Like I said I am more than happy to organise it  I will get the Rules and whatnot up soon (hopefully by tomorrow at the latest) providing members don't really mind me organising the tournament. I am thinking of running it along the same lines as Jmac's successful tournament last year - but will of course be open to suggestions/feedback/help!!!
As for Room Op's - well of course we will need them and I will put that in the Official Tournament Rules etc.
Thank you!

Should we have different games the higher up the level you go... maybe to Expert in the Final?? Or should we keep it a level playing field all the way through but with 5 strokes chucked in for good measure?
Its your Tournament... so discuss away

Is there a way to make it harder? I suppose starting with an English Easy, then English and final English Expert, but the wordlists aren't that different...
TF - I like your idea of having Expert and other lists thrown into the mix - will definately make it more itneresting, and I think fairer for all.

Some queries/suggestions have been coming up in the Rules Thread and I do think we need to get everyone's opinions on them.
Should the wordlist get progressively harder through each round you successfully go through. i.e, 1st Round - English Easy; 2nd Round - English Basic; Final Round - English Expert; or should they stay the same throughout for consistency?
Room Photographer - views welcome!
Let's try and iron out the wrinkles now, before the Tournament starts

Just make it hard to start with - UK Expert, have the semi-finals as 5 Strokes and the final as US Easy
Yeah eh? Filter out the n00bs first!
That's actually not a bad idea, but that would depend how the competitors feel about 5-stroke.
TempusFugit
13-04-2007, 09:11 AM
5 strokes for all of the semi's? It is a good idea in principle but I for one wouldn't like to do 2WBP in five strokes (but then again, I doubt if I would get through the first round )!
We need more player's views please - don't forget - it's your tournament!
I would love there to be a selection of rooms - let's not just stick with UK/US easy. Those rooms are great fun, but it would be nice to have some variety! I'd love to see a mish-mash room, but it would be too complicated with the rules and stuff. Whatever anyone suggests for different rooms, I'm in! Even if it IS Venezuelan Politics :P
If some players were a little nervous about 5-strokes, or the Expert lists, we could always do it so there is more than one word to choose from - say 2 or 3 - and the drawer only has to choose one. I think last time one of my 5-stroke words was 'disciple', or 'prophet' or something, and I really struggled. If the next person gets 'yellow' or something as their word, it would feel a bit like they got easy points. With a choice of 3 words, everyone gets a fair chance of getting a do-able word. Just a thought, probably a million reasons why it wouldn't work :P

I agree with different lists, let's use the full funess (I don't care if that's not a real word :P) of iSketch and take advantage of it's different rooms.
Buffers
13-04-2007, 11:18 AM
I agree... Having said that, I think using the science or politics lists may be a little too much as they're specialist rooms. For preliminaries I recommend Two words big pic, 5ers, big picture, or even blitz (hides from things being thrown at her).
The big picture word list was a real challenge last time, but it's a lot of fun. English Expert (either US or UK or both) should really be used in later rounds, and in the final because, well, it's the most diverse iSketch room. You can find yourself having to draw 'insurmountable', while the next person, as Vik mentioned above, can have 'cat'. lol That's very much in the spirit of the game, it's the luck of the draw.. 'draw'.. geddit? Sorry...
Please.. those who are worried about Expert, or any other room, don't. Get yourself in there for some practice time, and you'll see it's really not that scary. Also, there are drawing hints for those kind of rooms available on this forum. Syllable breakdown etc... I'm happy to post this info on the tourney thread if TF decides to go ahead and use the more complex rooms.

I am liking the suggestions here - as iSketch has many different word lists and it would definitely be a challenge for all players. So, how does this grab you
Assuming that we get three rounds of the Tournament in (I need more players please!):
First Round Word Lists:
Easy UK
Easy US
Basic UK or US (5 Strokes)**
Semi Final Round Word Lists:
Basic UK
Basic US
Basic UK or US (2WBP)**
Championship Round Word List:
Blitz or MishMash??
Connections (UK/US Basic Word List)
UK or US Expert **
I have just checked the word lists in the User Created Rooms - there is not a category for 'Expert'. However - there is a category for UK or US. I am assuming that these words are harder - but will get clarification (or if someone knows already, please let us know)!
** Depending on the majority of players nationality, a UK or US word list will be selected. We definitely need more players familiar with the US word list.
These are just my suggestions... feel free to make your own to!
Edit: Just read your post Buffers... Blitz sounds good!
Further Edit: Mish Mash is proving popular. Perhaps leave this to the Final Round whereby the players will really be tested on their skill (both at guessing and drawing)? Let me know what you think!

