Hey everyone :)

I think the last time we had an iSketch tournament for us forum members was back in August last year. So perhaps we should have another? In the past we've had Blitz! tournaments, Team tournaments, and even even a Tandem 3 word Big Pic one. (well it was just one round, but still, great idea Lisa :smile:)

We haven't had a tournament as yet which features specialty wordlists, such as History, Geography, Science, Music etc, so maybe we could include that element to it.

As I'm going to be on holiday this week, it will probably take place at the end of June or beginning of July, depending on how long it takes to organise.

If you are interested in joining this tournament, feel free to post your tournament ideas and available times around the end of June or beginning of July :)

I will be up for it. My schedule is a bit tight working, studying, and trying my very best to have a social life, so I might have to withdraw depending on what time things are at. And as for wordlists, i am up for anything. What about two word big pics? those are always fun to draw.

I loved Dean's tourney :biggrin: I remember the times when I stayed up to like 1-2am on isketch just for it..

I would like to play but I'm going on holiday for 2 weeks around the time you mentioned so would depend how late and early into June and July it was!
Maybe you could tie it in with the Dux of the Forum thingyy you were doing and have the word lists of the topics in that if you wanted speciality ones. Unlike everyone else I'm rubbish at Easy now because I haven't really played there since they changed all the words :(

I think the Dux is more than a little dead. from what was submitted to me...I think there were only 2-4 people that actually bothered to play, everyone is too busy for a long competition like that nowadays :(

I had a little think about it on holiday and, judging by the responses, most people will be free to play in July. Perhaps we could have a couple of heats like in the Double Trouble Dash tourney so that people from different timezones or with varying availabilities can play, and then finish with a final.

I'm still keen on some more specialised wordlists mixed with standard lists, but instead of having "knowledge-based" lists such as History, Music, Science and what-not, maybe we should have more word-based lists such as Palindromes, Phrases and maybe even Spelling.

OK, here are a few ideas for the tournament.

Dates:

Each heat will consist of 10 rounds of each of the 4 wordlists shown, therefore each heat will have a total of 40 rounds.
The wordlists will be played back-to-back and in order, with a short break in between each wordlist.
Each player's scores from each wordlist will then be summed, and the top two players by score sum will be invited to play in the final.

Any additional suggestions/preferences to what I have put here are very welcome.

If you guys and girls could select which heat(s) you are available for and the numbers of the times you can make, and then Jen and I can sort out who participates in which heat.

Eg:
Heat 1: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
Heat 2: 13, 14, 15
Heat 3: 20, 21, 22, 23, 24

hmmm weekends are always iffy because i dont know my plans as of yet... but tentatively for any of the heats:
11, 12, 13, 14.

Sorry but the summer is tough due to work for me, so if those times dont work out for other people dont worry about working around me, I can just participate in a different tournament when its school time and i have more flexibility in my schedule.

Ahah hmm I can't be certain of when I'll be available either, I suppose heat 1 or 2 would be best for me as I'll be back at uni by August. I have no idea what times and days are best though as work is a bit unpredictable atm.

Yeah, maybe those Blitz! special rooms are a bit excessive. I may just change the Blitz! aspect to one of the Easy lists. I'd like to keep a little bit of some peoples' wordlist preferences such as Easy, Blitz!, Palindromes and Tandem, as well as not making each heat too long :)

Sure, anyone who wishes to just watch is welcome, whether they are a member of iSketchForum or not. If you wish to invite people, you can do so either before the tourney starts, or during the breaks in between each set of 10 rounds. If you are simply watching, just stay on away so you don't appear in the draw order :)

Yeah I'm interested but again it depends on the times + dates. I think it'll probably work out badly for me as I work evenings.

I'll be setting up a provisional table for who will be attending which heat and the times of the heats in the next couple of days. If you haven't given me your preferences by then, I'll assume you can make any times. Don't worry if you can't play where I place you though, as it will only be a provisional setup.

Due to heat 1 currently being in 2 days, I propose that it be moved back a week, and I have amended the timings post (www.isketchforum.net/showpost.php?p=187767).

Edit: Also, I'm going to change the wordlists slightly. I don't really want to kill you guys by giving you Blitz! Anagrams or Blitz! Palindromes so I'm going to make the first rounds Blitz! instead. Again, view the original post (www.isketchforum.net/showpost.php?p=187767) to see the amendment :)

As much as meds will hate me saying so, I do not believe palindromes is the best idea for a tournament wordlist. I fact I don't think i'll play if that's in, the others shown so far are fine though. I know you are trying to be different with wordlists...But I don't think that works unless you truly have some sort of a team tournament with substitutes. Either way good luck with that.

I did try out the Spelling wordlist last night, and it seems quite similar to the Expert list. Some words are quite long in syllables, just like Expert, and others are perhaps shorter but in general more difficult to spell.

Don't forget that there is a difficulty setting in UCRs now, so we could always set the diffculty to allow only the easiest words, and filter out words like the 13-worded palindrome I saw once :)

Nah I'll pass, someone doesnt like me causing a stink about it. Change it back to Palis for medsy, or she'll crack it at me:twisted:. Btw can you restrict the amount of words displayed on that list as a majority of the list is 6+ words from memory.

