I just thought to myself, ok we have arcade tornaments going on, but i cant keep asking 2.0 for tetris non stop.
So i thougt a weekly quiz would keep us all amused.
But ive only had to people enter so far, so maybe it wont last longer than one week lol.
I hope more of you enter, the questions are not so hard, GOOGLE it.
Also its only ever easy if you know the answer isnt it, most of us have to reasearch things.

Yes BM it seems your right, two out of the 4 of you have given the right answer so far.

Ok yet again we have four right answers from the tie break round.
So im going to pm another tie breaker to the four people,

Yes I think that time limits suck. Because Cherry could put the question on at 3pm UK time and I would probably already be in bed. Remember I am 9 hours ahead of you when it's your Summer and 11 hours ahead when it's your Winter. Besides which - it's a quiz and unlike iSketch - we don't all have to be there at the same time.
Just do it based on questions. Make it that HONOUR and INTEGRITY are mandatory and don't allow Googling.
I wouldn't feel right if I googled any of the answers. That's just cheating and there's not much worse than that.

So well done to mr BAD MANNERS
The question was, what is the highest score possible in a frame of snooker.
The correct answer was 151.
Cause you can get a 147 break, but if your opponent pots the white in off the break, you then get 4 points awarded to you makeing it a 151 break.
Many thanks to all those who took part, and our four finalists, FACEY, JEWELS,FLOPSY AND BAD MANNERS.

Can I be pedantic? Oh, I usually am so why change now?!!
Is it not possible to get a 153 - because if the snooker player was as bad as me, for instance, they might go to break, mis-cue, hit the pink, then the white goes in off! Therefore, technically, the white ball goes back up and having hit the pink (which is a 6 point ball) the foul points are 6.
Just thought I'd throw that one in!

Well, if we're including fouls, which I didn't (oh foolish me), the highest score possible is 155 where a re-spotted black ends the break.

Ok - If a player plays a foul stroke with all 15 reds still on the table, and snookers their opponent, the opponent may choose to hit any coloured ball as a free ball which is scored as a red. By potting that free ball and a colour, then all of the reds followed by blacks, then all six colours, the player can achieve a break of more than 147. If the free ball is followed by a black, and the player goes on to clear the table, the total score for the break is 155; this is the highest possible break in these circumstances.
There is a myth in snooker circles that a break of 162 is possible with fouls and a re-spotted black. BUT!!! even with this extremely unlikely combination, the highest break is still 155. This is because a re-spotted black ends the break and a coin is tossed to decide progress in the frame.
Next Quiz should be ready by the end of the week - will try to make it a little Google resistant and will ask that you e-mail rather than PM as my PM box is rather full.
Who spent his youth watching pot black and hanging around snooker rooms???????

Well i see that a 155 is possible, but i got my answer from the television this week.
Where snooker players were playing the world series at the crucible in sheffield.
The commentater stated the 151 score and i used it in this quiz as a tie break question.
I still feel that i have the right winner though, as flopsy answered 147 as did facey and so did jewels.
Bad Manners gave the correct answer that i had which was 151.
So he is the true winner, if someone would have iven he 155 answer and i was proved to be wrong then i would have overseen this and made that person the new winner.
I hope your all happy with this:razz:

Nope. No answers given away although yes - that's ONE way of looking at it. Someone already did something like that and therefore got an incorrect answer. They haven't complained, because they realised the mistake once I told them which question was incorrect.

Thanks kissy and yes you are quite correct. If the thing is spelled incorrectly the trivia site would knock you back as an incorrect answer. So I think I will have to go with that option - otherwise the Tie Break will blow out galore. There are already three people who have got 10/10 correct. I will post the correct answers and the names of the tied contestants on Wednesday.

I'm not like schools used to be when I was a kid (not so sure it's not still like that)- where they give kids exams and then tell them they got 75% but then don't tell them which bits they got wrong so they can actually know WTF they got right and what they need to re-learn correctly.
When I put the names up of those who got 10/10 I will also put up the answers and some notes and links to the questions people may have got wrong.
And when I said Google wasn't necessarily the trivia player's friend - that has just been made obvious - some people just can't spell correctly.