Sounds all great to me so far! A good mixture of words and rooms there which is exactly what the tournament needs.
My only view is to maybe not have specific word lists....like Animals or politics etc. Like Buffers said.....they are too specialised!
I'm completely happy with 5 Strokes and Blitz.....will have to practice my Connections!
Maybe we could add Mish Mash somewhere?
2WBP and Connections have to be there! Really fun rooms :)
Bad_MaNneR$
13-04-2007, 02:27 PM
Ugh connections - I dont even remember what I had for dinner let alone how the last draw can be linked to this one or whatever the hell the rules are in there. Blitz is a bit ordinary too and is really targeted at fast guessers rather than people who can draw a rapid interpretation of a word.
;o)
Facey
13-04-2007, 02:34 PM
has to be 2wbp out of that mix. As BM says, Blitz is just a fast typing contest and connections is just...well...worse!!!
I'm all for 2WBP though, 100%!
Further Edit: Mish Mash is proving popular. Perhaps leave this to the Final Round whereby the players will really be tested on their skill (both at guessing and drawing)? Let me know what you think!
I still think keeping it at the basic wordlists as they've likely been played by all competitors. Some members don't have the typing speed needed for blitz, some don't even know what connections is about. I vote for a all english competition, increasing from easy -> basic -> expert, and alternating between UK and US lists in rounds.
EDIT: but that's just this humble servan't opinion. I suppose competitors should decide that. And then again, having 2WBP, mishmash or even tandem might prove really interesting.
TempusFugit
13-04-2007, 02:42 PM
Connections is just an extension of 2WBP - you just have to remember what the last word was. With regard to the first round - the Adjudicators would have to state what the first word is and you must connect that word to the word given. Then so on and so forth.
I agree that Blitz is about getting your answers in quick - it could be fun.. but is it fair in the Final Round? Again... this discussion is about finding out what we all want and hoping that we can find a happy medium.
Edit: 2.0 - just read your post - and that makes sense too! I feel a poll coming on as soon as more suggestions are thrown about

I know the wordlists probably have already been determined but in reference to Blitz!... I just wanted to say that I feel it's kinda silly to dismiss Blitz! because it's a contest of "fast typing speeds" or any other descriptions mentioned in this post. Is this not a tournament? I suppose we should also do our best to make sure that the end results of each tournament game are complete ties and allow everyone to advance to each next round and oh yeah, in the finals let's all get ties too so we could all be winners!
Psh. A tournament is supposed to gauge skill and one of the skills required to do well in iSketch is typing speed (in addition to drawing words clearly, etc.).
Anywho, have fun.

There was a poll: http://www.isketchforum.net/showthread.php?t=1475
Maybe i should've set more days to it, but 1 more vote for blitz won't make much difference as to what most people prefer. But i see your point inco, blitz is indeed a typing skills game and after reading your point i think it would make a fine component of the tournament. Perhaps this can be done next tournament...?

17-04-2007, 08:41 PM
iSketch is about more than typing speed... although it is a very large part of what it takes to win. There is also the thought process before you type, the one that tells you what the word is... and as Incog said, the ability to draw clearly, to show the others your word.
I suppose the difference is whether the same skills you use in one room translate to all over iSketch. If you have speed, ability to portray your word and good thought process despite not being very familiar with a word list, this should work throughout the game. If you have those skills, enter the tournament, if you don't, stick to winning in your favourite rooms where the word list is familiar.
I'm neither critical of people who stick to certain rooms, or those who I call 'all rounders' who can play anywhere. Each to their own... and it would be good to have both enter. Some will, some wont. That's the way it goes.
I suppose the best advice I can give is try not to take things too seriously.... it's just a game... oh.... and don't lose your soul.

18-04-2007, 02:47 AM
er. BM. in Tandem, two people draw. it doesn't mean there'll be a tie for the win... it just means that you get the same amount of points with the other person WHEN YOU DRAW. the guessing is completely separate.

what wordlist is used in Blitz? or does it have its own wordlist?
Incognito
18-04-2007, 04:59 AM
For Blitz, the English US wordlist is used. That's what makes Blitz so awesome... Sure, fast typing speed is a major component of doing well in that room but as Buffers mentioned, it also requires a sharp, quick mind. Some of the words are rather difficult to draw and guess and even the time limit for guessing is diminished so quick thinking is needed for both the artist and the guessers.
I voted for Tandem because the wordlist offers some variety without being overly difficult. I don't remember if Double Trouble was one of the room choices though.
I already made this suggestion once on another tourney thread but no-one responded to it, and I do think it's important:
When the ops set up the room, can they please set a longer celebration time than normal? We should agree on how long it ought to be before the tourney starts so that none of the players are caught unawares.
The reasons for this are:
1. To give the ops more time to change the room and take screenshots.
2. To give spectators more time to congratulate.
3. To give the ops time to remind the players what the next round consists of.
May I also suggest again that spectators also try to screenshot the scores at the end, just in case an op has some comp troubles at the crucial time, or it doesn't work somehow, or whatever? Just to make extra sure - the comp troubles thing happened last time and me and the other mod only just got the scores in the nick of time - a heart-in-mouth experience I do not wish to repeat!

