View Full Version : Help us name our baby!!!
LOL!
So, we're incredibly indecisive. We had a ton of names which we both liked, and we've managed to cut it down to the final 3.
I'd be happy with any of these names, as would my husband, so now we're looking for outside opinions.
Please vote, and if you like, also let us know why you like a name, or why you dislike one, what associations the name has for you etc.
If one of these IS your name, please let us know if you like being called it!
There will be a middle name as well, but we're not opening that particular can of worms just yet. If you do think of a middle name which goes well with any of the ones above, please post it!
Thanks!

I voted Isabelle :) But I do like the other names too - lol
As for middle names - Tempus or Fugit should be given due consideration

Lol, I like the way that all of us together could potentially name your baby
I like all of those names, you have given good choices, but Isabelle is the one that stands out for me. Maybe it is because I knew an Isabelle at school who was really friendly towards everyone, I don't know.
Also, the name can be shortened to Belle perhaps when she is older, because lots of families have single-syllabled nicknames for each other now.

Hmm.. I think I like Isabelle too. It's kinda fruity but not. :)
I don't really like Lucia for some reason... It kinda reminds me of someone from harry potter, like narcissa and stuff. :P
And I have a best friend called Alice, so I love the name but I wouldn't pick it above other names. :)
And also Isabelle is close to bella.. >.>
That's my opinions :)

I vote Lucia, two names we had chosen before we knew the sex were Lucy and Luke / Lucas.

If you're having a middle name as well, make sure you remember to check that her 'acronym', so to speak, isn't anything embarrassing. ;P
I know what you mean! We have to check in two languages, too...

Isabelle! :D
I like the other too, as well.. but Alice not so much. Purely 'cause I loved Alice In Wonderland as a kid. And I can't quite seem to shake off the name being associated to that :( So when I hear Alice, I always say "in wonderland" in my head.. O_O But I'm just a freak like that :P
I really does love Isabelle though :) It's got a nice UK/German feel to it. Don't know how or why.. it just seems to fit in well with both countries.
The one reservation I have with Alice is 'Alice? Who the **** is Alice?'
I hate that song and I think I'd have to kill anyone who sang it around our daughter if we chose that name, lol.
One of my good friends over here is also expecting, with a due date one month behind us.. (Valentines baby, how cute!) and when I just now asked her opinion, her face fell, as she said Isabelle is top of her list for a girl! Oh noes! I can't be *that* person who steals her most beloved name :(
But you SAID it first Vik! I voted Isabelle too. I think it 'fits' your name and Mr Vik's name.
On the plus side if it's not a girl and it turns out to be a boy (mistakes happen!) you could always choose Herman

If I've learnt my lesson from these things, it's to never discuss baby names with people that are expecting if I'm pregnant. xD
Well, I'm glad we found out now rather than setting our hearts on the name 100% and THEN finding out. Or waiting until the birth and then breaking my friend's heart by announcing that we called our daughter their name...
BUT they don't know yet if they are having a boy or a girl, so until then, Isabelle is still on the table :)
Weirdly enough, their number one choice for a boy (Alexander) was also ours....

Hmmm I voted Lucia because I've always thought that the name Lucy was incredibly cute and can grow with a person for sure...but also because I instantly thought of the opera Lucia di Lammermoor which has really beautiful music (although Lucia does go mad at the end of it, but has a pretty cool scene!)

Kaspar was named from an opera too...he was definitely the bad guy in the opera Der Freischutz. He was the guy who had sold his soul to the devil!!
But yeah, I like Lucia...
I don't really care for Isabelle just because it is SO common over here. Alice neither because I had a really irritating music teacher in high school named Alice haha.
Middle names....what is your middle name? That's what I would have used if I had a girl (my middle name is Marie). I chose Kaspar's though through a saints list, and I really wanted a name with just one syllable (I chose Jude). He's the patron saint of adverse situations...so I thought it was kind of fitting in a way.
Anywho, there's my two cents!

My sister's called Alice, i spent too much time around her on holiday and she got annoying, so me and my cousins liked to wind her up by singing living nextdoor to Alice, she probably hated it more when we sang Alice the camel, though.
I like Isabelle. Good luck, hope everything continues to run smoothly
Yup - my husband really likes Lucy and so do I, although I thought Lucia would be better as at least she has options once she grows up to go with something a little more mature sounding (imo).
LOL Katie - Alice the camel - it's all that's been running through my head these last few days.
Isabelle is definitely the most popular right now from the 3... which does put me off somewhat. I'd hate her to be Isabelle M., or 'little Isabelle' or whatever in school because of it.

