I wonder whether it's an idea to have an "awards system", that shows some kind of image/rosette/trophy or similar in a persons' profile - to recognise winners of competitions (that have been approved/vetted by mods/admin).

I see members with their Arcade trophies and mentions of how many high scores they hold, so I'm guessing it must be possible. Not sure how it might work though. What do you think?

You know, I had an idea a couple of years ago to have a 'forum oscars' or something :P

Members would be able to vote in different categories like 'funniest member' 'most helpful member' that kind of thing, and then they'd get a new custom rank for the year.

I ditched it cause it was a bad time, and also because it may cause a little bad feeling if people felt others were voting only because their mate was a nominee instead of actually believing that he/she was the most helpful or suchlike.

it may cause a little bad feeling if people felt others were voting only because their mate was a nominee instead of actually believing that he/she was the most helpful or suchlike. Yes I understand that reservation. The same could be said for the current reputation system - people could thank their mates etc, all those sorts of things I guess are open to abuse of some kind....having said that, I haven't seen much evidence of abusing that system on this forum....

This suggestion is similar to the arcade winnings, like I mentioned. Idk, really, but you could have, for example, different colour trophys/medals or different number of trophys/medals that signified the 'weight' of a competition win, (which would be determined by the admin/mod team), and it showed up in the person's post profile.

I was thinking, there are all kinds of competitions - and it seems that people on here do like a good competition! - and all sorts of occasions that provide opportunities for them, and the threads fade away after a while, so it would be nice to remember later on.

I think you're onto a good idea here Saff. Could this extend to other competitions such as drawing competitions, your Treasure Hunt and other user competitions?

Normally an award at isketchforum means a custom title other than royal or mega or junkie or whatnot. But that's up to admins to set up. I was the last to get a custom title, and that was over a year ago.

I was wondering whether the admins would consider adding something else, like this (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=187600).

I like the idea of an awards system. I think it will encourage participation in forum comps and be nice to recognize people who've won in official forum competitions.

If a custom title is given out as an award, then anyone who wins more than one competition won't be recognised for their multiple achievements (and it might not even be clear which competition they won to get the custom title prize), so I like the idea of having a unique icon for each competition, and adding that icon to the profile page or the summary statistics on the right side of each post.

In the meantime, I put up some recent winners in the original post - wanted to put it in Announcements :P but I didn't have access.... Maybe a seperate post could be done and Stickied somewhere......
Also let me know if other comps should be put up.

That was before my time on the forum I think, so I'm not sure of the details.
But please let me know any that need to be added - or let a mod know so they can edit the post.

MrsNerdinator
25-11-2008, 08:12 AM
Ya, that was before your time on the forum.. but not only that, the forum has been wiped clean since then. Personally, I think it's only best to put up the winners to the competitions that are evident on the forum still (no offense TF :P)

Saffron
04-12-2008, 08:01 AM
Yes, I thought about that too, when I was putting them up - most of them would be OK, so I can do those, but some have multiple threads....
Edit: Did the ones where there was a one-off thread.

db1986
04-12-2008, 11:05 AM
Thanks for adding my comp to this list Saff. Although I haven't thought of any honourable mentions, I'm sure I can think of some :) Hopefully an orangey person will catch on soon :)

Should I put up a seperate section for those with Custom Ranks that explains how they got them?

Saffron
29-12-2008, 12:30 AM
Yer that's what I meant. I knew what I was talking about :P
There's 2 sections - one for competition winners, and one for isketch tournament winners. I was thinking a 3rd section in that post for Custom Ranks.

Saffron
01-01-2009, 11:37 PM
Oh I get you now.
That was up from before, I haven't gathered all the custom ranks yet - will put up a section once I get it all together. I thought it might be nice to have all the cutomranked people up there, regardless of when they got it - people like TempusFugit, 2.0, Tigeress as well as anyone else - but I haven't got round to asking them yet. Will do it v soon.

Hmm... just for that I might have to strip you... of your custom rank.

If you get a chance, take a quick look at my profile thingy above, and spectre's... see anything new? I liked your images, so have played with them. Now I'll test the water a bit and get your thoughts... is this something forumites would like implemented (somehow!)?

Not sure what impact it has on page load either, and I'm limited to how much code the title field will accept, so couldn't go quite as crazy as I would have liked - and we just had a CPU quota blip again, which might be attributable. Hmm...

MrsNerdinator
03-01-2009, 05:48 PM

Funny though.. I'm sure you've got the reasons for the awards all wrong..

Personally, I think this will work (might go a bit weird when someone has so many awards that they don't fit there any longer, but I can't see that happening for a looooooooooong time. Unless, of course, Alessadri just wants to take over :P)

Nice one, Ches! :D

If awards start getting too long, we'll probably start creating more fancy award images that incorporate several awards... but yeah - it shouldn't be anything to worry about for a while. The main problem is that I don't have ftp access to isketchforum and have to host the images on photobucket... makes the code stupidly long and uses up space too fast.

