and as more join. This could actually be a brilliant concept. If this graphic evolves, it will attract a lot of attention as people will notice and wait for the next addition to the brand.
I don't like the way it looks right now but will hold off judgement until we can see where it goes. It's a bit flat at the moment but my guess is it will gain deminsion if not graphically, conceptually. Adverts in all types of media that have 'told a story' by using ongoing series, have been quite successful in holding the public's attention and continuing to remind people of the subject at hand.

Regarding this Olympic 'logo'... can't you see a bunch of old men in a room going.. 'let's do something contemporary.. that shows London to be 'hip'' lol. It's horrendous... and I hope it's not the final one. The publicity video done to get us the Olympics was outstanding... where did the people who made that go???
Worst comes to the worst... Fen doesn't live far from there... he could go and draw over the top of the posters .
My random funnyness.... My daughter leaping about 4 feet off the ground when a spider crawled down the wall next to her!
Sheesh.. it's just a spider lol

Spoken like a designer.. I hope it does change a lot, because I find it quite disturbing right now. I actually did something similar with one of my logos once ('telling a story' style). That is, I shocked my client.. :embarrassed: It was terrible, but I was holding back with the final ideas/concepts to the design. I got an email telling me that my designs were.. to put it politely, rubbish. lol. I quickly emailed back with what I really had in mind.. And they bought the logo. Haa! Never going to do that again though!
I'm hoping they're toying with our minds and will throw out a muchly better design.

Just a spider? :o I opened my bedroom door this morning, half asleep, to find a huge spider above my head. Little devils!

By nerdy's definition, what is a huge spider?

About the size of my baby finger..
But, but.. it was fat. And heading for my bedroom.
Does size really matter? Oh, don't answer that.. rhetorical question, I assure you. lol.
Oh, and 2.0, your post can be considered as spam, ya know.. ;)

Going back to the olympic logo, we were looking on the internet earlier about it - I actually hadn't noticed that the blocks are in the shape of the figures '2''0''1''2' ... If you find the part where people have submitted their own ones, the first one is absolutely brilliant, it would be much more appropriate.

Yeah, I noticed the 2012. It is clever.. but looks terrible, lol. I also had a look at the ones that people submitted. Cool stuff :) Do you mean the ones over here? (http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/6719747.stm) I like numbers 1 and 7 a lot. Number one looking really cleverly done!
Also on the link that I posted, there is a poll on the right where you can rank the logo as 'gold', 'silver', 'bronze' or 'wooden spoon'. Majority votes have gone to 'wooden spoon'. Rofl. About 80%+ at the moment.

Yupp I 'wooden spoon'ed it too, was about 84% in favour of that opinion when I did it, and there were around 5000 votes.
And yeah, that's the link I meant, & I liked number 7 too altho it's probably too complicated for a logo. I liked 9 as well, but maybe just as a billboard ad or something, 'coz that's definitely too much for a logo.
i like the 1st logo of the second gallery (http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/6722205.stm) by Richard.

Oh wow! That's brilliant!
It's the only particularly good one in that gallery though..

Wow those are nicer. I think the 1st one is outstanding too, as well as #4, 8 and 10. Those look more like olympic logos than the one that they have now. I too hope it evolves into a really neat one.

I love that first one, as well as the first one in the first gallery I showed. Both are very clever and hit the nail. I bet those will still end up being better than the finished logo.
This shouldn't really belong in the funnyness thread now, but hey, it just seemed better suited here because of the continual comments. Did you hear that there were Epilepsy Fears Over The Logo? (http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/content/articles/2007/06/05/2012_logo_epilepsy_feature.shtml) Wild, eh.. Talk about messing up.

I must admit, I can understand that. I have eyes that are very sensitive to light/movement and can have a huge migrane at the drop of a hat and I couldn't watch it for more than 2 seconds without feeling queasy and needing to look away. I know I spend my life doing that but there's times it's worse and that was one of them. I think it's so silly that they haven't thought about that.
Oh and a very quick, short rant. When we went to the cinema it has warnings about 28 weeks later having strobe lighting but had nothing about the amount of flashing in Pirates 3
Back to funnyness...
./slap people not thinking
Whatever happenend to common sense?!
Edit: I just looked at the links with alternative logos. I think some of them are really good and show some well thought out concepts. However, I fear that someone let a n00b out...

I like how they used landmarks. It's not one that hits you right away, so maybe they can make the letters more obvious somehow, but I think it's really clever, and they could have a running theme of spelling out London in all sorts of different ways.

Yeah, it's failed the test for photosensitivity. I just don't understand it. If you're creating a logo for nationwide, that's an essential point. I have got vvvery sensitive eyes, but luckily it wasn't so bad for me. I feel sorry for those people who have a seizure just by looking at a logo. It's actually quite frightening :/

I like that design a lot and how it discreetly says 'London'. I don't think it's good for a logo though, because it's too complicated, etc. But it could work well for a banner or billboad or something. Looks nice. Mind you, I think anything would be better than the sample they showed us :S
Edit: Oh Em Gee!
They're keeping the logo?! (http://uk.news.yahoo.com/pressass/20070612/tuk-new-olympic-logo-stays-says-jowell-6323e80.html) Quote: "The logo will be the logo for the Olympic games". Oh and is it worth, £400,000? "I think it was, yes". I think you're right, 2.0. They are stoned. She lady goes on further to say, "call me unusual, but I think it's terrific". Unusual indeed...

Holy crap, that's a crapload of money. But then again I guess the author is not getting royalties for it, just one big paycheck, which makes it quite a small amount of money, compared what the organizers will get for charging license on the rights to the freakin thing. It is a global event after all, and it's still 5 years from now.