Vik. I dunno if this advice will help. BUT this is what I did with my girls. I gave them a more contemporary name and a more "mature sounding" name too so they could switch as they get more mature if they wish. Plus i made sure, that the names flowed off the tongue when said right after the other. Here are the names: Kristen Lorraine. Amber Jeanne. Anna Elise.
They are very happy to have these options to thier names indeed! It makes them defs feel like I had thier interests at heart..which of course I did! I love all your choices. They are very classic indeed and variants of some i like...like Alicia, Lucille, Isabella (the latin influence obviously with the ending in the A) ect... its tough. I will vote ;) Dunno if my advice helps but it is something to think about. A very classic and a more contemporary mix so the choice is there for your baby when she gets older! Either way, whatever you choose... I am sure ..will be ..perfect! <3 <3
No doubt in my mind: Lucia.
I have a friend named Lucy, who is really nice (she wouldn't be my friend, otherwise ;)), and I had a teacher in primary school who was called Lucia, and she was my favourite.
Most of all, though, it's a pretty name.
I think we've made up our minds now :)
Thanks for all the feedback and advice - you are a great bunch!
Now that we have something to call her rather than just 'her' it's made it all even more really real :P
Can't wait until January to meet..... her.

Your name choices are lovely. I think Isabelle is such a beautiful name- if I have a baby girl then that is what I would call her. Just need to get myself a man!
Isabelle is a nice name. Think it was one of the options for my sister when she was born. Although whenever I hear the name, I always want to follow it with 'necessary on a bike'. But that's probably just me.

Boy, I've missed a lot! Congrats Vik, when are you due?
I love the name Lucia; I've fiddled around with it a lot when I get an urge to do some creative writing. The fact that it means "light" in Latin is a major plus, but I don't know how much emphasis you're placing on the meanings behind the names.
Hiya Gracie! Long time no see :)
We're due on the 15th of January - very excited :)
I may as well spill the beans as it's settled now - we're going with Lucia (Lucy at home). I also love the meaning, although that wasn't the reason we picked it - just an added bonus.
Now we're looking for a middle name - any ideas?

I need to hear your husband's last name for that. I think you did tell me before, but I forgets? That's the only way I can personally play around with a middle name (if you have the first and last). Or maybe that's just me? XD
Lucia is nice, btw :) That "is a bell necessary on a bike" thing is bothering me now since Ches said it.. !
Last name is fairly longish and sounds a bit like Monica.
I do like Isabelle, but it's sooooo popular right now - in Germany and in the UK. We didn't want the same name as 4 other little girls in her Kindergarten!
MrsNerdinator

Lucia Lexi Monica
Lucia Louise Monica
Lucia Rachel Monica (Could change that to Lucia Rachel Chandler Phoebe Joey Ross Monica. LOL! Sorry.. :( )
Okay, I better stop adding Monica, lol..
Lucia Celine
Lucia Abigail
Lucia Marie
LUCIA ISABELLE!
Okay, so I suck at this. I'm far better at picking names for myself if I have more kids. haha XD We've already got girls and boys names sorted for if we had like.. 5 more kids? something like that :P
I like Lexi, can't go with Louise (my middle name, husband hates it), and I have known to many ♥♥♥♥♥y Rachels to go with that one. I really like the other four, and the last two are already on the list :)
MrsNerdinator

