Can anyone name any cover versions that were actually better than the original?
You Can't Hurry Love - Phil Collins.
Much better than the 3 Degrees version.
Any others?
I think you'll find that Diana Ross and The Supremes did the ultimate with "you can't hurry love". The Phil Collins imitation was pretty damn poor

Alot have covered this song including Elvis Presley, but for me this song now belongs to The Righteous Brothers

Sorry Dolly Parton, but whitney's version is far better.

Also sang by X factor winner Leona Lewis.

feel free to hike your kilt and sing a long
Take That with relight my fire, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWPUespcblU ( I have been known to do the Lulu part myself on the odd occasion, eg when drunk at a wedding/party ):embarrassed:
I'm not sure who sang the original but it sounded very drab.

Sorry to Tammy Wynette - but I reckon the Blues Brothers did it better.
STAND BY YOUR MAN (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8bKxdPaXVc)
Frankie Laine - sorry old mate - the Blues Brothers also did a great cover of:
THE THEME SONG FROM "RAWHIDE" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbN2O94AdG4)
Neil. Erm. Mr Diamond. UB40 sounds better.
RED RED WINE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orm48qxmpHw)
Sorry Elvis but they also did a fantastic version of:
(I CAN'T HELP) FALLING IN LOVE WITH YOU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MxmthbKZYU)
And well.....when they teamed up with Chrissy Hynde.... Sorry Sonny & Cher
I GOT YOU BABE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xMhWd7mf0M)
And of course how could I not apologise to Little Millie Small for Bad Manners' version of:
MY "GIRL" LOLLIPOP (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_N1qQZL550)

To put my two pence worth in. I don't think any covers are as good as the song itself.

you could have a point there, perhaps that's why this song hasn't been covered

OMG Jewels I had totally forgotten about that. He was an Australian born of Italian descent. The other guy in the Pink Shirt with the squeezebox is Ian "Molly" Meldrum - the host of "Countdown" which was Australia's version of Top Of The Pops.
Sorry Dolly Parton, but whitney's version is far better.

Sorry but Whitney should've been strung up for destroying such a beautiful love song. It was criminal what she did to "I will always love you" with her caterwalling and screeching
One cover version I love is Tom Jones version of kiss (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuSOHHY_I88) but to me it's equal to the very different original by Prince:smile:

I will admit not to liking the dolly parton version of I will always love you. I find it a bit too 'bity' on the ears like it doesn't gel together. That's a very rare exeption to my 'stick with originals' campaign

I love the cover version of The Beatles' Daytripper by Ocean Colour Scene. I've never been a Beatles fan but the OCS version is just so rocky and raw. I think it's only available as a live version where the Gallagher brothers from Oasis turned up to a gig and got invited onstage. I'd have loved to be in the audience for that.
I don't know if it counts as a cover version, but Sting's 'Roxanne' as sang in Moulin Rouge is sooo much better than the already alright original. Ooh, gives me chills.

Kelly Jones of the Stereophonics did an amazing cover of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U. I've got it on my hard drive if anyone wants to hear it. In my humble opinion it's how the song should be done.
Also Jimmy Eat World did a cover of "Firestarter" by Prodigy that I like. Very dark and twisted.

Muse covering please, please, please by The Smiths
Ben Folds doing In Between Days by The Cure
Joey Ramone's version of What A Wonderful World (Chris Moyles ripped it off on Celebrity X Factor)
Limp Bizkit's take on George Michael's Faith makes me laugh every time I hear it
Natalie Imbruglia's Torn was a cover version too
Red Kross - Yesterday Once More originally by the Carpenters
There's just a few....

Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart was covered brilliantly by The Dan Band ... it's a great version, but does introduce swearing. Hey, it still makes me snigger
Rick Wakeman and his son, Adam, did a cover of The Rolling Stones' Paint it Black. As to whether it's better I dunno, it's a completely different arrangement (instrumental for a start) but well worth a listen if you liked the original.
Dancing in the Moonlight, originally by King Harvest, was brilliantly covered by Toploader.

=O I prefer the King Harvest version. I remember going to youtube and trying to find Havest's version, and was soarly dissapointed to find the Toploader version.
I'm not entirely sure, but a cover is just another version of the same song, no? A lot of people sing songs and butcher them on youtube, but I feel this person sings some things better:

I always like originals better than covers but then I'm always surprised to learn some songs I like are actually cover songs of ones I've never heard. I never knew Elvis Presley's Hound Dog was a cover or The Clash's I Fought The Law but they're great. Other than that my favorite cover song is probably Guns 'n Roses- Knockin' On Heaven's Door. Mmmm........classic GNR:smile:.