Well there aren't too many who would have got the Police Commissioner's name or Daryl Braithwate's band - and most likely not the stamp - without it.
It pays to live so far from the rest of the world, where we can have our own little culture in paradise and be relatively well ignored - until it comes to the important stuff like Cricket, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Swimming, Trivia, Beer.
Should I mark hard on spelling? Especially if it's a name?
Only if the name is Bob!
LOL - reminds me of a Cheech and Chong sketch - Lets Make a Dope Deal - Ok Bob - next question - What is your name? Starts with a B. Ends with a B......... Oh I know that one, Man. It's Bob, Man.
Oh and there's bragging rights for anyone who can tell me what the most popular beer is in Australia.

Same goes for Corona beer and Brahma beer. I'd think twice before i drink it, definately worst case scenario beers.
Americans: buy moosehead or if you can, sure beats the hell ouf of that wimpy 4% rocky mountain taste...
And yes, i know coors owns molson now, thus i will not say a word about it. Go independent, tastes better.

I think some may have Googled. Actually I KNOW some have Googled based on their replies - hence the misspellings which have eliminated some players.
As a regular online Trivia player - you don't get time to Google anything, so I rely on gut instinct - which doesn't always work too well for me in trivia - but for work it's been a blessing.

The correct answers - and YES I chose to mark for spelling - otherwise the tie breaker would be a huge one.
1. If I was an ecdysiast, what would I do for a living? A STRIPPER
2. Which country has a red flag with a green 5-pointed star called the Seal of Solomon? MOROCCO NB: Only one R in MOROCCO
3. Who was the first film star to feature on a postage stamp?
GRACE KELLY - Yes I know you are all saying, but the Grace Kelly stamp was released in 1993 and Charlie Chaplin came out on a stamp in the US in 1985. And it wasn't Marilyn Monroe or Greta Garbo either. This stamp:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b8/Gracekellystamp.jpg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Gracekellystamp.jpg) was released in Monaco in 1956 picturing her with Prince Rainier.
4. Who was the New South Wales Commissioner of Police immediately before Ken Moroney? Peter Ryan - Not Skippy The Bush Kangaroo - although many would argue Skippy could have done a better job.
5. Which breed of dog, known for rescue work, was originally bred in Trappist monasteries? St Bernard
6. What are the two bones of the lower arm known as? Radius and Ulna
7. Which Australian State was originally named in honour of the Governor General of the Dutch East Indies? Tasmania - Dutch explorer Abel Tasman was the first European to explore Tasmania. He named the island Anthoonij van Diemenslandt in honor of Anthony van Diemen, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies who had sent Tasman on his voyage of discovery in 1642.
8. Who wrote Sinead O'Connor's only real hit "Nothing Compares 2 U"? Prince
9. Apart from the inflatable aircraft escape slide, what other important piece of aircraft equipment was invented in Australia? NOT the Dolly Trolley, Turbojets or Distance Measuring Equipment - but The Black Box Flight Recorder.
10. Which band was Daryl Braithwaite the lead singer of? This one caught a few people out - SHERBET. I know you are screaming at the computer right now and saying BS that's what I wrote. Unfortunately some of you chose to write SHERBERT - which is not correct.
So to the TIE BREAKER - Kissy and 2.0

The question I posed was:

Name them."
To get this answer Google was NOT an option. Well done to 2.0 for naming all of my favourite Aussie Bands - but a slight misinterpretation of the question caused his downfall. - Must say that he was the first person to respond to the quiz and get 10/10 so kudos to him for that as well.

1. There are four surviving copies of this document, two in London, one in Lincoln and one in Salisbury. What is it, who signed it, and where?
My iSketch application, (lots of smudges and crossings out), by me, online.
2. If there are 12 inches to the foot and 3 feet to the yard, how many rods are there in a mile?
Depends how many anglers are fishing on that particular mile of river.
3. Name the four presidents carved into the mountain.
On the left, Denzel Washington
2nd from left is definetly a 60's/70's pop singer.
2nd from right, always reminds me of a 30's Stalin.
On the right, seems half finished, or needs a better haircut.
4. The game of cricket is based on another game which is still played in Sussex - what is that game called?
Marry your sister?
5. To the British a billion is 1,000,000,000,000, i.e. a million million, but in American English a billion is 1,000,000,000, i.e. only one thousand million. What single word means 'one thousand million'?
Bloodybig
6. There were originally twelve of them, now there are only three left and two of those are in the county where I live: who did they commemorate?
WM winning a game
7. American recipes often use cups as the unit of measurement which confuses the heck out of me so how many grammes in a cup of flour?
Depends how much your local dealer has cut it.
8. Must have been hard to catch up with this guy to take his photo... who is it?
Error - No joke found
9. After the Battle of Hastings, what was the first place in England visited by William the Conqueror?
The loo, the ferrys had no facilities and then he had a little fight to deal with.
10. Europe's oldest working clock dates from 1386. How many times has it ticked?
I think this has already been answered correctly by Ms(I'm not going to survive the Bank Holiday when TF catches me)Nerdy.

