The iSketch server was rebooted 2 days a go and ever since people have lost their voting privileges.

I've been informed by an admin that it may take up to two weeks for the problem to be resolved.

I was also told by another admin that if I wanted them back earlier then I were to disable Ad blocker and allow cookies though I'd personally wait it out

Oh ok thanks for the info.

Hope they come back soon then :)

You're right about the ad-blocker, but I think cookies should be enabled for playing iSketch. If the votes don't return to normal after a while, sending an email to Feedback is always an option.

My yellow triangle disappeared too, and it *is* frustrating not to be able to use it.

On the upside, I haven't been told how sad I must be, and to get a life for a few days now

Regarding the advice to disable ad blockers, I have no ad-blockers to disable. And I still lack the ability to warn.

Ditto. I'm using a Mac and as far as I'm concerned, this thing doesn't need any ad blockers.

I have heard that Internet Explorer has enabled voting privileges for people, but I don't want to install I.E. just to test it out.

I just played a game of Tandem tonight and several people were able to warn artists. Is there a definite reason these people had that ability? NoHints, you say you have never lost your voting privileges in the first place?

Does it matter what browser you're using? Is it just a theory that disabling an ad-blocker or deleting cookies actually work?

I only use Safari when I play iSketch because for some reason it won't work on Firefox.

Nope, I never lost mine, but since you mentioned other browsers I just checked IE (version 6) which I never use and I have no voting ability on that; just on firefox (3.0.3).

I lost my yellow triangle this weekend just gone, but by Sunday it came back.
It seems to be affecting people in different ways.

Edit: Also over that weekend, one of the usual 10 rounds was automatically skipped. Someone would be drawing round 4, for instance, and they would be skipped and round 5 would start immediately after.
I did manage to screenshot one of those instances but don't have it with me at the moment. It appeared that the same word was being used in the skipped round. I wasn't sure if this was related in any way.

Anyone wanting information regarding voting privileges needs to write to feedback at info@isketch.net with any questions. Feedback will instruct you with the correct information.

i dont have voting privilages on either IE OR firefox :(

its stupid cos it remembers your stats, but then when you go to boot someone, it says

"You don't have voting privileges! (New players will have to play a number of games before they can vote.)"

grrrrr

Did they reboot the server to... add anything?
Because /stats now tells you when your first visit (to isk) was.

just curious

Jobe

It's seriously got to be a bug because there's no way the stats "Your first visit was today. You have spent 5524 hours on iSketch" add up. I can't have played 5524 hours just "today".

Well it's either a bug or the stats are being moved server side, and thus the "Today" means it's my first visit, according to server side stats.

EDIT:
 I changed names to my normal name and now my stats say:
Your first visit was 6 days ago. You have spent 5524 hours on iSketch

Frankly if the stats are gonna be name based, then we need a way to protect our names.

Honey-Baby
11-10-2008, 03:16 PM
I doubt it would be named based for everyone because it isn't for me;)

spectre
11-10-2008, 04:45 PM
maybe it's name based...but only on a certain IP?
like a spectre on my ip = a bagillion hours play
spectre on..someone else's ip = 0 hours?

i don't want to steal someone's name in order to test this. lol.

-----
k i tested it.
i tried with different names and my stats stayed the same....

Hmmm... I played yesterday and went back on today and when I look at my stats it seems to reset them everytime I go on, so in theory, there's no way of ever losing my status as a 'new' player if this continues. It says my first visit was 47 days ago, which is true because it's a new computer, but I've never played a game according to that.

I really hope it sorts itself out soon because there seems to be a serious amount of cheating going on and no one is able to warn!

Hi there Sarah,

I understand that there are a few glitches in the system, which the powers to be are attempting to resolve. I am sure things will be back to normal soon (well, as normal as it can be!).

My advice re: cheating... If you know of some admin, check to see if they are online - I am positive that they would come to your aid

Interesting.
Logged as normal and had 199 days since first played and had votes(ie)
Logged as .. on firefox and no votes and said it was first visit.

This has happened to me too- it still displays my stats record, but says my first visit was today. :p

Please get better, iSketch server! *huggles server*

it still displays my stats record, but says my first visit was today. If the 'first visit' indicator in /STATS never changes, the problem could be on your end. Writing to Feedback for troubleshooting would be a good idea in that case.

As advised, I sent an email to feedback the other day. I got the standard response regarding voting privileges so I hammered home the point that a lot of regulars are experiencing this problem.

This is their response:

If players follow this check list it will help eventually.

They do need to play awhile before the voting privileges are restored since there were changes made concerning
the way voting privileges are determined which takes into consideration a number of factors like how many games they have played, number of visits and compliance with game rules among other things

Hmmmm

So the 200+ games I've won, the 500+ games I've played, and the 5000+ hours I've played aren't enough for voting privileges? How many games and hours do you need to have played? How long do you need to have been playing for?