Aw sorry - I changed it  But have used that one for the Masters.

The only way around that is to put them all into one image and post that image above or below. Sorry

I guess it would work as long as you could have text as well as an image. It would come up as a poll rather than a post but that doesn't really matter.

You're not being dumb.
It's just that we used it last time to create the polls, so you have linked the two things together unnecessarily.
Any post can be put up with more than 10 image links, and then a mod can edit the links by removing the URL tags, and the images display, regardless of there being more than 10. It seems to not recognise the number of images if they are edited that way.

Edit: I've done it now anyway, we'll see if it can be modified.

Ahh OK, I wasn't exactly sure how it could be done, and yes I did get confused. (it happens quite easily sometimes) :embarrassed:
That why I double posted my images for the Christmas comp.

Back on topic: Does Jen get an custom rank for winning the Hallowe'en comp?

Saffron

It wasn't done as a comp that could earn a custom rank at the time.
And that is what these awards that Ches is working on in the titles are for - to officially recognise winners of individual competitions.

The Treasure Hunt and your Christmas Competition involved multiple parts, so a Custom Rank was offered (in the Treasure Hunt I vetted it with Ches and TF beforehand, and in the Christmas Comp, it was offered by Ches part way through.) Also, storm's was offered as she has won more than one competition....

It's up to Ches though who he offers a Custom Rank to, and for what reason. My personal opinion is that they should be difficult to get, else it loses some meaning.

For the Who's Who jen talked to the mods about a prize and I think that's where it originally came from (for me), but multiple competition can also be a reason.

I also agree with Saff that custom ranks should be should be hard to get, because they're the super bumper ultimate prize ^_^

Mods/admins discretion though, I think, which competitions are awarded ranks. Images in titles can be decided by the person hosting the tournament?

Edit: ... and I'm limited to how much code the title field will accept, so couldn't go quite as crazy as I would have liked ...

You could combine all award images into 1 image and then hosted on pb so there's less text?

That could work - Although I quite like having alt tags for each pic, so that you can tell what each one is for. And if lots of people were getting different things, it could be an eensy bit time-consuming too.

Yeaaah, this is a great thread, well done Saff :) It's a wonderful idea to implement that modification that was mentioned. I'm hoping to make a few changes to the forum in coming weeks (opinions allowing of course) but gotta make sure the mod plays fair with vB 3.8 first. If it does we'll be seeing it soon :D

I have updated the original post to include the latest two competitions on the Turkish Forum. However, I have reached the image limit again.......Peterrrr......... :(

Calling for suggestions:

The first post in this thread (the Unofficial iSketchForum Hall of Fame) lists the custom ranks, the forum competition winners, and the iSketch tournament winners. The trouble is I can't add any more images as there is a limit of 15 images per post.

Before the lastest update, the previous version had a glitch whereby you could put in image links as opposed to images, and a Mod could then edit them, and this would by-pass the image limit. This glitch appears to have been fixed in the new release. (boo)

It's not really feasible to have no limit on images - for most posts even 15 is more than enough.

And to have just one image (that includes the little images alongside the competition name) would mean that the individual competitions would not be able to have hotlinks to the relevant threads.

Can anyone suggest how we might get around this?

I'd suggest having a single, chart-like image. It can show which images are for which comps, in a table sort of way. The links for the competitions and the name(s) of the winning forumite(s) can just go below the chart, in order of date.

It's not really imperative after all to repeat the image for every link, and I think it will look neater actually if the images were in a single chart, and the links were just text.

You could keep updating the image chart (replacing with a new one) whenever there's a new competition to add.

Would that work? =)

That's a good idea, Storm.

My first thought was that you could create another thread, and post 20times (basically take up all the posts on page 1 of the new thread, just saying 'for future award winners' in those posts. The thread could then be locked.

That new thread could be named 'awards' and this thread could be re-named 'talk about awards' or something.

The first post from here could then be edited into the first post of your new thread, and then you'd have 19 more posts to play around with when you need them, and the possibility of more if you use them up because it could be unlocked and more added.

The problems with my suggestion is that the new awards thread wouldn't show up in 'new posts' because it's simply being edited and not posted on anew, BUT if it were stickied then it would be easy to find and view.

I'm fairly certain that a locked thread can be edited - if not then this idea is totally useless :P

That sounds like good idea Vik, but regular users cannot edit their posts on locked topics. They would have to wait for a greenie or orangey to either unlock it for them or post themselves. The only thing regular users can do is thank a post in a locked topic.

Is there a way to make Saff a "temporary" green so she can only edit the locked Awards topic?

Vik

Oh, sorry, I think the last time I tried editing a locked topic, I was a greenie - must be that regular forumites can't do that.

I think it would be possible for Saffron to be made a greenie of a certain section of the forum - so if there were to be an awards subsection then she could have control of it.

