In future competitions it will be disallowed but I don't want to enforce a rule retroactively so the lounge drawing will have to stay for this round.

thanks elfy. I did that, and got the message my image was too big. So I resized and posted. Then realised it was blimmin' small compared to everyone else's, so I resized again and reposted today, then deleted the one I posted Saturday. Hmmm...now I don't know whether I've screwed up for the competition...darn!

I had a busy day yesterday so didn't manage to get the poll up, so long as you have it up before I've done the poll it should be okay.
Congratulation for winning last weeks competition elfy.

Yeah im starting to think Peter's suggestion is a non-starter :sad:
Have you got any suggestions?

05-05-2011, 02:37 PM
Hi guys, sorry about the lack of compo management, things have been absolutely hectic with coursework and exams since I got back from Ireland. I'll set up a new BMC tonight for release on Saturday. Suggestions are welcome, my idea for this theme was 'newbie/stickmen style' because I thought it'd level the playing field a bit for those of us who aren't brilliant artists... e.g. votes would be swayed by comic/cultural value.
db1986

I like the stickperson idea, it means I can draw something easier ;)
I'll try to find time during my holiday to add a sketch, can't guarantee though :biggrin:
Suggestions are welcome...
Perhaps a few ideas for upcoming themes:
Transportation - Incorporate a method of transport into your drawing.
Country Life - Similar idea but opposite to the city life theme.
Holiday/Vacation - Sketch a scene from your favourite/dream getaway.
Circle - Draw using the circle tool only.
Square - Draw using the rectangular tool only.
Country Theme - This could be a particular scene or popular/special event from a particular country, it could also be our homelands.
Monochrome - Draw using black and white only.
Just a few ideas for future comps :idea:

Okay, got a new theme up, hopefully it'll go okay! Thanks for the ideas db, I don't wanna hint what's coming up so I may or may not pick one for the next BMC. More ideas and comments are welcome :)
oooh i like that idea, then poor peter doesn't get the blame all the time if no-one enters:P
Peter

Damn, another week with no enteries. Either no one can be bothered to enter or my ideas suck! Probably the latter, lol. What would people like to see for the next theme?
If we get some more ideas I'll run a multi-option poll and use it to pick the next 2 themes. Then, if everyone is happy with the idea, we'll let the winner pick next idea in-line.
Here are some more ideas:
Music
Cats
The internet
Knock-off famous works

I don't get it, is the Patriotism one over now? D:
Well the format is 1 week for entries, 1 week for votes... so I assumed if no one had entered in the first week that no one liked the theme.
Seeing has people have entered for patriotism now I'll run a vote for it on Saturday.

Ah I edited that date yesterday because I realised it still read April 1st! I'd just changed the links theme name/tag and not the date/link. Fortunately my exams are over now but my social calendar is filling up (have blown the metaphorical dust off it now I'm not burdened by work). Anyway, friends came over for dinner last night as I was preparing the thread, sorry! Almost done now!

Hey Guys... I just thought, maybe just maybe maybe, for an idea for the competitions, to have a topic called mmmm "Replicate" or, look im not English so its probably not the best word to use, but let me explain the idea:
2 photo choices gets uploaded from which participants may choose to replicate for the competition. The photos should each be unique, one can be colorful and the other monochrome or whatever...Leaving the entries more specific instead of open such as Favourite posession (which can be million things).
The choices can be replicated in color or monochrome or however the participants wishes to represent their choice.
This would mean that the enteries would either be THIS(pic1) or THAT(pic2), and therefor choosing a winner would rely on the art itself, instead of the Name of the artist who submitted for the competition. (which was also suggested and well accepted before)
Im not sure how everyone would feel about this, but im sure its worth a shot. I think having 2 choices only would make it more interesting than lets say 3, because having a yes/no choice is better than having a yes/no/maybe.. if that even made sense ; )
RubyRed
12-07-2011, 08:05 AM
I think this is a good idea, but some people have different talents when it comes to art.
Like myself for instance, I am rather good at replicating something but when it comes to creating my own piece of artwork, I'm absolutely terrible.
I guess this is just one of those things where there will always be some sort of issue as such because talents do just vary so greatly between each individual.
It's a tough one.
Or perhaps another idea (as tedious as it may be, and the fact it would technically be breaking one of the forum rules) could be to assign an account, or several, specifically for the purpose of bmc. If one account was designated which had limited powers (basically only the power to upload the image), and each user who wanted to participate was given the login details where they could then upload their image. Then the poll would be on the individual pieces, not necessarily the user, and perhaps more anonymity could be achieved? Or if several accounts were designated, then perhaps they could be rotated amongst users so as to prevent people becoming accustomed to someone being a certain unknown user. Sorta thing? I know that would be a pain in the ass but I thought it was just another suggestion.
Pikachu

