Right, kids – school is in! The search is on, as NoHints put it so nicely, for the Forum SmartyPants, otherwise known as The Dux/Valedictorian of the Forum
The New Year brings a different type of competition where you can be involved in as few or as many of the stages as you want. The full comp will be made up of 5 rounds – each being based on different school subjects – English, Science, Music, Maths and Humanities/Art, but if you don’t want to be/can’t be part of all of it, there are plenty of opportunities throughout to win special mentions and other awards.

The full comp lasts for a loooooooooong time, and will be interrupted for things like Valentines Day and Easter…..but should give you something interesting to do in between ;)

Here’s how it works:
Points are gained in each subject round via various methods, and are added together to give a final Grade for that subject. Each subject (whilst not necessarily having the same scoring method or number of points to score) will carry the same weight for the overall Grade – ie each subject will be converted to a Grade out of 100, and the total Grade will be out of 600. Each subject, however, will have its own Master, so if English is your forte, you can enter that round only and be happy being the Master of English.

Note this is not an academic test/quiz where the answers can be easily found via Google – it involves some more….unusual and interesting ways of gaining points related to each subject - some involving skill, some involving luck, and some of which have been shamelessly lifted from ideas in the forum games section ;)

How the bonus points work:
You get 25 bonus points the first time you enter.
These Bonus points can be used by you at any stage - but once they are used, they are gone.
You can use them in a round you do not enter to get 25 points for that round, however, most rounds have a total maximum points of around 200, so it's not likely to do much.
At the end of each round, I will post what the maximum score possible for the round is, and you need to tell me BEFORE the closing date for that round whether you wish to use some bonus points.
You do not need to use all 25 points at the same time, you can spread them across rounds.
Any bonus points you do not use before the end of the competition will be added to your total Dux score.
The rounds will be done in the order listed - ie English, Science, Music, Maths, Humanities/Arts. (I have combined the Humanities and Art rounds to even up the max points available in each round.)

More about Bonus Points:
Your final score for each round will be calculated like this:
(Total points gained from the questions + any bonus points you choose to use) DIVIDED BY (the total maximum points available in that round +25) * 100

Note that maximum points are not likely to be gained by anyone in any one round due to each round having some kind of poll that ranks a particular answer....however, the maximum points available in each round (not including the 25 bonus points) is between 180 and 280. I really don't want to commit to any more detail as I am still finalising the later rounds.......but hopefully that gives people some info to work on for their bonus points.

What prizes can I get?
There are three levels of prizes, which I am currently talking to da bosses about:

The Dux of the Forum (DOF) will be the person with the highest Grade when adding the weighted scores of all 6 subjects plus any bonus points together.

Special Plaques will also be given to the Master of each subject – ie the entrant with the highest Grade in that subject, and

Honourable Mentions will be offered to winners of some of the rounds within some of the subjects – these will all be notified as they come up.

Instructions: Just follow the instructions as I put them up ^^

Oooh, this looks interesting.

Just to clarify, (Dux (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dux), lifted directly from Wiki)
Dux (plural: duces) is Latin for leader (from the verb ducere, 'to lead') and could refer to anyone who commanded troops, such as tribal leaders.

NoHints
30-12-2008, 12:57 AM
I think this meaning is more likely:

In schools in Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Iceland, Dux is a modern title given to the top student in academic and sporting achievement (Dux Litterarum and Dux Ludorum respectively) in each graduating year. In this usage, Dux is similar to the American concept of a valedictorian. The runner up may be given the title Proxime Accessit (meaning "he came next") or Semidux.

The forum is slightly lacking in troops to command for the Roman meaning to really be valid...

The search for the Forum Smartypants begins!