And regarding the use of "abiding by the rules" as a method for determining when you get voting privileges, the abusive players who have played enough to get them, can sit there and vote to boot you or warn you, making it appear on your record as if you DON'T abide by the rules thus ending up with you having to wait LONGER to deal with the trouble makers who do it.

As for what I think has been done to the system, I'm thinking your "days played" and voting privileges are now stored on the server, and the server uses a "unique" ID you get when you first play, or something along those lines. My reasoning being is IP's change, and browser user-agent strings are too common amongst players to use for identification purposes.

Sarah
17-10-2008, 09:16 AM
Hmm... I think it's all very flawed. As I've already pointed out, everytime I log on my stats are being reset to zero. So their advice of keep playing as it takes a lot of games etc to get your voting privs back is pretty much useless if they're being wiped out every time.

It's all a bit frustrating really as there are lots of people with voting privs on there who are blatantly cheating or abusing their powers (like Jobe pointed out) when the people who wouldn't do that are stuck in limbo, if you like. I'm considering emailing them as well, but I'm not sure what good it would do.

I'm currently on a university computer and have a total of just 16 games played and a few hours, but still have the ability to vote on both IE and FF (the only difference between the two browsers is the "first visit" in stats).

Also, this doesn't explain why on my laptop I have no votes in IE, but I do with FF.

See there's no consistancy as to whether or not someone can even vote.

Both IE and FF use the same Shockwave data location and data, so stats should be browser independant. But clearly aren't in this case. Which leads to the question, if you upgrade your web browser causeing the user-agent to change, will that reset your stats?

And then the other question is why as someone like NoHints with barely any stats have the ability to vote when someone like me with over 3 years of stats NOT have the ability to vote?

And then there's those who, since the vote "reset" have played 30-40+ games, several weeks worth of days, and a good 20 hours not have the ability to vote, when the newbies who never played iSketch before, come on, spend LESS time playing and then get the ability to vote first.

There is one thing we should all remember though, while we complain, and that is that iSketch is a privilege NOT a right, and that privilege can be taken away from you at any time for any reason, valid or not.

I managed to get my voting privs back about 2 weeks ago on my home pc, and it seems that gradually other regulars are getting theirs back too. It seems strange that newbies are getting the yellow triangles and some regulars aren't. I'm sure that feedback will come up with an answer.

Iirc I'm still a newbie from having wiped my laptop a few weeks ago. Perhaps I shall play a few more games to see how long it takes me to get voting privs...

Edit: Just checked the stats... My first visit was 10 days ago and after having spent seven hours on iSketch and played ten games, I don't have any privs yet.

It's a shame that some people are having problems. Usually when something like this happens the official line is it's an 'update'. Since it's a free game, as Jobe says it's a 'privilege' (allegedly, lol). I suppose players will all just have to sit tight and hope it's rectified. These things usually are... and sometimes they come with something new... you never know.

I got my votes back a few days ago, randomly :). They still seem to be missing in IE- but but back to normal in firefox. The only odd thing is that it says I started playing 6 days ago- and I've somehow accumalated over 1500 games in that time!

Right, Just played a couple of games of iSketch. The "you're no longer a newbie" message pops up after 14 games have been played and my privs came back. Logged off and logged back on to check (cos the yellow triangle doesn't appear on its own) and hey presto it was there.

I saw one or two others who still couldn't vote and no, they weren't newbies either. Oh, speaking of which... I didn't have a newbie dot.. dunno when that vanished but it wasn't after 14 games when the message popped up O_o

It did that to me on a uni pc. I had played for about 6 hours and it said that I had played about 80 games and spent 16 hours on iSketch. Weird. At least I got the yellow triangle by that time

I lost privelages along with most people a couple of weeks ago then recieved them back. Last week they disappeared again, wrote to feed back and was told I need to play more games. re-downloaded shockwave have played 40 or more games, still no privelages. Wrote to feed back with a bit more information, was told I need to play more games.
I give up !!

It seems a bit strange that even after 40 games your yellow triangle had still not appeared, even after you downloaded Shockwave again. I think that once you have played enough games you may need to log out of the server and log in again. I tried this once and it seemed to work. If that doesn't work I think the best thing to do is e-mail feedback, explain that you have tried several times to resolve your situation and give them as many details as possible.

NoHints

I'm guessing they've just made it more than 40 games needed to get votes?

If so, that's definitely not a bad thing in my opinion, it's just a shame it's affected people who should have voting ability.

Chris_uk
28-10-2008, 05:52 PM
AJ said it only took her 14 games though. To be honest, it looks like some kind of new algorithm has been attempted to decide who gets votes and it wasn't tested enough. Feedback should provide better help or an apology in light of the number of people who have been affected as it is quite blatently not caused by not enough games being played.

I never lost mine for some reason or another.

hm...i dont really understand. I mean, i did lose them once for some odd reason... and then i got them back, but after i voted like...3 times in the same room (cause of a bunch of n00bs writing -_-) they disappeared...twas weird. have them back now though