Very good idea Vik, celebrations can be set to a maxium of 99 seconds.
Also can someone post on how to switch off settings, so players don't get pm's from players in other rooms ( who might not be aware they are in a tournament). Also as mentioned before RE: admin's, perhaps an admin could let other admin's know not to enter the room, or maybe it could be including in the room title info that it is a tournament, maybe stating who the room op's are so noone else is to be pm'ed.

Probably a very wise idea Vik!!! Then rooms can be locked, and only the permitted spectators will be allowed. There will always be the odd one who watches the games while sitting on invisible though... I'm sure they'll get special dispensation. lol

OK so the times are set. Somebody point me at the place where it says "This is the Room Rules for Round 1"
Rules are already up BM... but will be expanded on. Give me a chance!
I just thought of something.
Do you think it would be wise to have a password for the spectators? Sent to them in a private message? So they would have to PM someone with the password before they were allowed in.
It would be wise... but how many members would be interested to watch! Could be hundred's and my box ain't big enough for it and time is now of the essence! I am not sure how this can be done quite frankly and the role of the room adjudicator is to carefully screen spectators and manage any unruly ones.

Thanks for clearing that up TF, I know I'm the worst culprit of writing on screen during a draw but I promise not to do it during the tourney  Oh and the only pm's I get in the chat box are porn stuff and I won't have time for that...

Turn off the message alert sound, and put a post-it note over the chat box:smile:
The post-it note can even be used for inspirational messages such as "you shouldn't be looking here"; "The person beating you plays too much" or "Try guessing 'cranberry' "

LOL  Am loving the advice! Jewels... what they say
Right.... due to not receiving PM's from the other players - I am changing the format of the tournament slightly - but this will have no bearing on the end results.
There will be ten places for the Semi Finals. To achieve this, your score must be one of the ten best played overall. In other words, not only are you up against each other in the separate matches - but as individuals, you are fighting for a place in the semi-finals!
For the finals... there will be five places. There will be two semi-final matches and the best five scores go through. Hopefully this will make things a lot simplier.
Credit is due to Vik here as I was agonising earlier how to sort out who goes through to the next rounds.
We will also all be ranked overall (a bit like you get in the Arcade) - but just so you are aware, my name is on the wooden spoon (i.e., last place)!!
There may be a tie break for the tenth (or final) place - if this is case, you will go against each other, head to head (ala Anne Robinson style).
Tournament Adjudicators - it is imperative that you keep a note (and take screen shots) of scores achieved by players. All these scores must then be tallied and posted on the forum. It will be evident then who goes through to the next round.
Any questions - just fire away. In an ideal world it would be great to keep the same format as last time around, but due to the number of players - I think this idea would work much better.

At NoHints: Is the sound really necessary? I think the fact that you actually got video recordings of the games should be sufficient. That's really awesome of you to do that. I would have done the same but it tends to lag my computer - definitely something I don't want during a tourn.

First of all, 11th place is the most agonisingly frustrating position possible. Next time there's a tournament I swear I'll have my vengence on all of you! Like in one of those films where the guy gets beaten and goes away and gives up but then meets some guy who was some big special thing who ends up training him and gets him to make a come back and beat everyone!! Hopefully that made some degree of sense to someone...
Also, with the videos, Google video made an awful job of it. Youtube is slightly better, just a bit blurry...
I've only bothered to upload one (its round two of the 2am game) because it's the only one I've put some sound in. Yes, Incognito (think it was him but amn't going to check) is right: sound isn't necessary but I think it makes it more watchable. Only thing is, getting the proper sounds was too much of a faff so I've just used sound files I had lying around........... It's not the same but I think the essence is there.....
http://youtube.com/watch?v=mkIPP7hVwhs
There's a link (might not be available yet, what with screening etc), it was never intended to be made available to you lot, just incase extra screenshots were needed so don't be too harsh! Oh, and obviously you need to view it in full screen mode and resize the browser window to actually make it out.
If there's enough interest I'll put the rest up, I don't anticipate much interest but since TF asked (possibly jokingly) for me to send them I may also upload them to something like megaupload or whatever (much better quality).
That's one hell of a ramble^