And Ches gets 10 bonus points already just for that drawing.
And....hmmm - that picture under your name.....I wonder if that could be a way of attaching the awards to people's titles.....is there a maximum length that a persons rank can be? You could just add a little award icon to the front of their title :P (or however you did that)

HEHE - that would be fun (I secretly would like to be Julia Zemiro)

OK, I have changed the bonus points thing. I was going to give everyone who entered 25 bonus points throughout the comp to use - I thought it might be an interesting way of getting people to put in a little extra effort.....but I suppose it does look unfair without that explanation. So I'll just give everyone 25 bonus points when they enter instead. (less what you've already got if you've already got some) :P

This is the BEST COMPETITION EVER. IF I HAVE TO RATE IT OUT OF 10, IT GETS A 10/10! WAY TO GO, SAFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!! U ROCKKKKKKKK!

Regarding those 25 bonus points, can we use it for a round we don't participate in? Like... Can I use it for the Art Round coz I'm terrible at Art and won't take part in it? Or should I not use it for Art coz I've decided not to take part in it? But in a way... It's unfair... If the Maths round is AFTER the Art Round, and someone decides to kick my butt... and I've already used my 25 points in the Art Round... and another person is just a few points behind me in the Maths Round... and he/she decides to use the 25 bonus points... that means he/she pwns me in Maths, yes?:cry::cry: OMG CHEATER!!!:cry::cry:

I think you should make the rules regarding these 25 bonus points clearer...

Sorsie
31-12-2008, 02:25 PM
I think it's more like... the total is out of 600... so if you don't participate in the art round you're 100 off from the top.. but that wont affect you if you're trying to get the top in Maths. If you want the top in maths you should probably get all your questions right and use as many of your bonus points in that round?
To become the better at maths I think it's just like.. per round specific you can get an award or in total. Make sense? I dunno that's what I took for it to mean.

But then I'll get 0 in the Art Round...:sad: I won't even be able to use those 25 points there...

So, actually... This whole thing is out of 575. We already have 25 points with us...? Then what's the point of using them somewhere else? If English is out of 100, say, and I already get 100/100... and I decide to use the 25 bonus points, so I get 125/100??? or 125/125? The ones who haven't used it get 100/100..., or whatever. What's the difference? I think you ought to make this clearer, Saff.

Alessadri
01-01-2009, 10:21 AM
er...

To my understanding...

this one is out of 600... (bonuses don't like to be at the denominator)
If many people get 100 in English... the winners are those who choose to use the Bonus now. So if you want to use the bonus elsewhere, you can try and become a winner there.

Saffron

OK, without giving it all away.....I doubt that it is going to be possible for anyone to get 100% in any round, as most rounds contain a question that involves other forumites voting in a poll, and due to the welcome variation in people's opinion, no-one has ever received 100% in polls on this forum :P

Each round will be converted to a score out of 100. This will be calculated by: (their actual score + any bonus points they choose to use) divided by (the maximum score available + 25)

Its up to each entrant how they want to use their bonus points. It's all part of the game.

storm
01-01-2009, 11:29 AM
Uh oh... So I'll have to get 100% in the Maths Round + use those 25 points, so that I win it FOR SURE? ...

I don't think you can be sure of winning it just by getting all the questions right and using your 25 point bonus, because if someone else also gets 100/100 in Maths and decides to use their 25 extra points in that round, then you and that person will both have the same score.

Unless Saff has some kind of question in each round which rules out the chance of any two people getting the same score (like some kind of ranking system for a question).

But then I'll get 0 in the Art Round...:sad: I won't even be able to use those 25 points there...

Yeah. It'll be hard to decide how many bonus points to use where.

So, actually... This whole thing is out of 575. We already have 25 points with us...? Then what's the point of using them somewhere else? I think it's going to be 125/100. Like Aless said, bonuses don't like to be in the denominator. Maybe you shouldn't try to convert them to percentages because it might not make mathematical sense then.

EDIT: Ahh, The Spice posted before me. Oh well. At least this shows I've understood the rules right XD

Saffron

Go here (http://www.isketchforum.net/dof-round-1-t2923.html), gingie1 - the first 3 questions for the English round are up.
Just PM (Private Message) me the answers before midnight 23 January (your time). The rest is explained in the thread I linked you to.
Be great to see you enter

It already has; we're just unsure of the rules, especially the bonus points!

