Without permission from the forum administration (I'll bet they'll let us do this), I present:

The Great Forum FavIcon Competition

►What is a FavIcon?
- It's that little image you see next to the URL. It also appears in the Favourites menu.

►How do I participate?
- Simple: Create an image of 16 x 16 pixels, GIF or PNG format, 256 colours.
- Make it appropriate and representative for the ISketch forum. (Note, this is not for the game itself!)

►Where do I send my entries?
- isketchforumcompo@gmail.com
-There is a maximum of two entries per person!

****

:!::idea: The competition closes on FRIDAY JULY 13 <<

So that's plenty of time!

Afterwards, we will have an anonymous poll vote to decide the winner! Do NOT vote for yourself.

What if we can create it as a proper .ico file (not just a .gif or .png renamed)?

Well apart from it making whoever does look like a geek :D

Also if needed I would like to offer to convert the winning entry to the proper icon format if you would like.

Nay

Well I need it in gif or png because I need to post the entries in a new thread so people can vote for them. I can't display an .ico file on a webpage.

The idea was to then convert the winning image to an .ico. If you like, you can do that (so I won't have to download software for that).

But please sent a .gif or .png as an entry; I don't want to convert everything into an image, upload it and post it.

Thanks for the offer

Katie: Yes, I did that on purpose

Outstanding idea Dinnae, i shall get drawing my usual n00b drawings in a second. But first, might i add that before the forum changed servers we had a favicon that was essentially the iS with the isketch letters on them. The favicon that you see now is the one assigned by our current host, I'm not sure it can be changed. Also, if it can be changed, that the winner favicon actually gets used that'd be up to Peter. Also, given that this is a member run competition, nothing special can be given unless Peter decides so. Please, pretty please Peter!

I remember the old one! Not sure I have the creativity to do one though :(

It's Fy and Vik's idea really (from a thread elsewhere in the forum). I just turned it into a compo.
I couldn't think of a reason why it would be a problem to use the winning logo so I just went ahead without asking. It should be changeable, really. Otherwise we can collectively bug the forum's host.

If all fails and it doesn't get used, we'll just print the winning logo and glue it onto our monitors where it's supposed to show up :D

Question remains, does the host allow this favicon to be changed? I see no reason why they wouldn´t, and i might have just asked the dumbest question in the history of mankind there... but i´m curious.

Most if not all GOOD web hosts wont put a restriction on somthing like the favicon. and if they did they would override it server side so even if you added one you wouldnt see yours.

You can also add to the HTML a couple of tags you can put in the <head></head> tags of the HTML if you want to use another file name (the tags I use on my own website http://www.invictachat.net/favicon.ico and yes as I just demonstrated there you can use a proper .ico as an image on a web page.):
<link rel='icon' href='http://www.invictachat.net/favicon.ico' type='image/x-icon' />
<link rel='shortcut icon' href='http://www.invictachat.net/favicon.ico' type='image/xicon' />

A useful site about favicon's: http://www.rw-designer.com/favicon

Also from what I can see on the isketchforum.net's host's web site they allow your own custom favicon :)

It's a box with a red X in it from where I'm sitting...

I don't see one at the moment..

However, I shall have a go! Sounds fun!

Huh?? All I see is technical jibberish. Please decifer into 'mid thirties lady jargon' please!

Nay
15-06-2007, 06:19 PM
Fairy: all you need to do for the competition is design the thing (which is just a simple 16x16 pixels image). The rest will be taken care of

That site basically explains how to implement it in your web page. If you don't already know how to use HTML code, it's gibberish, but it's really quite straightforward. It's a small line of code that you put in the header of your web page's code.

It's actually quite hard to capture this forum in 16x16 pixels, I've noticed. But take it as a challenge!

Aye, that is so true! I'm strugging with ideas. It needs to be something that the eye will understand at 16x16 pixels

It looks like the icon circled in red in the attacged screen shot.

Nay

Maybe we could give the logo a redesign while we're at it -haha.
Something more unique specifically for this forum (then the Favicon would be a small version or a detail of it).

Just logged on today, & up until now I've never seen an icon for this page, but there's one there all of a sudden.
Anyone else seeing something that hasn't been there before, or is my computer just verrrry slow to update it?

MsNerdinator
25-06-2007, 05:30 PM
I can see that square FavIcon. A tiled sort of thing. I've been seeing that for ages though.

Desgining a FavIcon is hard. I can come up with designs and such, but they're far too complicated for one.
/slap things needing to be small.
I might just give up :P

Nay
25-06-2007, 05:35 PM
No, you cannot give up.
You wouldn't even want to if you knew what the consequences were! >:)

So far we have 1 entry... and I'll make one or two ('cos you can do two!) before the dead line as well.

Come on people! Anyone can participate because it's a really small logo; you can use the pencil tool in MS paint and it will still look good (and competitive!)

MsNerdinator

Is that a threat? lol..

tasha
25-06-2007, 06:34 PM
Nope, i don't see the tiled thing - it's something else..can't tell what it is actually it's kind of blue & white though.
I think it's a letter.. looks like a J but probably isn't.

I'll put a picture up.. hold on.

What tasha is seeing is the favicon.ico that ships with vBulletin http://www.invictachat.net/forum/favicon.ico

If you point your browser at http://www.isketchforum.net/favicon.ico then when there press Ctrl+F5 should reload it as the correct icon.

tasha
25-06-2007, 08:09 PM
Pressing ctrl & F5 just refreshes doesn't do anything other than refreshing the page.
Image doesn't change.

Unless you meant the one I can see is the one that should be there?

Nay
25-06-2007, 09:09 PM
Tasha, you're seeing the 'new' one... which is a V (not a J) for vBulletin.
See, that's an ambiguous one. You don't know if it's a v of a j. Surely we can do better right -haha

25-06-2007, 09:13 PM
Ifff I make one, can I email an explanation with it?

Nay
25-06-2007, 09:16 PM
You can, but the people who pick their favourites won't get the explanation. It has to speak for itself.

Not to... deter you .. or anything

Do we have to draw it ourselves? Or can we edit a pic from somewhere? Is that cheating? lol

See, what I said was at everyone else seeing the old icon, which was the 9 blue squares. the Ctrl+F5 was to show the one you already see...

And it is indeed a V as you can see by the full size logo at http://www.vbulletin.com

If it's not in against rules, it's allowed -haha

Have fun using other pictures in a 16 pix² area though

Peter
25-06-2007, 11:41 PM
The blue squares one is just the default host favicon. I did have the 'iS' from iSketch as the favicon before we switched host, must have just not uploaded it on the new host.

I don't have a problem with a comp though, will be quite interesting to see what people can come with in 256 pixels. I might enter the old icon, lol.

Vik
26-06-2007, 08:25 AM
That's weird, now I see the V favicon!

Dinnae, my wonderfully professional and original entries will be winging their way to you shortly lol.

I didn't even know what a Favicon was until this competition, so forgive me my newish attempts :P

I made one in paint, it's doable. It's only a few pixels
