Are there any other classical music lovers out there? Or is it just me?

I like it, and listen to it while driving sometimes.
I'm not the sort that can recognise many things and say who it's by or what it's called though.

OMG I LOVE THIS THREAD ALREADY!!! <3 <3 xD
I like classical music, along with a whole lot of other music.
I listen to it fairly often. I found that when I first got into it that I liked more the big, dramatic snippets that everyone can hum, but now I'm more into opera than anything else. I think once you have been to the opera and heard those big, perfect voices coming from those people, you really appreciate the skill and work that goes into it. It's also fun to blast out in the shower and annoy the neighbours :P
We have a really nice opera house in Stuttgart and some of the newish interpretations of the classic old operas are really interesting. We went to see a modern 'Carmen' a while back which was nice. It was set in the slums rather than in the typical 'town square' or 'gypsy camp' and it worked, although I did miss the dance aspect, and the beautiful costume design.
I'm not a fan of chamber music, or of baroque in general, which is a shame as my mother-in-law plays violin in a chamber music ensemble. I think my favourite composer is Puccini - I walked down the aisle to a piece from his 'Gianni Schicchi'.

A lot like Hinty and Vik, I like some and not others... I suppose it's much like any kind of music, if you like rock, it's not usually all types (back off thrash metal, lol)
I love this piece...

and this one...

Some pieces of music are just moving. I quite like Spring from Vivaldi's four seasons too... it's cheery.
This was my walking down the aisle song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFypui1xKlk&feature=related
It's about a women, pleading with her father to let her marry her sweetheart. The lyrics are a bit dramatic, really - but I love the melody so much it had to be that one.

I listen to all sorts of music. Classical music can bring out a whole range of emotions, which sometimes cannot be seen. I don't have any particular favourite artists, composers or songs, I will listen to any classical.
It can be quite uplifting in times of sadness and very calming in times of worry and stress.

I don't really know of very much classical music but I guess I like the "popular" pieces like Fur Elise, Moonlight Sonata, Turkish March etc..

Hmm yeah, same :), though I'm not that familiar with the genre, I'm partial to Beethoven and Mozard, and the lord of the rings soundtracks <3
I have a sister who sings Opera stuff a lot. She and her husband both just recently graduated with a bachelors in music. She for singing and he for piano. I think it is sweet how he proposed to her. He took her to see The Marriage of Figaro and during intermission he took her out and proposed. They both know a lot more than I do about classical music. I know I love the classics like Beethoven and Mozart and Tchaikovsky and the such but when it comes to names of songs and whatnot I usually cannot tell you what songs specifically I like. I just know I do like classical music and Opera and the likes. =)

Two obvious ones that spring to mind are Ode to Joy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wod-MudLNPA) and In the Hall of the Mountain King (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEXAruiTSjk). Both fairly well known for being on things (Alton Towers advert long ago:P)
I used to listen to them both when I was little because Ode to Joy was one of the songs that our keyboard played by itself, and Mountain King was a song that was on our first computer when we bought it.
/me feels he should use youtube tags at least once, just for the sake of it:
<object width="445" height="364"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vEXAruiTSjk&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0x2b405b&color2=0x6b8ab6&border=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vEXAruiTSjk&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0x2b405b&color2=0x6b8ab6&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="445" height="364"></embed></object>
There's also plenty of good classical-type music made recently, mainly things made for films like people have already mentioned. Lux Aeterna (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKLpJtvzlEI) by Clint Manstell in 2000 is a great song, which in my opinion is just as good as many of the old classics, although the LOTR version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EF1iZH1F40s) of it is possibly better for listening to.
One I really like just now is Spiegel im Spiegel by Arvo Part (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sh_zPsucV0U). It's fairly quiet and doesn't do much from start to finish (compared to others) but I really like it. I first heard it on Classic FM in my car and had to stay in my driveway until it was finished so I could find out what it was.
Ah, I don't listen to classical music that much but I do rather like it. I really like Erik Satie's "Gnossiennes No.1" and "Gymnopédies No.1". Umm... and Camille Saint-Saens, and most of the other usual suspects too... Beethoven and that. I don't listen to that much of it though.