And I think you are the only one who is unsure of the bonus points, Maths. It's simple. You get 25 points when you enter. You can use them whenever you want, to add to your score for any round. It's up to you when you use them. At the end of each round, when I give a summary of all the things required to compete in that round, I will ask you if you want to use some or all of your bonus points in that round. You tell me how many you want to use (if any) and I add that to your score.

Again - your final score out of 100 for any round will be calculated: (Your score out of the available points + any bonus points you elect to use) DIVIDED BY (the total maximum score possible for that round + 25) Any bonus points you haven't used by the end of the comp will be added to your total Dux score.

I have crunched the numbers across a range of scenarios (I <3 Excel) (http://www.isketchforum.net/group.php?groupid=5) and it is only advantageous to hold your bonus points to the end if you get 100% across all 5 subjects. Which is not possible. Anything from about 80% down, you are better off allocating some bonus points to various rounds. Ya gotta learn to live with uncertainty! :P

Dean
04-01-2009, 01:15 PM
are you certain of uncertainty? I for one am uncertain about the certain possibility.

Are all subjects going to have 6 questions each/be worth the same number of total points before being converted to a percentage?

Saffron
04-01-2009, 10:38 PM
The total scores for each round is not exactly the same, no. I changed it to 5 rounds (adding Arts and Humanities together) because the total points available in those rounds was substantially lower, so it evened it up more. Each round doesn't have the same amount of questions either. I am converting them to a score out of 100 so that each subject has the same weight for the final grade.

With the answers/results - I will put answers up after the deadline is passed for each round and before the next subject round begins. Results....hmmmmm.....I think I will put up the results at the end of each round. This might help with the bonus points - you can see who has used them etc.

Ok, I've not been around lately and was halfway through entering the current ducky competition when I stumbled across this thread (I don't even know how I saw/missed it :S :embarrassed:)
Here’s how it works:
...Each subject, however, will have its own Master, so if English is your forte, you can enter that round only and be happy being the Master of English.
Whaaaaaaa?! So we can't enter English, Maths and Science? How about if we enter a couple just for fun, even if it's not our forte because we're too impatient and can't wait for the round relevant to us? But then what if you accidentally become the master of a subject that you didn't want to be become the master of? Could you still go on to enter the subject you really want to be a part of properly?

I think the word can is the operative word. I assume that anyone can enter any round that they like :)

If this can happen, it also means that one person can become master of several subjects, and not just one.

I think the operative word should be could ;)

Yes, that would make more sense.

Sorry *AJ* - the boys are correct. :embarrassed: You could enter just English if that was all you were interested in. To be the Dux, it is obviously advantageous if you enter all rounds.

I thought I'd make a little comp for users of this Forum.
With lot and lots of different things, just so's I wouldn't bore 'em.
From what the entrants say so far, it seems they do adore 'em
But all these blinking points to gain - now I have to score 'em!!
But I shall go ahead and mark, with fairness and decorum,
(I hope my filing system is designed just right to store 'em.)
My fingernails are getting low due to the way I gnaw 'em
I wouldn't have guessed half the answers - if I hadn't saw 'em.

Planning on entering the comp Saff?
That poem of yours made me laugh!
You may say you're the competition staff,
And winning your own comp would be quite a gaffe!
But remember Question 4 is down to votes,
You'd gain no advantage by seeing your notes,
And although you'd know the authors of the other posts,
We'd be none-the-wiser as to the names of the po'ts!

Sparrow, I'm slightly disturbed. You don't really pronounce "laugh" to rhyme with "saff" do you? Do you say "glass" instead of "glarse" too? (lol) You dirty lil Westender

Saff, thanks for the clafication/correction on entering. I think the worrying word was "only". Ah well, I shall enter whichever of the ducks seem funnest! :D

/me sets jen some maffs homework :p
