Before the spring clean we used to have a thread for questions relating to general help and assistance around the Forum. I think it would be a good thing if this thread was reintroduced as quite often, people are to shy to come forward and say "How do you do that?" Fender also did a fantastic tongue in cheek image as well - it made me chuckle and it would be good if he could put it up again (nudge, nudge, wink, wink ).

One of my biggest bugbears is how do you create a link, but then name it! For the life of me, I just don't get it and seem to hit a brick wall every time

I note that 2.0 did a fantastic write up on how to do images within a post - and am hoping for a step by step guide response here!!

That is something I want to know in writing too. It takes me about an hour of fiddling around before I actually get it then I forget how to

Thanks for starting this up again TF

/me predicts she will be posting rather alot in here...

Do you mean link like this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/bristol/somerset/6540539.stm)?

If that's what you meant, then here's how to do it.

1. Find the link, right click it and copy it.

2. Write your post in the forum using the 'go advanced' option.

3. Choose the word (or words, or image if you're a bloody show-off like some people I could mention but won't because I am far too charitable) you wish to turn into your link, and highlight it.

4. Press the 'insert link' button. It's located underneath the smiley face drop down menu on the go advanced toolbar (not the smileys that are on the right hand side). To put it another way it's on the bottom row of the toolbar, 11th from the left. When you scroll your mouse over it, it will say 'insert link'. It's a picture of a globe, with two links from a chain in front of it.

5. You will get a box come up with space for you to paste your link. It will already say 'http://' but you can paste right over that, or delete it first and then paste your link. Or you can paste the link right after the 'http://' and the go back and delete the excess 'http://'. If you don't have to enable pop-ups, the box will come up immediately. If you have pop-ups disabled, you may have to enable them temporarily to use this function. You will know if you have to do this because a yellow bar will appear underneath your browser toolbars (the top of the screen where you type in internet addresses) telling you that something is trying to pop-up, and giving you options to deal with it. If this does happen, select the appropriate option - I've forgoten what it says in English, but something like temporarily enable pop-ups. Once you have done that, press 'insert link' again and the box with 'http://' will come up ready for you to paste your link.

6. Once your link is sitting pretty in the box, press OK and in the message box, it will have the whole link written out in [ URL] tags, with the word you hightlighted as the last word before the end of the tags. So for example, the link I did at the top looks like this, but without the gaps in the opening and closing tags.

[UR L="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/bristol/somerset/6540539.stm"]this[/URL]

7. When you press 'submit reply' the link will be automatically presented as an underlined, blue link.

Sorry for the simplistic language - it's for me, not you, because I am unsure of the correct terms for everything.

TempusFugit
10-04-2007, 12:51 PM
Hehe... well done Vik!!!

And Facey.. I do think that is how BM does his famous Red Buttons! I always wondered how!!

Basically... you put the image in the normal way.. then highlight the text and carry on with Vik's instructions! Fiddling about is the best way!!

I have a desktop recorder tool on my computer, i'm thinking i might do a series of graphic tutorials and uploading them to google video and linking them here.

I've already done a pics tutorial, just haven't uploaded it yet. Any requests or ideas of what might be good to have a tutorial on?

[noparse] tags are fun too allow you to do things like this and show the code instead of having an effect

You can find a full list of available BBCodes at http://www.isketchforum.net/misc.php?do=bbcode

Refer to this thread (http://www.isketchforum.net/showthread.php?t=1463) for instructions on how to get pics working.

I shall make two 2 minute .avi uploaded on google videos (can't access youtube from work, it's all the same in the end anyway). One on hotlinking and attaching images, and one on making links.

ty 2 xx I generally don't have problems with normal pic insertion, just adding a link to it

/me awaits some very cool videos

I'm very excited, why hasn't someone done video demos sooner??!!

Oh linking pics! Gotcha, sorry about that. Ok I shall include that in the links vid.

But the theory is really simple. Once you've added the IMG tags to the hotlink of the picture, select it and hit the URL button, you'll get a popup window asking you to insert the link you wish to have on the picture. Paste the desired link and that's it.

It would be very appreciated! As I said, I've managed to do it in my sig but couldn't tell you how tbh.

Facey, it's exactly the same principle as linking to a webpage using a word, the way I explained it above. All you do differently is hightlight all of the [ img]http://photobucket.exampleforfacey[/ img] part - in other words the picture - instead of a word, or group or words, then press 'insert link', and put the website link into the box that pops up.

[ img]http://photobucket.exampleforfacey[/ img]

Can i be picky and point out you could have used [noparse] tags to prevent the http://photobucket.exampleforfacey from being converted without having to use spaces?

You may jobe, i have committed that sin out of sheer lazyness.

Here's the other one. it's not too bad if you see it in full screen mode, without the "smooth video" option. But you still can't see what i write.

One of my biggest bugbears is how do you create a link, but then name it! For the life of me, I just don't get it and seem to hit a brick wall every time

Do you mean having www.google.co.uk (http://www.google.co.uk) but hidden under text like this (http://isketchforum.net/www.google.co.uk)?

You can type

text like this (http://isketchforum.net/www.google.co.uk)

Or you can highlight the text that you want to create as a link and click the insert hyperlink button (below the smiley dropdown menu on the advanced editor) and type in the address of the site.

Ours is google.ca, and i know that google.com works as well. weird. (http://www.google.ca)

EDIT: sweetness. thanks, Ches. :D

Tis my pleasure, gracie.

The same can be done with images

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h172/sechskie/isketchforumlogo.gif (http://www.isketchforum.net)

Which could be typed:

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h172/sechskie/isketchforumlogo.gif (http://www.isketchforum.net)

Or you can:

Use the insert image button to insert the link for your image with the [img] tags, then highlight that and click the insert hyperlink button as before to add the link that you want the picture to take you.