Sorry it's taken so long to post the scores... I have been out and about a lot since last Friday and never quite got my head around these clever people's clever answers to the questions!
Some of the answers were open to interpretation but mine's the interpretation that counts. It was a close run thing between the top three, Dinnae, kisskiss and Sierra so let me put them out of their misery with the answers:
Q1. There are four surviving copies of this document, two in London, one in Lincoln and one in Salisbury. What is it, who signed it, and where?
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/3849/helloxe6.jpg
It's the Magna Carta, 'signed' by King John at Runnymede. In those days, few people could write, so seals were very common and were as good as, often better than, signatures. The Magna Carta in the photo is the one at Salisbury Cathedral.
Q2. If there are 12 inches to the foot and 3 feet to the yard, how many rods are there in a mile?
320 rods to the mile (12 inches to the foot, 3 feet to the yard, five yards and one foot and six inches to the rod (also called the pole or perch), 4 rods (or poles or perches) to the chain, 10 chains to the furlong, and 8 furlongs to the mile).
Q3. Name the four presidents
http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/3990/presuw4.jpg
George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln
Q4. The game of cricket is based on another game which is still played in Sussex - what is that game called?
Stoolball
Q5. To the British a billion is 1,000,000,000,000, i.e. a million million, but in American English a billion is 1,000,000,000, i.e. only one thousand million. What single word means 'one thousand million'?
Milliard
Strangely the British don't use the word very much but it's very common in several other European languages.
Q6. There were originally twelve of them, now there are only three left and two of those are in the county where I live: who did they commemorate?
http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/3861/nicetryxe2.jpg
They are the Eleanor Crosses, commemorating Queen Eleanor of Castile (wife of King Edward I)
One of the original crosses was erected at Charing and the spot is accepted as the centre of London but the cross that stands there now is a reconstruction and not the original.
Q7. American recipes often use cups as the unit of measurement which confuses the heck out of me so how many grammes in a cup of flour?
There are different answers to this according to the type of flour and whether it was sifted or not, so I would have accepted any answer between 115g and 160g. Dinnae even worked out the mathematical formula using the specific gravity of flour... you learn something new every day. Note that a cup of sugar and a cup of flour (sifted or not) don't weigh the same.
Q8. Must have been hard to catch up with this guy to take his photo... who is it?
http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/5070/f1tkx9.jpg
Lewis Hamilton (Formula 1 Racing Driver)
Q9. After the Battle of Hastings, what was the first place in England visited by William the Conqueror?
Dover
Q10. Europe's oldest working clock dates from 1386. How many times has it ticked?
More than five million... there were a few years when the clock wasn't working so the exact answer isn't known. Although it has no face, the escapement (the cogs etc!) does make a noise in the same way as other mechanical clocks.
So, after all that... Sierra came third, Dinnae second, and kisskiss wins! It was VERY close though between kisskiss and Dinnae so well done and congratulations!
Damn stoolball :D
I really wanted to do the quiz this time. Wikipedia gave me my Wallingford answer for Q9, by the way. But it didn't clearly say that it was the first place he went to. I'm interested in reading your source (if it's not a memory from some book), 'cos I can't really find any detailed information on it myself.

