View Full Version : Do you exercise?

Do you exercise regularly? Do you have a routine you follow? Care to share? :)

Coz I don't exercise regularly... OK, OK, I don't exercise at all... and I think I really should start making an attempt to take care of my body more before I grow old and get hit by all these joint troubles and health problems because I was a lazy cake-eating sod when I was young... ah. x_X

The only "exercise" I do is walking up and down the stairs, handy seeing as I'm in the attic so there's a lot to climb :p Seriously, I do no exercise and over the last 2.5 years I've gained a stone thanks to studying from home - ugh. That said, my weight fluctuates a lot, over night/day it can change by a staggering 5lbs (rarely) but I can still fit into my size 10 jeans so I'm not crying yet xD

Storm, I think if you're at the ideal weight/size and your BMI is ok then it's ok to just take regular walks. If you're slim but generally unfit, that is, walking up a few flights of stairs makes you really out of breath (more than it usually would) then maybe do some cardio exercises in the gym.
I've got martial arts classes sorted but getting there and going is my only problem. The area is "unsafe" :/

It annoys me when people see you in the gym and say "oh you're so skinny why do you need to exercise?" because it's not just about weight! It's about what your lungs/heart can and can't handle. I was slim(mer) in college but I know for a fact my lungs were in trouble.

P.s don't learn to drive if you plan to exercise more! Carry on hitch hiking safely lol :)

Too true, before I had a car I would regularly walk to and from places that were a 1 - 1.5 hours walk away - I very rarely do that now (45 mins is probably the longest I regularly walk at a time now).

I don't do any "stand alone" exercise at the moment, but usually go through periods where I do (usually during holidays).

We hike, that's about it. I don't drive, so I walk everywhere I need to go during the week.

That's pretty crazy that your weight can fluctuate by 2.3 kgs in one day o.O I didn't know even know that weight could change in 1 day.

Well, I just calculated my BMI and it's 19.6, which, apparently, is fine, because the normal range is 18.5 - 24.9. Since I'm not going to grow any taller, the only thing that can increase is my weight, and apparently, I can safely put on 13 more kgs and still be within the normal limit... I need to eat more (healthily) anyway so hmm.

I don't really get that much out of breath when walking up some flights of stairs, but I do a bit.

I guess I do do some exercise... I usually walk to uni (thrice a week); it's a mile away and I take 25 minutes to get there (usually a brisk walk because I'll be running late lol). I just feel like I should do more.

I've got martial arts classes sorted but getting there and going is my only problem. The area is "unsafe" :/

Heh, ironic...

I can't go to the gym. I hate it. All those other people there sweating away and looking so fit... and I'll be like, crawling along on my treadmill.

I have made attempts to exercise along to youtube vids xD This is less embarrassing, lol.

Aww, I like hiking :) If I had a hiking buddy, I would, coz there're so many places to hike about in the Highlands :)

I didn't exercise at all before. :s
During the pregnancy I started doing pelvic floor exercises though. Which is VERY important. I would suggest everyone does them, no matter your age. It helps for problems such as incontinence when you're older. And for those of you wishing to have babies, it's definitely handy to start doing them now. You'll know why after.. if you haven't been doing them >.>

So yeah, I started doing those type of exercises during my pregnancy, and now I have to keep them up, and will be doing more body stretches and stuff from now on. I want to keep it up, 'cause you're more prone to little accidents from now on (after having a kid). Not only that, but the womb is still sensitive and if you take care of it now, you'll less likely to have problems where your womb "drops", etc, in the future.

Sorry for such a deep post :P But I guess after having to be induced, my body has realised how important exercising is because you're left with a few pains :) Not only that, but I'm now also suffering from back pains from two epidurals that I had. As well as a few other random pains down my back. So I need to keep exercising to get rid of that stiffness. And also still a fractured foot, that I made worse..

Hah.. ah well XD

I have no sense of weight as far as imperial units are concerned but you saying 5 pounds was 2.3 kg is a LOT. I really went  lol I'm glad I said rarely because it has only happened recently and about two times at the most. But that's still a scary thought :|

Just checked my BMI and it's gone up since the last time I checked but thankfully still within the normal range. Maybe exam stress this month and next might get it down a bit ha

I guess I do do some exercise... I usually walk to uni (thrice a week); it's a mile away and I take 25 minutes to get there (usually a brisk walk because I'll be running late lol). I just feel like I should do more.
Tbh, I'd say even that was sufficent enough. My college was 3 minutes away from me and walking to and from college 5 days a week, sometimes twice a day, was enough for me because I was still in very good shape and my weight was maintained.