You didn't beat me so you're safe from my firey rampage of death:twisted:
Ok, I'll get them together and post them (or upload to somewhere for download if that's prefered?)
Just one question, is the sound worth having - what with it being pretty poor quality and not the right sounds. Did it make it any better to watch? I just don't think it would be the same in silence. And I did find some nice sounds for when Jae came into the first game :P (it increases the file size quite a bit though)

This is really aimed at tournament players but spectators can answer aswell, once the game has started are you getting pm's from isketchers in other rooms asking for an invite ?
Throughout yestardays match, I was getting pm's the whole time from players I had never heard of asking for invites, as I don't think they all were forum members they wouldn't have know I was a room op, so probably just picked my name at random, hence wondering if players picked tournament players at random.

I didn't get any PM's or requests for invites during my one, lowly, pitiful round in the tournament, but then, I'm not all that popular either, lol.
I also recieved no messages as a player.
Wow, I just had a few practise rounds of US Basic. I'd forgotten how crazy the wordlist is! From words like 'sock' and 'sun' to 'aloud' and 'cruel' - it's very varied!

I was getting a few messages where people asked for invites, and if they were forum members, I did tell them that I couldn't invite (only the adjudicators could). But if they asked while the match had already started, I told them it was too late to enter.
And I'm sure I did get messages from non-forum members too, but I was too busy hitting /clear to get clean screenshots (and didn't even catch what some people were saying).. so, um.. yeah, I'm bad..

Yup, it's so different to the UK wordlist. It totally threw AJ off because she's only been in the US rooms a few times. I get homesick when I'm in a US room, heh. Which is bad, because a few of my American friends put in the efforts to play in the UK rooms on a regular basis. Not sure how they do it with all the differences. /flirt Poots
Edit: I've been getting messages about the screenshots and to put them up on the forum, etc. Now sure how this is supposed to be done... But first of all, please if there are any players who do not want their pictures to be shown publicly, do let me know. Feel free to PM me to let me know if needed, even. Um.. Also, do you want to keep the screenshots in full, with the game box up there and score board? or would people want just the drawings and the artist's name above it. I have to say, some of the comments are funny in the game box, which I've managed to get in some of the screenshots. ;-)

Here's (http://www.isketchforum.net/showpost.php?p=78899&postcount=7) a little verse for all our finalists!
I really hate to be a killjoy... but is Mishmash a good idea for the final? Some people play there all the time, others not at all. Some categories can be really misleading and unclear. I love mishmash - it's definately a room I have the most fun in - but is it really the best way to determine who is the best player in the competition?
If no-one agrees with me then I shall enjoy the final with everyone else, or course - it'll be a blast no matter what - but that was just a little niggle I had that I wanted to say!
Also, what will the wordlist be?
kisskiss
01-05-2007, 06:07 PM
I have to agree with Vik, mishmash is a fun game for the clever regulars but probably not a fair way of deciding who wins. It's so specialised that it doesn't even have a regular room.
I know I'm biased cos Easy is my game and I'm not at all comfortable in mishmash but will of course play because I knew it was going to be the final by the time the comp started. Having moaned about it though - I would still prefer it to Expert! Would be useful to know if the wordlist is Easy or Basic UK/US etc xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

But if i was in the final ( very big wish lol ) id be happy to go with whatever game/ wordlist, cause its part of the fun, more challenging and id say fair play.

I know what people mean about MishMash's puns, sometimes they can be a little obscure even for those of us that play in those rooms - not that I do as often as I'd like.
I think MishMash could still be a good laugh for the final though, but how about we simply ban puns? Still leaves Something Missing, Upside Down, Birds Eye View et al .. none of which tend to be quite so esoteric.
And Incognito .. NO BLITZ!, I've played you at that and my chances against you in this final are already bad enough without that

I, for one, would've loved for there to have been no US Easy/Basic, as those who know me know that I detest the lazy US spelling! (Don't argue with me, it's my opinion!!)
I also hate Mishmash - 'puns' are stupid, as is 'something missing' - I mean, SM could be anything because everything you guess is actually missing from the picture!!
So I'm gonna go into the final with my head held high because I didn't think I'd reach the semi finals but now I'm here in the final! Oh lordy lord!
BRING IT ON, ME BABBERS!!