It should be pretty easy from a development point of view to keep things simple. Theres no need for specific account creation, its a backend thing. The coding should look something like this. NOTE: I have not been in the Vbulletin backend yet, this is just a logical temporary option to the solution.
Query should be already on the page (just need the keywords from the string)
On the poll screen (would remove the "(by Username)") from the poll screens and anywhere else for that matter, which means the image would be displayed, and it wont show the username next to it. People can still visit any user's area tho if they wanna snoop around to see who's image it really is.
The other alternative would be to create a temp database table to store these competition entries in, and automatically move them into the original database tables after the poll finished. Running a cron job after the poll finished would be difficult. Unless you code to the area where the poll does the end date check (complicated in my opinion).
<?php
// Retreive characters 1 2 3 4 from the keywords field, to use in a check for 'bmc_'
// $keyword_check is a manually created variable, and $image_info['img_key_words'] should be whatever the variable
// is for the query array containing the image's keyword field (i dont know how the coding REALLY looks)
$keyword_check = substr($image_info['img_key_words'],0,3);
// Set up a date checker to varify the poll's end date, is highter than the current date
// This is just to see if the poll is still running, our next variable to be created (a check to see if the username should be
// displayed, should be set to false.
// $date is manually created, and $poll_info['poll_end_date']; should be the variable retreived from the query array containing
// the poll's end date (which idk how the query looks like, so variables are just dummy code)
$date = date ('Y-m-d');
$poll_info['poll_end_date'];
// Check if the poll is still running! Ie, the poll's end date hasnt been reached yet.
// If the poll is active, create $poll_is_active variable and set it to 1
if ($date <= $poll_info['poll_end_date'])
{
// echo 'Yes poll is still active!!';
$poll_is_active = '1'; //The poll IS still running!
}
// Here we check if the poll is running, and the image contains a bmc_ in the keyword string, we set the username to invisible!
// Set $display_user_name (a new variable) equal to 0 (for false)
if ( $keywords_check == 'bmc_' && $poll_is_active == '1' )
{
// echo 'Yes this is a competition entry with bmc_ in keywords, and the poll is still running!!';
$display_user_name = '0';
}
?>
Obviously the two if's at the top could be nested, this is just to show step by step what the process should* look like. Also note that there should already be built in functions to check for poll active etc.. or even if the keywords contains bmc_ (which SHOULD exist already because once there are enteries they automatically gets displayed in the competition section).
Once you have the variable $display_user_name, you can use that in all other areas where it displays an image, just wrap this around
the code that displays the $username
<?php
if ($display_user_name != '0')
{
// the original code goes between HERE
echo '(Uploaded by: ' . $vbulletin_info['username'] . ')'; // or whatever the code is??
// and HERE
}
?>
Like i said before, I have no clue how the backend of Vbulletin works, so this is merely a logical idea to temporarily fix* the issue.

This would mean that the enteries would either be THIS(pic1) or THAT(pic2), and therefor choosing a winner would rely on the art itself, instead of the Name of the artist who submitted for the competition. (which was also suggested and well accepted before)
Personally I find it more fun to see what people come up with themselves (which I would say is part of the art); rather than see who can make the best technical copy of something.
I'm sure others would be in to it though, and there's aboslutely no reason you couldn't start this competition yourself. Just post it in user-competitions (if you build it, they will come).

Like i said before, I have no clue how the backend of Vbulletin works, so this is merely a logical idea to temporarily fix* the issue.
The architecture of the gallery strongly linked to account information so anonymising gallery uploads would require quite a lot of coding.
Besides, it still wouldn't stop Joe Bloggs from telling his/her friends "my entry is number 3 ;D"
New theme up.
Just an fyi Peter... in the other thread you say "voting is private" but I can see who voted in the poll and for which option, don't know if you want to fix that or if its fine that way.

Hi everyone, just a quick word to say sorry I didn't get a new competition up last week (and maybe the week before). I got offered a job and had about 7 days to get all my stuff, buy shirts, buy a bike and move to Plymouth. So things have been pretty hectic. I'll have a new theme up soon!
Ouch!

Hi Peter in the mirror! I guess you accepted the job offer? ;p
Good luck with it buddy! I hope it goes well.
I was kinda waiting for the new theme, and also looking at the new pics posted.

Does it have to be Christmas logo? Christmas is gone already...let it be a free style logo championship...The brands invented by yourselves...Brand New! Think of a product then find a name for it and draw the logo...if I'm in I want to use my own program...studio bores me with it's limited tools and not having undo button! ....or else good like if you like my idea...
luck* (sigh)
and let it span 3 weeks, a week is not enough to create a concept..considering we're all madly busy...let me know! cheers...

Wow...that sounds like a whole different drawing competition altogether, HD. Some people don't have other programs, and this comp, I think, kind of makes it fair all round by having everyone use the same program.
A seperate drawing competition for more extensive and involved programs and broader drawing times sounds a good idea...that way those who don't have the where-with-all for the one you suggest, can still take part in this one...if it ever gets going again.

Wooooah slow down guys! As far as i remember, that undo button does undo your mistakes in the studio while busy sketching, but it does NOT remove ("undo") the mistake step in the RECORDING of it. (Isketch records so when you save it its a movie of your steps...bllahblah)
If that doesn't make sense, create a new dummy sketch, make an error, press the undo button, continue over your mistake, save your sketch and replay the sketch.
You will see the mistake in the replay, it is not removed in the replay of the movie. Even though while sketching the undo removed it.
I haven't been using the studio in ages, but thats how i remember it to be, so test it first : ) maybe it has been fixed by now i don't know.

I'm all for a logo competition, but it's really Peter's decision whether to put up a new logo or theme.
I quite like an idea similar the Google drawing competition, where people draw different images for the Google logo and the best get chosen and displayed on the webpage. Maybe we could have something like that here, but instead of displaying only the winner's logo, perhaps everyone's images can be shown alternately in a sequence, maybe say every day or every home page refresh.
Again, it's Peter's decision, but I'd be happy to run the competition, if Peter hasn't got the time to, and of course he agrees to it :)