I can't go to the gym. I hate it. All those other people there sweating away and looking so fit... and I'll be like, crawling along on my treadmill. It's not like that at all, I assure you. Try going to a women's only session and you'll see how women vary a lot. If there are loads of blokes about then the chances are yes, most of them are there three times a week and they will be very fit compared to you. But a man is a poor comparison for you... unless you've forgotten to tell us something :p

During my school years up until the first year of uni, I used to walk everywhere. That was my only real type of exercise apart from doing PE at school. Having said that, my college was an hour's walk away, and the journey to town to catch a train took me about 50 minutes to walk. So that meant I spent at least 2 hours walking every weekday. I do enjoy walking, (though it only happens now at weekends) but now I can drive, my time spent walking anywhere has greatly reduced. I was thinking about joining the gym at uni, but like storm said, I would stick out like a sore thumb against all the muscular people that go regularly.

My routine is simple:

Monday: coaching basketball, playing 3 on 3 for about 45min with students after practice
Tuesday: football, 7 a side futsal style, 2 hours
Wednesday: volleyball practice, 2 hours
Thursday: football, 7 a side futsal, 2 hours
Friday: softball practice/game, 3 hours.
Saturdays: twice a month paintball
Sunday: eat and drink.

Wow. You must be in great shape 2.0, I love the paintballing too :D Ahh I wish I had more money to go more often.

Hmm I bike everywhere. And I kinda do lots of random exercises at home. And I have a trampoline. So that helps with my overall fitness I would say :) But other than that I don't. I would say if you don't want to look too bad, either try to just walk everywhere or go for random walks... It's good exercise if you just do that for like... 30 minutes or something. Yeah. I dunno. Tbh there's mostly always someone fatter than you at gyms... But like... I don't like gyms just because you're paying money for stuff that mostly you could improve on your own. :) But yeah :)

But yeah. I find the best exercise is just walking to places and stuff. :)

I don't do gymns either. I dislike how clinical they usually are and have no desire to pay for something I can do just as well, for free in a nicer environment.

When I do exercise for the sake of exercise it's either at home or parks etc.

Aww, I like hiking :) If I had a hiking buddy, I would, coz there're so many places to hike about in the Highlands :)

I'm sure you could find someone (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/3420685.stm).

I go to the gym 4 or 5 times a week, and for cardio I cycle to the train station every weekday (25 mins of field road, and back later of course). And I also walk from the train station to uni, and back. Or run, if I have a later train. I have a tendency to run late, haha.

I wouldn't be able to do cardio in a gym. Running on a treadmill is the most boring thing ever.

I used to play futsal, too. But not any more.

storm
13-03-2009, 07:48 PM
Lol... you should flick the webcam on once and record yourself dancing like no one can see... I'm sure it would be quite amusing to watch later on coz you never really get to see yourself dancing xD

/me is going out tonight so I suppose I shall get some exercise xD (That's a good excuse to go out hmm)

I like skipping/jumprope games :) Think it's quite underrated as an exercise. We used to skip lots in (elementary) school. There was one game in particular that was really popular, and it was basically this rope made of rubber bands; two people stood 3 or 4 meters apart opposite each other and the rope was stretched around their ankles... and there was this certain pattern you had to jump to cross the rope and get back, if you finished it successfully, the rope got pulled up to knee-level, then thigh-level, then hip level, then waist level... it's hard to explain but it was really fun, and I'd do it again but no one my age likes jumprope anymore. =)

Lol So Would I! :) Heh heh. :) Hmm -looks for rope thingies- Lol. Ahh I do skipping with my cousin every now and then and we see who can go the longest. I used to be able to go on forever I swear.. Now it's up there at about 75? :P Then I just am like. Eh. xD But yeah. :) It's fun :) There's lots of stuff you do which can be exercise or used to do, but don't see it as exercise because it was fun :) That's the best kind of exercise :)

storm

Yay, let's play jumprope! XD

Hmm, ours didn't have place names... but I just remembered that we used to go "1,2,3" when we were jumping, then it would go down to "1,2", then "1".