You haven't actually said anywhere that you're organising it too. I assumed you are but wasn't sure, so you got the (special) parentheses :)

OK, seeing as we have no apparent problems with times and the first heat is only a few days away, I will set out a few instructions and guidelines for the tournament.

Tournament Player Instructions

1. Please check the time carefully and arrive promptly onto the iSketch server, using your usual iSketchForum name. You will receive an invite into the tournament room.
If you arrive early, you may use this time to get some last minute practice.

2. During each heat there will be a set of 4 different wordlists, each containing 10 rounds, therefore each heat will contain 40 rounds in total.
Each player will draw twice per wordlist, except for the Tandem lists where each player will get 4 draws.

3. Upon your turn to draw, you may Hint, but not SKIP. Done cannot be used. With regards to letters, normal iSketch rules apply. If you do skip your word, the number of rounds will decrease by 1, meaning that you will lose the chance of drawing.

4. Between each wordlist there will be a short 5-10 minute break so that Jen and I can add up the scores and edit room parameters for the next wordlist.

5. You may invite guests into the room either before the tournament starts or during each break between wordlists. Please do not invite guests during the active part of the tournament.

6. Have fun!

Do you know your time in relation to US time zones?
Heat 1 is 2:00 pacific, 3:00 Mountain, 4:00 Central, 5:00 eastern.

Just find your nearest town or city and you'll have your local time. You can also check relations to UTC. The UTC on this site is the UTC I've used in my posts :)

Bad luck Fox on the Blitz! round. The nature of Blitz! means that one can make up a big lead or a big deficit which is quite hard to turn around in later games.

Heat 2 is coming up fairly soon, the guidelines set out here (www.isketchforum.net/showpost.php?p=188166) will still apply, and Tandem 2WBP will be changed to Tandem BP in order to be consistent from Heat 1.

Edit: The chances of getting a tie-break between 2nd and 3rd place are very slim. In this unlikely event, Jen and I will draw 11 rounds of Blitz!, with an agreed chosen wordlist from the two tie-break players. The one who scores the most points will go through.

Heat 3 is coming up this Saturday, and as we had a few switches from Heat 2, I have moved both Mato and storm as both of you couldn't play. This means that there are now 6 people waiting to play in Heat 3.

As it is not possible to determine an exact time for the final from all the finalists' availablities, I propose we have 2 semi-finals, followed by the final. Each semi would have 4 people and 8 rounds per wordlist. The wordlists for the semi-final will be the same as those for the final. Based on the available times given to Jen, I have calculated the date and time of 2 semi-finals. As shown below for semi-final 1, there is a slight problem with timings for two people. For the one available up until 3pm, if you can move later by 1 or 2 hours it would be helpful :) For the one available after 3pm, if you could move earlier by 1 or 2 hours, that would also be helpful :)

Anyway, here are the proposed dates/times for each semi.

As this timetable stands, it is very difficult to shift people between each semi, as these semi times only fit with the finalists as shown above.
Also, the estimated time for each semi will be about 1 hour.

OK, this has really been dragged out too much for me. I wouldn't have taken Mato's place in July if I had known this would still be going on in late September and possibly October.

Beyond next weekend I'm going to be too busy to commit to any of this, so on the basis that I wouldn't be able to make the final if I got through, someone else may as well take my semi final place.

ok. im sorry about the whole time thing. but it really is impossible for this to happen on one day. everyone had conflicts with each other, some people even had the exact opposite of timings for others. yeah. ok. i get it. conflicts will happen. but seriously. db and i tried. we thought about having the semis on the same weekend, but that failed as well.

gt can take nh's place, as his score was only one point difference from belli in that heat anyway, if gt would like to. (Edit: I'm not mad at nh..i understanddd what you mean, i get it :)

Regarding the semis/finals part of the tourney, Jen and I have tried our best to fit everyone in as best as we can. It is a shame that we couldn't head straight for the final but life, as always, gets in the way of tournaments :biggrin:

I think what nh is getting at is the actual heats taking like forever. I mean it has taken almost 2 months to play all the heats and, for quite a lot of people, September brings busy times. The reason for the extended heat duration is that people said that they would be more available at particular times in the year, hence why I tried to spread out the heats. I'm sorry it has taken so long.

Anyway, if you are definitely sure you cannot make it nh, then I will agree with Jen and ask gt to take your place :)

For the semi-finalists, the top 2 from each semi will go through to play in the final. We'll try to make the final the following weekend, as I know that some people will be heading back to school/college/uni :)

Hopefully we shouldn't need any reserves this time as there are only 4 people to arrange for. If we need them though, I'd say we'll do the same as for the semis and have the other 4 semi-finalists as reserves.

Sorry about the wait, I've been quite busy this week.

Hopefully we can still do it this weekend, the only times I have free are this evening and tomorrow evening. That would actually suit the two ladies in the US, too :)

Yes, it didn't happen this weekend, mainly because I haven't been very available. It should be happening this week. I'll try to make it so a lot of people can come, but well see with availabilities :)

If you could do it Wednesday at 5 a.m. UK time I think that would work out great for everyone :twisted:
