I don't know anyone who is offended by the term Merry Christmas? Its completely ridiculous that people are saying thins like "the night before holiday", or "we will be closed Dec 25th for the holiday". Why don't they just say Christmas?

I don't think they would be offended per say, shops probably just appreciate that there are multiple cultures and religions in the country with similarly dated holidays to Christmas. Take the example of Judaism, the festival of Hannukah occurs at the same time as Christmas.