Usually it's something logical that's missing! Until midnight or so, when Mish Mash tends to lose all logic

Problem is that the origninal Poll to determine the rounds considered the opinions of anyone from the forum who chose to vote in the poll regardless of whether they had the stones to stand up and play. So the players in the Tournament may have been out-voted by people who just couldn't be arsed playing, yet voted for what they like. Kind of like how the crappiest gumbies in shows like "Dances With the Stars" get to continue on and almost get to the finals, all based on public vote.
So some time soon I think we should grab the opportunity to run a UK EASY ONLY Tournament and maybe US EASY ONLY Tournament. I reckon it would see a few more people playing - particularly those who haven't been keen to step up because (like me) they don't want to do Mish-Mash or Expert.
Don't look at me to organise them though, because I'll schedule all the rounds in Australian Eastern Standard Time and confuse the hell out of everyone - not that I don't already do that.
NOTWITHSTANDING - I'm looking forward to the Final of this Tournament and wondering when it's on?????

Tell me to keep my nose out :P But I do like Fen's suggestion, banning puns. Not that it a) has anything to do with me and b) can be changed now because it was set out from the start. Mind you, we should see what TF thinks about people being uneasy with MishMash. There are a few in the final that are hardcore and some just dabble, I don't think anyone could predict such differences in mishmash skill.

I like what Fender and Facey have said, too. Banning PUNs. Too bad we can't ban them forever though! :P
/whack PUNs
PUNs are far too difficult. Not that this has anything to do with me, but I've never got any of the ones that Fender draws... Fender, go generous on the rest of the players and stick to "normal" drawings in mishmash.. hehe..

Right... sorry to have not got back sooner - all Finalists - be aware, some time today you will be receiving PM's to organise the Final Match.
I will put my comments in later about the concerns regarding Mish Mash. Just for now however, can I say that this was discussed and agreed on some time ago... (or no objections were recieved when I made my decision).
I think sticking with mishmash is fine.. so long as puns are not allowed. Fender seems to agree... other finalists?

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works...please don't shoot me...lol but 'PUN' is in Mish mash usually... isn't taking it out making allowances? Surely the game is about strategy too? I dunno... just seems like changing the goal posts when they were long before set up seems odd. People knew the final was Mish mash, but some people are now complaining some are better than others... such is the nature of competition.. get some practise in is what I say! Besides...there's no-one in this final that isn't a bloody good sketcher... a little more faith in yourselves people!

Wasn't like that and you know it woman  You're far from the only one objecting to puns!
/me hugs kissy and says 'Don't be daft'.
Really, it doesn't make a difference to me... but the onus is on the artist to make their draw clear, if they don't, they wont score.
I feel bad for starting this discussion. Sorry, TF! You're right - it was decided on weeks ago.
/me hikes the kilt for mishmash!!
Oh and by way of edit, I think whoever it was who said that if you want to score points, you'll draw as clearly as possible, was right.

I know I should've kept my mouth shut about this, I was (and still am), all for mishmash in the final. It just concerned me that the more regular players wouldn't be able to guess over the regulars, if that made sense?
/me slips away talking about something she's not involved in
Anyway, it doens't look like anyone's gonna fall out over it. That's the main thing.

MishMash:
I understand concerns regarding the playing of MishMash in the final. I would ask all finalists to consider what I initially wrote in the Poll Thread (http://www.isketchforum.net/showpost.php?p=77350&postcount=19) when the games were decided upon.
To reiterate, I received no objection, either publically or in PM about Mish Mash being included. I maintain that this is a fun way to end the Tournament.
With regards to the 'No Puns' - this is an acceptable and recognised drawing style of Mish Mash. As a drawer it shows that you can think laterally and logically and for a player, likewise. It is not intended to confuse - and I am sure that a player who chooses to draw this way (in a Final no less) would not use something obscure as they need all the points they can get!
Best of luck to all our finalists - you have now been PM'd and the Final will take place within the next few days (providing you lot get back to me!)
May I ask something? Will words be allowed in the mishmash part of the final? I just drew the word 'lotion' with a high 'tion' and a low 'tion'. Would that have been allowed in the final?

Nope...! No letters is the rule! Other than in Mish Mash when you advise the player's what type of style you are drawing.

Whether you're in the final or not, I think it's good to have a say! Us finalists don't mind at all; we'll ignore your comments, but nah we don't mind at all!!!!
But perhaps our fellow sketchers from across the pond don't like the idea of UK words but they knew from the outset that the games were set by public opinion! So let the games begin!!
Anyway, I'm happy with what's in the final. I'm not so happy with WHO is in the final but I'll have a go, I'll have a laugh and wherever I may come in the top 5, I really don't mind! I just hope I get a congratulatory email from Rob and an honorary "adminship" for getting to the final itself!
Thank you in anticipation, Rob!!
