Boys Vs. Girls Valentine Competition!
The Results
First of all, on behalf of Jen and myself can say a massive Thank You to everyone who has participated.
Secondly, I wish to thank the lovely JenJen for helping me make this competition. Thank You and massive hugs to JenJen :)
OK, here are the results.
Round 1
The boys beat the girls in this round.
Round 2
The girls beat the boys in this round.
Round 3
Since both teams have won one round each, this round was the decider.
In each section, the "Before Average" score was the actual score for the boys team. The "Boys TOTAL" score was the modified score to allow for the difference in team member numbers.
Wordsearch (6 boys and 9 girls entered this section)
The names listed below are the people who submitted the wordsearch before the deadline.

Questions (9 boys and 14 girls entered this section)
For each question the points were added to make a team total for that question. Each player has their associated scores. If a player is not listed for one question, they either answered incorrectly or didn't submit an answer before the deadline.

As was mentioned before, special mentions would go to the forumites who received the most points for their team.

And now, here comes the main result, the winning team...
Without further ado, the winner is...

Congratulations, boys team! Don't know how you did it but you did, so you deserve the win. Especially having fewer members. Great job!
Girls, our team effort was brilliant, and having more people meant we also had more chance of getting confused and being in complete disarray but we pulled through too and I thought our organization was pretty good :) Well done, team!
Good job also to Alessadri, Fox, and Vik. I think, looking at the scores for the Questions round, it was far more competitive between the girls than the boys x)
Thanks to jenni and db for organizing this competition - most of it was really fun XD I think my favourite part was the 'find the hearts' round and I'd do it again... not(!) Nah, really, my favourite round was the Questions round, because I learned some really interesting facts along the way :) So once again, thanks and good luck with the Easter comp db (can I please reiterate that I really hope there isn't any 'find the 30 eggs hidden around the forum' round).
Can't wait to see what the boys' prize is? Ooh, the suspense! :)

The organisation of both teams was brilliant, but the girls seemed to have a better strategy going on.
...good luck with the Easter comp db (can I please reiterate that I really hope there isn't any 'find the 30 eggs hidden around the forum' round).
Nope, there are 500 eggs to find

I wanna say thank you to jenjenhead and db for the competition. It was fun! I have to admit.. even finding the hearts was fun, lol. In a stressful way though :P Hehe. And I'm glad I joined it :)
Girl's team.. I love you guys. Our group was fun. I liked that we all got on so well (:
P.S. Boys still suck XD

db, when you were calculating the points for the Questions round, what number did you use as the number of players from the girls team?...

Congratulations to the boys team, and to everyone who joined the comp.
I don't understand the scoring system though for the questions.
For example, for Question 1, the total possible points are 120. The girls team got 75 of these and the boys team got 45, yet their final points are 70?
I would have thought that girls = 75/120 = 62.5 points and boys 45/120 = 37.5 points.
For question 2, there are 9 boys and 9 girls who entered, yet the boys, who got less actual points, ended up with a higher final score....
I'm sure it's all OK, cos I know Deebs works hard to ensure everything is fair, I just don't understand it. :embarrassed:

Saff the scoring system changed and to adjust for the boys having fewer members, it goes like this:
score = boys total score x (members in girls team/members in boys team)
so for the questions round, it looks like db has used 14 as the number of members in the girls team, and 9 for the boys team.
so for the boys, the calculation goes
45 x (14/9) = 69.99 (then rounded to 70)
But Lindt dropped out after Q1 and jenni said it was OK, so I think the total members for the girls team should actually be 13, and not 14, and her score for Q1 should be taken out.

Ah I see. Ty for explaining that. Makes sense to do it that way seeing as it's a team competition :)

You're welcome.
I just noticed that all 9 boys didn't enter Questions 1 (8 members), 3 (6 members) and 6 (5 members), yet the scoring is still the same (multiplying their score with 14/9). Doesn't this give them an advantage as they're getting points for members who didn't submit an answer either (as opposed to just not having enough members)?
Alessadri
15-02-2009, 03:24 AM
Q1 has 13 girls and 8 boys.. so you mean to say that it has to be averaged by a factor of 13/8 instead of 14/9. Probably, but it is not a disadvantage for you. 13/8 > 14/9.
Plus, the scoring is like iSketch, as db said. So if you "miss" a round, you get 0 points, because you are in the room. (If that makes sense)
storm
15-02-2009, 03:28 AM
I meant 13 not just for Q1 but all the questions, so 13/9.
Edit:
And yeah, the iSketch explanation does make sense.
Grats Boys team! Well done. =)
Well done, smelly boys.
*bitter*
lol - nah, was a good competition!!
BTW - one of the girl's sent their answer to ME for qu 6 of round 3... I just saw the PM, lol. Not sure what to do with that!

I see that there are a few questions floating around about the scoring.
I have used the the same multiplier (14/9) throughout to calculate the boys score for all 6 of the questions instead of having a variable multiplier depending on how many people played the question. I assumed that some people either didn't know the answer or didn't get on the forum in time to answer. The scoring is exactly the same as in iSketch, if you are participating and you don't guess, you will not score any points, but you will be included in the multiplier calculation.
However, I wasn't aware that Lindt had dropped out after question 1, so I could have removed her 5 points for question 1 as well as decreased the multiplier to 13/9.

Hmm.. right.. by my calculations that changes the scores to 686 to the boys and 670 to us.. although if you decide not to count bellis wordsearch.. >.> It brings the guys score down to 638... lol... >.> so yeah... >.> I think.. xD But yeah.. :) Well done guys. :) You all did amazing :D Mmm I can't wait till something this competitive comes up again.. xD rofl.. ahh.. :D

Hmm sorry to harp on about the scoring for this..
But the sum of the boys total for the wordsearch (272) and the questions (392) makes 664.. not 678..
I don't understand the averaging and shiz so maybe I'm just missing something, in which case ignore me!