*gasp* I picked two that are already on your list? :o What are the chances! Ha!
/me is well chuffed with herself XD
I really like Abigail for some odd reason. It's not too common a name, and everyone that I've known who had that name were nice people XD Including film characters.. rofl. Not that it's relevant, heh.
Oh, and I forgot that Louise was your middle name, heh. My bad.
Hmm, Abigail... :) It looks funny... did I spell it wrong or something?
I'm rubbish at picking names but Lucia Abigail is a good 'un.
OK. Abigail is out, Mr. Vik discarded it without a second look, although it was quite growing on me. We've decided not to use the other possible first names either as we may want to use them with future children! We have narrowed it down to four possibilities.
Lucia Ann (named for my grandmother, who I don't really know too well, but tradition and duty and all that...)
Lucia Evie (the combined meaning would be 'light and life' which I think is quite cool - was also my husband's top choice for a first name, which I rejected as I'm not keen on shortened versions as first names and he didn't like Evelyn or Eve)
Lucia Jasmin (my father-in-law's number one choice, which I do quite like as I think 'nature' names are nice - she'd always have that flower associated with her)
Lucia Rowan (another nature name, I like it 'cause it sounds quite strong - not quite as girly as the others, which balances out Lucia quite nicely).
So that's our final four. The surname sounds like (but isn't) Monica. Just interested to hear opinions!
TempusFugit
12-10-2009, 05:22 PM
Lucia Rowan is my favourite.
Lucia Ann - in my humble opinion - the A in Lucia stumbles on the A in the Ann (if you get my drift )
Lucia Evie - I do like this, but a little girl in my son's name is named Evie (and she isn't very nice lol)
Lucia Jasmin - It is beautiful, but Jasmin is quite popular.
Lucia Rowan - agree with what you said re: strong. It is also unusual, but not in a chavesque way ;)
MrsNerdinator
12-10-2009, 08:39 PM
They're all very nice names!
Hoooowever.. Lucia Jasmin (Monica, lol) gets my vote :)
Your baby already smells beautiful to me. HA! I guess you won't have to worry about the smells of the nappies and such.. heh. I like Evie too, but Jasmin more :)
I've never been fond of Ann - but that's just a personal thing. It's far too common a name. And waaaaaaay too common for a middle name!
And Rowan.. I can understand why you like that one. But for me, I think it's just a tad bit too much on the masculine side for me to like it on a girl. Does that sound sexist? O_o 'cause I don't mean to. I mean, some girls do have it. I dunno.. I don't know how to express what I'm trying to say! >.>
(Psst.. out of all the names, I do like Lucia Abigail, but I think the one that rolls off the tongue the best, is definitely Lucia Marie. That's the one I would have gone with if it was my baba. But yeah, I likes Lucia Jasmin :))

I like how the femininity of Lucia is balanced out by Rowan.
If you're still open to names, I like Lucia Dale Monica and Lucia Ria Monica.
Both nature names and I think they roll off the tongue nicely. :)
gracie
15-10-2009, 07:54 PM
I love Lucia Rowan. It's a very well-rounded name.
I don't like Ann. I do like Evie, but with Lucia ending in a vowel, I'd hesitate to choose a middle name that starts with a vowel (like what TF said, it stumbles.) If you're considering alternatives, Zoe also means "life" in Greek.
"Jasmine" is fits the category of a nature name which I like, but I don't think the two names fit well together... (More nature names, though: Heather, Willow?)
As for storm's suggestions... I wouldn't pick Ria just because it rhymes (or at least I think it does, which means other people might think that too?)
Pick Lucia Rowan. I don't think names get much better than that one. :)
Secretly, I like Rowan the best too! It's the only one that's really my choice as the others are either named for a grandparent, loved by by in-laws, or loved my by husband.
I suggested it to my mum last night and she said 'isn't that a boys' name?'
So far suggestions from my side of the family include 'Fifi' and 'Williams'. From my dad and my 5 year old niece - I'll leave it up to you to assign who said what!
I still quite like Ann, but only with Lucy. I know what you mean about the vowels running into each other with Lucia. If my husband really can't let go of Evie then I'll capitulate, I want him to feel involved with this baby as much as possible! And it IS a nice meaning.
I think my father-in-law has been humoured enough with Jasmin! He can't say we dismissed it out of hand. No-one on the British side of the family likes it, my mum said it sounds tarty! I think the flower is beautiful, but I can't say I love the name.
I think the German lot are going to have a hard time with Rowan though - it's simply not a name here. The translation of the tree name would be 'bird-berry tree' - haha.
It's hard enough to name a baby when you're both from the same culture/country!

I haven't been here in awhile, I think the last time I was here was when you first announced your pregnancy, Vix. I'm glad things are going well for you. I love the names that are being suggested, and I think I like Rowan best... with a little twist, though. How about Rowanne? It keeps the Rowan part, but adds a little femininity, and I like the way it flows when you say them together. And when you're mad, LUCIA ROWANNE! has a nice impact.

The more I see people saying "Lucia", the more it is growing on me.
I would agree that having a middle name that starts with a vowel would not flow as well as one with a consonant.
How about Lucia Jo or Lucia Joy? I like the J sound after the A of Lucia :)
I like Lucia Marie...
and lol at Lucia Fifi...
I do like the sound that Lucia Marie makes - it flows together very nicely. However, the name has no meaning for us - no Maries in the family or anything. Plus it doesn't have a nice meaning - something to do with bitterness I think. It would just be a nice sounding filler name.
Ann DOES have a meaning to us - as does Rowan actually - my grandmothers were/are named Rose and Ann (don't bother suggesting Roseanne - hubby made a face) - and Evie - well, she'd be our first girl and the meaning 'life' really appeals to us.
I think basically those choices are the final options for us, although it's been fun reading your suggestions! I really like most of them although some would just be hard to have here in Germany. A name like 'Joy', which is obviously lovely, would cause a lot of confusion because it's a word-name, if you see what I mean, and people here just wouldn't get it!
I can't believe how much harder it's been to pick a middle name than a first name. Hubby doesn't really care, and I care a lot because I am known by my middle name to quite a few people so I do feel that it's important.
Now I just have to think hard about whether I'd be happy to sacrifice a beautiful sounding (imo) name for a name which would make other people in my life very happy. Am I that selfish? Would Lucia thank me for it? Argh!! Going mad :P

