View Full Version : I can feel a tournament coming on!

Blitz! Tournament  - it's ON!!

Thurs 31 July 1:00pm (Aus UTC+10) = Thur 4am (UK UTC +1) , Wed 11pm (Canada/US UTC-4) and Wed 8pm (US UTC-7)

If you know anyone else who is interested - please let them know - as it is a one-off preliminary, people can elect to be involved right up until the start.
If you are competing - please make sure you are familiar with the rules and structure as outlined below.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is an individual tournament.

Room Parameters are as for Blitz – that is, the round stops once the word has been found. However, ‘time’ will be extended to 100 to allow more time to draw.

How it will work:
The tourny will consist of a preliminary round in which there is no limit to the number of players. The top 5 scorers from the preliminary round will contest the Final.

Preliminary Round:
4 games will be played in this round. Each player will play all 4 games and all players will play at the same time. The games will be played one after the other with a short break to calculate scores, and to allow players to ‘practice’ the next word list.

Wordlist:
The word list will be different for each of the four games:
Game 1: UK Easy
Game 2: UK Basic
Game 3: US Easy
Game 4: US Basic

Each player will draw once in each game. The total number of rounds in the game will equal the total number of players in the tournament.

Final:
The top 5 players will contest the Final.

The Final will consist of 4 games, one of each of the 4 word lists, played one after the other (with short breaks to tally scores etc).

Each player will draw twice in each game of the Final.

Scoring:

The actual scores from each game will be added together to form the final score for each player.

Where there is a tie

Where there is tie to get into the final - the person with the higher placing across the preliminary round will go through.

Eg: Players A and B tie for 5th place:

Player A UK Easy (1st) UK Basic (2nd) US Easy (2nd) US Basic (1st) - total rank = 6
Player B UK Easy (2nd) UK Basic (1st) US Easy (2nd) US Basic (2nd) - total rank = 7

Player A would go through as they have a better ranking overall.

If this does not break the tie, the person with the higher ranking in Game 1 (UK Easy) will go through. (continue to Game 2 etc until tie is broken).

Other rules:

No SKIPPING – you must attempt to draw your word. If you breach this rule, your final score for that game will be reduced by 10 points, and the total number of rounds in that game will be reduced by 1 so that no-one gets a second draw advantage.
No pressing DONE. (Edit: Heh - once the word is found, there is no DONE option in Blitz! anyway.... :embarrassed:)
You may HINT.

So what do I do now?

Send me a PM to say you are interested in playing – either on this forum or on iSketch. Tell anyone you think might be interested and does not necessarily visit the forum to do the same. Once I have enough players, I can attempt to sort out the most convenient time for everyone involved.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original Post:

Tourny anyone?

I have some ideas, and am happy to run one, if enough people are interested

Edit/Update - I have been tossing around a few ideas for tournies since Dean ran the last one and have some that I think would be interesting…..I’ll give 3 options (just briefly described here to give you a general idea - I will post more detail on the chosen one once decided) and see which one generates the most interest.

1. Blitz! Tournament (individual) – 4 games, each with a different word list (UK Easy, US Easy, UK Basic and US Basic), but round ends after the word has been found, like in Blitz! Top 5 scorers play off in a final.

2. Surprise Tournament (individual) – 5 games, each with a different word list. Word List 1 is UK Easy, but the other 4 word lists will not be revealed until after each subsequent game.

3. Specialty Tournament (team) – Teams of 3 people with 2 team members representing their team in each game. 4 games with word lists taken from specialty rooms (eg phrases, movies – these would be decided prior to tourny and each team would nominate preferences). Can be played in heats and/or finals depending on amount of interest.

Let me know which one tickles your collective fancies

What kind of tourney will it be??

ILoveMaths07
19-07-2008, 04:28 PM
Yeah, what sort of a tournament is it gonna be?

I was thinking of an admin vs best players tournament. We can play it in 'The Weakest Link' format. We must have an invisible admin who'll boot the weakest link after every game, one by one. Then the last man standing, admin or normal player, wins! Howzzat?

Can't wait... Hurry up Saffron!

All za best! :p

Yeah, but there must be this 'Weakest Link' thing to make it more exciting :P

MrsNerdinator
19-07-2008, 05:58 PM
Lol.. personally.. I think the weakest link thing would make it quite boring - if you're saying that the weakest player at the end of each round gets booted out. Because the other players wouldn't get to see the action in the room (that sounds terribly awful!).