10-02-2009, 10:21 PM
I don't really like Mozart or Beethoven. Mozart's works seem to bore me.
There's WAY too many to list, so I'll just list some of the standards I like.
Johann Sebastian Bach - Organ works, St. Matthew Mass, B minor mass, the Well-Tempered Clavier, and all fugal and contrapunctal music.
Fryderyk Chopin - ALL WORKS. I'm a pianist, and I've always loved his work.
Igor Stravinsky - Petrushka, Firebird Suite, etc.
Gustav Mahler - Symphonies, almost all! Especially Symphony No. 5.
Claude Debussy - Clair de Lune (obviously), Children's Corner, and symphonies.
Eric Satie - Gymnopaedies!
Peter Tchaikovsky - Symphonies No. 1 and 6. Nutcracker Suite, and anything of his that's chordal, really.
FACT: Eric Satie was considered the most lazy student at the Paris Conservatory, yet look at his beautiful music!

Chops is the best!!! i love his nocturnes, but have u tried his Polonaises? i love the heroique xD also, all his etudes. they're great cos they really help develop your technique but they are also really beautiful to listen to as well.
Debussy is awesome, i love the childrens corner and especially the first two from Estampes. also, the prelude and toccata from 'Pour le Piano' theres a sarabande in the middle too but i like the other two better :P
Stravinsky's petrushka is amazing...and amazingly impossible to play >.< have you seen the score? its freaky hard.
I'm not really a fan of Bach to be honest, but the french suite is quite nice. I find contrapuntal music a little boring though i suppose because its less textural, unlike music from the later periods which really make the most of the versitility of the developed piano. clavichords and harpsichords annoy me. i hate them actually.
My favourite piece of all time (at the moment) is still Liszt's La Campanella. Brilliant! also, the variations on a theme of pagannini are also awesome. xD this thread is the best, you're da bomb tylar!!!

Oh I think you're thinking of Duel of the Fates (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaiEHNv2g6w) by John Williams, which is great :D In fact, most of his compositions are!
I also like the pretty dramatic Toccata & Fugue in D minor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FXoyr_FyFw) by J.S. Bach.

how do u...like... post a youtube vid?
A few people have posted short explanations but:
When you reply to a thread there's a YouTube button at the top, where the other text options are.
If you click that you get "" in your post (you can just type it if you prefer).
When you're watching a youtube video, at the right hand side there is a line which says "embed", you paste what is in there between the two youtube tags above. (You can also paste the text, highlight it and click the youtube tags.)
There's also a "customise" option beside the embed code which lets you change some colours if you like.

Recently performed Firebird (which is simply crazy to perform xD) which I lovee
And as you mentioned, the well-tempered klavier was an obsession of mine about a year ago.

This thread excites me, it gives me the opportunity to recommend some great pieces of music.
Well, being an orchestral trumpet player (not professionally) I would have to say that 'classical' (baroque/classical/romantic etc.) music is one of the greatest things in the world. And if I didn't 'have to' say it, I would anyway.
The fellow/fellowess who listed Bach's B minor mass is a wise, wise person. Truly one of the greatest human creations of all time. Some guy once said something along the lines of "Who needs psychotherapy when we can listen to the mass in B Minor." That sums it up. I'll list some others I like:
Mahler's 2nd Symphony 'resurrection': Possibly my favourite symphony from one of the greatest romantic composers. It almost makes me believe there's a God; it's that powerful. Like most of Mahler's works it's rather disturbing when you understand his state of mind. It's a beast of a symphony (like 1.5 hours long) but so absorbing it goes like that *clicks fingers*. Plus the last 5/10 minutes makes you feel like the world has opened up to some magnificent light. I urge you to listen to it (or infact any Mahler), it really is a life changing experience. Especially live.
Bruckner's 7th: It's a toss up between this and Mahler 2 for the top spot. Another mind blowing symphony which everyone must hear. Also, If I'm not mistaken it was one of Hitler's favourites. I think Hitler would only allow people to listen to Bruckner, Beethoven and Wagner. Which bring me neatly on to:
Wagner's Operas: They're all pretty special. Ignoring the fact that Wagner was basically a pre-Nazi Nazi he raised the bar for opera, and to some degree story telling - a surprising number of modern day stories are based on his operas. Tannhäuser is one of my favourite. Listen to the overture - beefy.
Tchaikovsky's erm... 4th, no 6th: Basically, Tchaikovsky wrote 7 incredible symphonies and it's pretty hard to chose my favourite. 4 holds a very special place in my heart and nearly always makes me cry. Beautiful. Romeo and Juliet is also rather wonderful.
Chopin: Man, this guy was depressed, but it seems that it's almost a prerequisite for great music... His preludes are awesome.
I could go all night listing my favourite works but I think you get the idea.
Oh, you should also listen to Telemann Trumpet concert.