I should disqualify all the entrants because the basic requirement this time around was to send me the answers on a banknote and no one did!
However, as there has to be a tie break there's still time...
First the answers:
1. What will Paul McCartney be entitled to on Monday 18 June 2007?
A. His State Pension ... he was 65 on Monday.
2. Sir Alan Sugar got rich largely because of the Amstrad PCW, a dedicated word processor. What was the PCW called in Germany?
A. Joyce
3. What does this flower have in common with Purdey and Patsy?
http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/5840/fuchsiapf7.jpg
A. This particular fuchsia was launched at this year's Chelsea Flower Show and was named after Joanna Lumley, who played Purdey in 'The Avengers' and Patsy in 'Absolutely Fabulous', both classic British television shows.
4. How long does Eris take to go round the sun?
A. 556.7 years
5. Name the Briton who has a city named after him in Singapore
A. Sir Stamford Raffles
6. When I went to live in Singapore, I was told that if I saw something which smelled like an open sewer there was no need to panic; indeed, instead of calling a plumber I might fetch a spoon. So what is this stinky fruit?
http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/7253/smellyfruitvs6.jpg
A. Durian - this fruit stinks so much it's not allowed on planes, in hotels or many other places with air-conditioning.
7. People have dug tunnels into this mound to find out who built it and when but so far without success. So what is this man-made mystery called?
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/8400/moundcp0.jpg
A. Silbury Hill
8. What did Coleridge have in common with David Harman?
A. Xanadu. Coleridge wrote a poem which begins "In Xanadu did Kubla Khan a stately pleasure dome decree". David Harman was/is also known as Dave Dee, of Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich who had a hit record with 'Legend of Xanadu'... which you can see here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ky3QiL5-4Eg) if you wish!
9. In 1665-66, lists were published every week in London with the names of people who had died in the Great Plague. What were the lists called?
A. Bills of Mortality
10. What word means a ravine, gutting a fish, and a measure of liquid?
A. Gill

2. Joseph Mallord William Turner. (The painting is called "The Fighting Temeraire")
3. England v. Argentina, 1986, Mexico City
Both Sierra and Vik got all three answers right so more tie break questions will be on their way shortly!

Hurry up and someone win, already! (that third one was especially tough, good job!)

Congrats again Vik!!! And thanks flopsy
What does everyone think, especially you Vik, of the two of us splitting the next quiz to 5 questions each if we tie again?
That's what crossed my mind too, good idea, and congrats :)
Nice qus so far, Flops

Or, we could get flopsy to disqualify you both for cheating and sharing answers and let the person who came in 3rd win and do the next quiz ;)
Heh, good luck again.
And have 10 volcano questions? Sounds fun, actually :P
This second tie-break was very hard. Flopsy, you are an evil bunny! Good luck Sierra, I hope you fared better than me this time round!
(btw, do you have a thing for Sir. McCartney or what? :P)

Rofl. You know me too well :P But, I'd only ask 9.. Question 10 would be:
(btw, do you have a thing for Sir. McCartney or what? :P)
What is the connection between flopsy and Paul McCartney? ;)

And the winner is...
The three questions in the second tiebreak were:
1. What fur(s) were sporrans traditionally made from?
A. Mainly Otter, seal, and badger... with a bit of ermine, rabbit, fox, beaver, and a few other creatures thrown in. It's illegal to use many of these furs nowadays as the animals are protected species.
2. London will host the Olympic Games in 2012; what unique Olympic distinction is held by the leader of the Organising Committee?
A. Sebastian Coe was the first man to win the 1500m in two successive Olympics - Moscow 1980 and Los Angeles 1984
3. What's the connection between Paul McCartney and cakes?
A. Paul's ex-fiancee, Jane Asher, has a cake-making company (http://www.jane-asher.co.uk/index.php)
As for me having a thing about Paul ... tsk!... but he did once hug me and tell me I was wonderful, so there!
I decided to be strict as this round needed a resolution so I knocked half a point off Sierra for saying that Paul McCartney's ex-fiancee was called Linda Asher (poor Jane - but she's not at all poor so let's not weep too much) but then I knocked a whole point off Vik for not only not getting the Seb Coe answer but also for making a derogatory remark about the whole Olympic voting process. It did make me laugh out loud but I'm keeping the comment to myself as 1) I don't want to cause an international incident and 2) We don't want to lose the Olympics now, they've already started to dig up a lot of London!
So, with a half-point advantage, I declare Sierra to be the winner!
Congratulations!
http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/5324/boxflowersgp4.gif
Have a Jane Asher cake!
And now it's Sierra's turn to set the questions... good luck!
Woohoo! Well done Sierra! I'm looking forward to your questions :)
EDIT: Oops about the Olympics qu - I assumed it was about the IOC! Bah at how much time I wasted trying to find out some snippet of info as to what distinguishes all the leaders of the IOC from us mere mortals XD

Thanks everyone! Congrats to Vik as a tough competitor and for managing to avoid coming up with a quiz.
LOL @ Linda Asher. My brain is googled to death. I'll do my best to come up with not too easy, not to hard questions. It might take me a while.
Thanks for the challenge flopsy, obviously a lot of work on your part.