That'll be boring when you get down to the last few left in the room :P

But.. if you changed your idea only slightly.. by having 10 rounds for example, and turning the 'weakest link' on 'away' mode at the end of each round.. then that could work. At least then everyone still gets to see what's going on :)

ILoveMaths07
19-07-2008, 06:20 PM
Hmm... Not a bad idea... Yeah, I think that's nicer... Booting would be fun too, but I totally agree with you. I'll be going 4 holiday on Aug 2, so it would be great if Saffron gets this done well b4 tht... HURRY UP SAFF!!!

Dean

weakest link? id like to see something like that, etc 10 players, bottom 2 drop out, and a new couple come in for the next round, more of a continuous thing though.

Blitz might be OK. Specialty might be really hard because I don't know many movies on iSketch's Movies wordlist... or Science or Famous Faces, etc. etc. I think I understand the idea of individual-style tournaments, but someone will have to explain to me how team tournaments work in iSketch.

Will everybody be in the same room at the same time for the tournament?

Dean
20-07-2008, 06:35 AM
times have usually been the hardest to organise. as the best universal time, still usually doesnt quite work out for enough people. I like the idea of teams, the amount of subs should be higher to cover both the varied timezones and players unable to turn up.

Yeah, everyone is in the same room. In team tournaments, all the members of a team play at the same time. You just /team teamname in the tournament room (which will be UC), and play normally. The team with the highest score moves onto the next round.

I think Saffron's Speciality tournament idea needs only two members of the three members in a team to be present for a game. This would help cover unexpected drop outs for whatever reason, in team tournaments, and allow people to arrange within their teams who's going to play which game.

Previously, when we had team tournaments, since we didn't have this idea of substitutes, either the team dropped out of the tournament because one member of the team of two could not play, or some random person took up the empty space. With Saffron's idea, teams can now plan covers.

sketches
20-07-2008, 03:56 PM
So, no matter what, each team in the end -- assuming someone drops out -- will end up with only two teammates per team?

It wouldn't be fair if some end up playing with all three teammates and others with only two.

storm
20-07-2008, 04:26 PM
No - from what I understand, the third teammate is a substitute. Only two from each team play. The third can watch. If Player no. 2 who is scheduled to play a game falls sick or can't get on isk or whatever, then the third team mate plays. You can choose who's going to be the sub in your team and the sub doesn't have to be the same person for all the games. Hope that makes it clear.

You just /join teamname in the tournament room (which will be UC), and play normally.

/team plz.

/join is for joining rooms.

I don't like Blitz! in tournaments because of the large differences you can get when comparing scores between different heats.

Yep, sketches, what storm said. The team would consist of 3 players, but only 2 play in any one game. This is to cover the reasons storm has given, but also for specialty wordlists, you can pick the two team members who are best for that particular wordlist.

Just on that, if it is the team tourny that goes ahead, I would ask each team to nominate 3 wordlists, and we would run with the most popular choices, trying to ensure that at least one of every teams choses wordlists was included

I don't like Blitz! in tournaments because of the large differences you can get when comparing scores between different heats.

Good point, but I think it can be worked around by using a points system for winning, rather than cumulative scores. For example if you gave 5 points for 1st, 4 for 2nd, 3 for 3rd, 2 for 4th and then 1 for everyone else who played then regardless of whether you win by 80 you still only get 5 points.

* NoHints;131661 did not say this.
It's ok, I won't be entering anyone who doesn't tell me directly they want to take part

Am I getting the feeling that the team one is more interesting? Personally I'm excited about Blitz! - I think the combined pressure of Blitz! in a tourny would be great - might have to see if I can work a Blitz! round into the team tourny somehow ......

storm
21-07-2008, 12:56 AM
I know I'm not in this tourny...buuut...

My vote would've gone for Blitz! too. It'd be incredibly tense and everyone would be a nervous wreck

Just on the scoring system for Blitz! though... in Blitz there tends to be a lot more ties with bigger discrepencies between the scores, because usually 1 or 2 people pwn and the rest trail behind... so, the scoring by position on score table idea would kind of work, but lots of people would be getting identical totals, and then what happens if lots of people have a tie? Am I making sense? lol.

OK, let me try again...

Basically, say you have 10 people, and 1 person is really good and gets all the words - they're going to get 100 points, 1 person is going to get 20, and the other 8 are going to get 10 each (hope I did the math right). So with the scoring system you're proposing, 1 person will get 5 points, 1 person will get 4, and everyone else will get 3. If you get another group of players to play Blitz! and they end up with 1 dominant player as well, then they're going to have the same score patten. Then it becomes really difficult to decide who should go into round 2, and if you let everyone (in this example) go into round 2, there will be too many people to manage and co-ordinate...

Hope that made sense... It's almost 2 a.m. _._

Edit 2: But I see it working as the style for 1 round, if the other rounds have a normal scoring style (everyone getting points for guessing the word)

Saffron
21-07-2008, 01:04 AM
Yes you make total sense - Any ties - the points would be added together and divided by the number of people who tie.