I just tried youtube/googling for it, but all I can come up with is Chinese jumprope, which is not exactly what we did, but we had a variation of Chinese jump rope too.

Skipping can be so much fun! ^_^ :
(The vid's called Chinese jump rope but I don't think they're playing the game, looks more like a competition)

My favourite was double dutch.. I dunno if you remember what that is? But it's like... 2 ropes going in at opposite yeah.. Hmm :) Lol. But like.. I was so proud when I could finally do it :) Edit again. :) they have double dutch in the video about 2 mins in :)
Ahh now I want to skip :P

Man. Some of those kids do crazy stuff.. O_o Lol. O_o They're like. :o

Call me easily amused but that video was freeeeeaking awesome man! I love double dutching and I was really good at it, I could properly run on the spot and jump in and out of it.. that was when I was 11 lol. Like storm, I don't think anyone my age would be into skipping but it's definitely a great way to keep fit, really helps with cardio too.

We'd need good support to prevent knocking ourselves out now lol.

Of course this thread comes up as school has turned me into a huge bum with no time to workout.

My workout, usually lasting about an hour, consists of cardio and lifting.

My typical cardio is a 3-5 mile run, it depends, sometimes i do interval training or w/e... For you though storm, if you're worried about your joints (i.e. knees) an elliptical is definitely the way to go seeing as it's a great low-impact cardio machine. That being said, cardio's a pretty personal thing and there are so many options... If I were you I would definitely look for more lifting guidance (if you're considering putting that in your workout) just because some techniques out there can be really dangerous if you don't watchout.

For my lifting routine (nothing too serious, mostly toning) I have two regimens that I rotate each workout. I strongly recommend this, it gives you a chance to give your muscles a rest and it really is just better. Additionally, each day should focus on specific muscle groups, working a muscle group out in different ways is better than working out every muscle group in just one way. But if you're just starting out cardio's probably the first thing you're gonna want to tackle.

(fyi:) It might be worth looking into no-weights-needed exercises too as you're get started. Planks (i swear by these), crutches, calf raises, squats, lunges, are all easy to do after a run. Especially the planks. Love those.

If you want me to let you in on some of my exercises, let me know :)

and as always - warm-up and stretching are crucial, and a stretch after your workout as well... and don't forget protein an hour before/after your workout!

Despite being a pretty keen sports fan (mostly cricket and Aussie Rules Footy), I'm pretty unco and not very naturally athletic :P. Fitness wasn't as much of a problem when it came to sprints- but lol, endurance/cross country, as well as most ball sports tended to expose my many weaknesses :S. At school though, I played Volleyball and Netball- but since then I've tried to still include some regular/organised exercise by joining the gym/attending 3/4 times a week, generally very early in the morning. I used to bike and swim a little more- but now I only do those occasionally. Walks/jogs/runs are fun too :)

I don't really exercise that much any more. I used to be really active doing all sorts of sports, but now the most exercise I get is walking. I'm too skinny right now though, so I should just stop moving at all and eat loads more so I get fatter. :P

I believe ours was "Inside, outside, on the rails"
"On the rails" actually makes more sense than "puppy dog's tails" if you think of the actual elastics game.
"inside" - you have both your feet in between the elastics, then jump to "outside" where both of your feet are on the outside of each elastic, and then the "puppy dog's tails"/"on the rails" is where you had to jump and land with one foot on each elastic (on each rail?).

As for exercise, I don't do anything really structured, but tend to get a fair bit of physical activity just playing with the kids - backyard cricket, backyard soccer, backyard football, frisbee, beach games etc along with all the walking around to and from after school activities and helping out the team coaches during soccer and netball season and so on.

Oh, and I play netball once a week myself...and now that Uni is over, I was thinking about doing a bit of swimming after dropping the kids at school.....and have started jogging again. Gave it up after doing the Point to Pinnacle (http://www.pointtopinnacle.com.au/)"fun run" as I had trained hard all year to complete that, and once I did it, I was sort of over running....but I started to get interested in it again a few weeks ago so put on the old running shoes again. There's something soothing about the rhythmic 'slap' 'slap' 'slap' of your feet hitting the ground....idk...for me, anyway.