Saying this, it would mean that this awards thread would become a fairly large part of the forum (which isn't a bad thing as I think it's great) but I think Saffron would have to think about whether she'd like to take it on.

OR just make Saffron an all-round greenie. She'd be great!

That's OK, Vik. I had to try it as well, because I was a little unsure myself :embarrassed:

I would imagine that subsection moderation is possible, I've seen it on other fora. I don't think she would mind as she suggested it in the first place.

OR just make Saffron an all-round greenie. She'd be great!

Like what we did in the girls group? ;)

Vik's idea:

I think it can be a good idea to have a seperate thread for the actual listing of the awards.

Having said that, I think having the list of awards on the same thread as Award chat works fine, too. What I like about having the list and the chat in the same thread is that it keeps things tied together. I think people can tell when the Awards thread is due for an update because it will be updated after a competition is finished, so editing to update the thread (whether through Vik's suggestion or mine) should be all right.

Both of those suggestions sound like they would work.

With storm's idea - I had a little fiddle in Excel, with the intention of then screendumping it for the table image. I like the idea of the table, too, as it seems very clean. I'll have a little more play with that.

With Vik's idea - it might even be possible for a mod to insert 19 new posts after the intital post in this thread? I'm not sure about the need to lock the thread, unless it is just to keep it as 'display' only and not have the chat/responses attached. Maybe not even that many. I could probably have "Custom Ranks" in one post, "Tournaments" in a second, and then "Competitions" split over the next few - eg by year (unless we are planning more than 15 comps in a year ) or between random comps and special occasion comps, or between drawing comps and 'other' comps. Hmm.

Peter is looking at the awards hack in the link that I gave earlier. He needs to check its compatibility with some things etc - because I am not an actual member of the vBulletin forum, I couldn't see exactly how it worked (only the thread discussion about it) - but if it's similar to the Arcade, then it might make this whole converation moot. He did offer to give me additional access to that if it was implemented, in order to keep it maintained etc. I am more than happy to do that.

I'm not so sure about the all-round greenie thing though. Although, I hear TempusFugit throws some pretty mean parties in the Mod lounge....

The User Competitions subsection of Forum Games is quite large at the moment, and with the possible addition of a subsection or quite a large thread to display all these competition winners, can I suggest a new layout?

If the User Competitions had its own section instead of being a child of Forum Games, then all the competitions and awards can be listed in two separate child sections.
In the Awards child section, there could be different threads listing the separate years with Vik's idea of multiple posts to separate each competition within each year thread.

For example:

If you were looking at the Dux of the Forum competition, the complete thread path would be:

iSketch Forum > User Competitions > Competitions > Dux of the Forum

If you wanted to look at the awards for the Dux competition, the complete thread path would be:

iSketch Forum > User Competitions > Awards > 2009

If you were looking at the awards of the Blitz! Tournament, the complete thread path would be:

iSketch Forum > User Competitions > Awards > 2008

I like that idea deebs, because it would be quite neat (literally and figuratively) to categorise the competitions in User Competitions.

I'd suggest this:
iSketch Forum > Off Topic > User Competitions > Valentine's Day

instead of this (which is what we have now):
iSketch Forum > Off Topic > Forum Games > User Competitions

I think it might draw more attention to User Competitions if it were a direct subsection of Off-Topic, because Forum Games is quite active and I think it sometimes overshadows the User Competitions sub-sub-section.

I think it might be nice to have thematic sub-sections within User Competitions, like:
Valentine's Day
Easter
Christmas
iSketch competitions
General Competitions

I wouldn't necessarily say we should order it by year because we can sort the competition by date with the 'sort by date' tool on each section, but since some competitions start out with different names but refer to the same theme (e.g. db1986's Christmas Competition), sorting the threads alphabetically through 'thread name' isn't the best method, I find, for finding all christmas comps, for example.

Edit: I know there's a tool in 'search this forum' where you can put 'christmas', for example, as the key word and just have threads with the word 'christmas' in the title show up, but I'm still in favour of thematic sub-sections.

Another idea - as the thread contains custom rank information as well as competition and tournament winners - is to actually relocate it into the Forum section of the boards as an actual "Hall of Fame" or distinction.

So in that section there would be:

News and Announcements
Feedback
Introductions
Hall of Fame (or whatever you would call it)

Then the threads could be laid out as suggested with the themes - the initial post in the thread could list the winners of the comps with links to them (exactly as this thread is laid out) - with the ability to chat as well.

Would just have to make sure that the first 3 or 4 posts in the "general comps" were held for future updates.

So you would have:
Forum --> Hall of Fame --> Custom Ranks
Forum --> Hall of Fame --> Competition Results
Forum --> Hall of Fame --> Competition Results --> Easter
Forum --> Hall of Fame --> Competition Results --> Christmas
Forum --> Hall of Fame --> iSketch Tournament Results
etc