Eg
Player 1 – 50 – 5 points
Player 2 – 40 – 2.7 points - ie (4+3+2)/3
Player 3 – 40 – 2.7 points
Player 4 – 40 – 2.7 points
Player 5 – 20 – 1 point

I think that might work?

spectre

I like the Blitz! concept.

Saffron

Uh....sorry, no I don't understand that - no wait, I do on second read
In your example, the person who got 100 would get 5 points, the person who got 20 would get 4 and the other 8 would get (3+2+1+1+1+1+1+1)/8 = 1.4.

I wasn't considering heats for the Blitz Tourny - everyone who was interested would all play at the same time and each draw once - so if there are 20 people interested - it would be a round of 20 draws for the UK Easy wordlist, then a round of 20 draws for the UK Basic and so on for the four games. At the end of the 4 games, the 5 players with the highest cumulative points across those 4 games will contest a final.

In the final, there would be the four games, but as there are only 5 players, each player would draw twice.

That's what I was thinking anyway....basically at the moment I want to get a feel for what type of tourny - and I see no-one is even mentioning the Surprise Wordlist one

I like the Blitz! concept.
LOL spec - it would be great to see how some of the regular Blitzers go with a different word list ;)

storm
21-07-2008, 01:55 AM
Lol, glad that made sense, ahaa.

... In your example, the person who got 100 would get 5 points, the person who got 20 would get 4 and the other 8 would get (3+2+1+1+1+1+1+1)/8 = 1.4. ...

Isn't it the same whether they're given 3 points each or 1.4 points each? They'd still end up having the same scores...

Hang on, I've just understood how they go onto the next 'round', and well, if there are only 2 "rounds", so to speak (as in there's only 1 elimination), then I think, yeah, it might work - although I'm still seeing ties...

Saffron
21-07-2008, 02:04 AM
It wouldn't matter if it was just one game, but over a number of games, it might make a difference.

NoHints

If you're going to do it with no heats and always have games with everyone in them, then the normal scoring system would be fine. The Blitz! scores are only an issue if your comparing different groups of players, or having non Blitz! rounds included.

Also, if you're doing it that way I might join in - it's the commitment aspect of tournies that I don't want, and that method minimises that.

I do actually like the surprise wordlist idea. That would be good too.

Just like in athletics really, you run the heats and the winners of the heats compete in the final.

Some tournaments have heats (where different players play in each heat). This one has a preliminary round which is a little different - all players will play together in the preliminary round and the top 5 will then compete in a final.

Im interested in joining, not sure if I will end up playing in the end, depending on the scheduling :)

yep, perfect time for me to stumble into the tourny room and start being really disruptive and abusive.

4am?? hahaha

Aww yeh....pretty harsh time isn't it  - I kind of asked for interest first, and most of the people who responded were US, so the time ended up favouring that part of the world.

But...I think it would be good to run another one 3-4 weeks that has better times for Europeans

4am? Think that confirms that I'm not joining the tournie, and yes, I am awake rather late
But I'm very blind at the moment

Thank you to everyone who participated in this tournament!!

The winner was:

spectre

The top 5 players who made the final were:

spectre, total of 240 points
Lisa479, total of 160 points
cowspots, total of 140 points
nateman, total of 130 points
ILoveMaths07, total of 100 points.

Well done to everyone who played!!

Edit: Oh yeh - a quick explanation about changing rooms at the start:
I forgot to /op Dean when he entered :embarrassed:....and when I accidentally clicked myself out of the room, it meant there were no ops when I came back. So I had to make the new room else we wouldn't have been able to change the word lists etc....sorry for that confusion

When will the next tournament be? I want to know the exact date because I think the dates got mixed up for this one!

sketches, I think you are confused because the tournament DID happen on the 31st, BUT it was only the 31st in Australia. They're pretty much a day ahead of those of us who live in the U.S. and Canada, etc.

aw sketches - I wondered why you didn't show..........

Tourny's are held whenever somebody decides to organise one.....I'm interested in running another Blitz! one in about 3-4 weeks but the times are more likely to favour Europeans, given that this one was more US-biased (time-wise) - however that doesn't stop anyone else organising another one whenever they want!

Thanks, Saffron! May I suggest an early morning US time which would be sometime in the afternoon for the UK? I'm pretty sure they're about 5 or so timezones ahead of us, and I'm sure that everyone likes afternoon times!

I mean, come on -- UK tea party? :P

Now I just look stupid.

Of course you don't look silly Nerdy.....You were (of course) referring to the fact that Katie showed up at 4.am to the tourny, so she obviously got some fizz from somewhere..........

hehe ;)