Tasha, the questions I'm working on so far have no age advantages. From what I've seen so far, it's more of a matter of searching and patience. I didn't know the answers to any of the questions, I had to google all of them.

Funny you should mention that. I was helping BM Jnr research an assignment on Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War/Conflict/Military Action - whatever you choose to call it - and ended up reading so much about it that I found bits about HMAS Vampire - which is the ship my dear old former Police Rescue Sergeant served on when he was a much younger man (and I was just a baby). Who said the internet was full of ♥♥♥♥? Oh yes - that was me:twisted:

Ditto to the above. You can learn so much whilst helping out your children. My daughter did a fantastic 60's project recently... and I was just as engrossed as she was. She is now doing another History Project (The Titanic) and I am looking forward to finding out a bit more about that too!

Right, the mod team decided to move the Weekly Quiz to the games section instead. We felt the General Discussions was the wrong place to keep it, as it kept falling into the second page, due to the current busy forum. Also, we didn't feel the need to make it a sticky over there.
So, we've moved it here instead, and made it a sticky thread :) Get quizzing and good luck!:

For the past few days my ISP has been having outages that last for hours so I sometimes can't get on line at all or it goes out while I'm in the middle of doing stuff. grrrr.
I still have a few answers I need to confirm before I post the winner. I have an appointment today and I hope I still have internet connection when I get back so I can get on google.

flopsy!!!
Vik takes second place with Tigress very close by half a point.
1.) What does the most famous blue diamond in the world and an extract of the urine of a German alchemist have in common?
phosphorescence I've also accepted phosphorus
2.) In which US National Monument is the following formation found?
http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/9444/question2bip1.jpghttp://img224.imageshack.us/img224/260/question2alt2.jpg
Devils Postpile Sorry Vik, Devil's Tower Wyoming is a good guess but the two look much different.
3.) What's the most famous award that Bob Dylan has almost received? Be as specific as possible.
Nobel Prize for Literature He was nominated several times but many thought his work was not considered literature.
4.) They caught "westering fever" and headed West in 1846, but met with gruesome disaster in the mountains. Who were they?
The Donner Party Advised to take a "shortcut" which turned out to be very treacherous, they were delayed and caught in a bad snow storm in the Sierra Nevada Mountains leaving some resorting to cannibalism in efforts to survive.
5.) What do a house that was never completed and the most popular hunting rifle in history have in
common?
Sarah Winchester The heiress of Winchester Repeating Arms company. A medium told Sarah that the Winchester family was cursed by the spirits of all the people who had been killed by the Winchester rifle, and that she should move west and build a house for herself and the spirits. The medium also told Sarah that should construction ever stop on the house, she would die. The winchester Mystery house is in my home city.
6.) Who failed to succeed as a musician, was convinced to try acting by Nicolas Cage, and has something
in common with Disneyland?
Johnny Depp
7.) Which land mammal has the most teeth?
Giant Armadillo I also would have accepted the opossum as some google articles make this claim. I thought it was either the opossum or numbat until I dug further.
8.) What do Johnny Depp and the Apple Macintosh design team have in common?
Pirate Flag / Skull & Crossbones The original Macintosh design team flew a pirate flag over their designated building on the Apple campus. I've given flopsy half a point for her answer Miramar as Johnny Depp lived in Miramar Florida for some time and Miramar Systems, Inc., the leading provider of PC-to-Macintosh networking software.
9.) What did Jacques Cousteau and John Denver have in common with Twisted Metal?
Calypso John Denver wrote a song named Calypso in honor of Jacques Cousteau's boat The Calypso. Twisted Metal is a game with a character named Calypso.
10.) What is the constant in Albert Einstein's most famous equation?
C the speed of light in a vacuum

Congrats, Flopsy! Well done, again. :) I did so bad, Sierra. I'm Doofers' Doofus.. :( And I did Devil's tower at first, too. Quickly realised they both look waaaay too similar!
And did they make a movie about the Donner Party people? Because all that seemed really familiar to me. If it was that film, I remember it freaking me out a little when I was a kid..
Oh, and well done to Vik and Tigs too :)
OK, people!

Thanks for stepping into the breach, Vik... I appreciate it and know that you'll do a great job.
I should also say that I really liked Sierra's quiz even though it was very tough! I hadn't planned on doing it but once I realised quite how tough it was I refused to be beaten... and then once I'd started I just had to finish. So thanks a lot for stretching my brain and my googling powers, Sierra!