Don't worry about being selfish.. you're the one going through the hard work, lol :) Names are important, because they are our identities for the rest of our lives. It's a huge thing. I think deep down inside you should go for what makes you happy, but maybe that's just me, lol. For example, I wouldn't choose a middle name based on something that my parents liked or my in-laws liked, or just because it's in the 'family'. I'd go solely on what appeals to me and my husband. Maybe I am selfish.. lol. I guess I consider is more of a special thing for the parents. Other relatives are there to buy clothes for the baby and spoil it and give their opinions about names, but at the end of the day, their opinions won't affect my choices. And if they don't like it.. well who cares, :P
You've got me worried.. hubby and I found it so easy to pick out names for a girl and a boy that we've even got a list for more children (if we're blessed to have more). Not a lot of time went into them because we just really loved the names, so now I'm thinking that I 'under thought' the names :P lol.
About what gracie said about Jasmine. Yeah.. I can see where she's coming from in that it doesn't actually "fit" together. I do like the name jasmine a lot though. I think that's why, lol. Ann will never grow on me for some odd reason. It's also my mother in-laws and sister-in-law's middle names. Maybe that's why? lol. Just kidding.
Lucia Marie is still a winner for me.. even if she isn't in your final list. I'm quite annoyed that it doesn't have a nice meaning, lol. Meanings are important :)
Which choices are the final ones? I got confused. Ann and Rowan?
db1986
22-10-2009, 12:05 AM
Out of your four selected names Vik I like Lucia Rowan as well. I like that it is quite uncommon and I guess that the initials don't cause a problem in either language.
Casta_Diva
22-10-2009, 02:03 AM
I am totally for Lucia Rowan. I'm not so into the argument that it Rowan is too masculine a name for a little girl, because Lucia is ULTRA feminine (imo, but beautiful!). I also think that Lucia Marie is almost too rhyme-y but that just might be how I say it in my Canadian accent :)
BUT, you love the name, you like how it sounds and what it's meaning is, and it pays homage to both of your grandmothers without being completely obvious. I think that comprises a winner!
I know I wasn't too fussy about meanings when I was naming Kaspar...but I did check them out slightly. Despite the awful idea behind 'Kaspar' in my original source in finding it (that being an opera character who sold his soul to the devil and dies by the end of the opera), it is a modern name of one of the "three wise men" which is kind of cool. I picked Jude (not for the Beatles song or Jude Law, as I was asked a few times) because I wanted a saint's name and something that only had one syllable (as I have read that names flow better when there are fewer syllables in the middle name)...found Jude, who is the patron saint of "adverse situations" which fit into how things were going for me at the time.
But yeah, it all works out and what is most important of all is that you and your husband love it. She will love it too...I don't think it's one of those kinds of names that a teenager would be embarrassed about. Also, kids of her generation are well beyond making any Mr. Bean associations (I just thought of that, figured I'd point it out!).
And yeah, db's onto something with initials too...always a good thing to think about!
Thanks guys!
Nerdy - don't worry about under-thinking - I'm definitely over-thinking this whole thing! To be honest I think it's just become a focus of my stress right now - I can avoid thinking about more immediate things like whether we are going to be able to move house before she's born, and the 'L' word which suddenly doesn't seem too far away! The final choices are still Ann, Evie and Rowan.
Thanks DB - you're right, the initials would never be a problem!
Casta - I love the name Kaspar - the wise man association is the first thing I think of when I hear it. Isn't it funny how Lucia is feminine for you? It's not a name that's too well known in the UK apart from Mr. Blackadder (refuse to call him Mr. Bean!!).
Thanks for the encouragement everyone!

Lmao.. you should have seen me sitting here for a few good minutes trying to work out what 'l' word you could possibly be talking about. ha! I'm so stupid >.> But yeah it's good that you've got something to take your mind off of it for now :)
Out of your three final ones, I like Evie most. Rowan is growing on me, but the only thing that makes that a problem (in my opinion) is if you have a girl who will later not like having a middle name that sounds sort of masculine. That's a tough one to judge 'cause we don't know how our children grow up, lol. But then that could go for any sort of name really - masculine or not.
Lol, ignore those last two lines. That was more of me just thinking out loud XD
