View Full Version : I just got a MacBook Pro

I got a MacBook Pro a couple of weeks ago (and I'm still not a "Mac person") and iSketch won't fully function on it. I have Shockwave 10 and I open my Internet browser (either Firefox or Safari) in Rosetta mode.
The thing is that iSketch loads correctly; I can log in; I can enter a room and chat and guess and draw; the tools and emotes work fine; but when I try to change my username or settings, the browser "quits unexpectedly."
I can't backspace or delete characters in the username or settings text fields. I can't use the space bar. I can't type numbers or letters. No matter what, when I type anything in a text field, the browser closes out. The good thing is that iSketch looks like it would on my family's PC and its speed is fine and I can draw OK with the mouse and use the controls well.
Could somebody please help me? I want to experience iSketch to its fullest on my MacBook. What should I do?
P.S. How do you backspace in iSketch using a MacBook? fn+delete won't work (usually that is the "backspace" shortcut like on a regular computer) so I don't know what else to try. Thanks.
Yikes, you have a number of problems. Most of them will go away if you somehow manage to find the full installer for shockwave 10. The slim gave me this exact same problem when i got the intel imac.
Dunno about the space/backspace issue, might also go away, let us know.

hey sketches i have the exact same computer (15 inch)....
i can give you the link for the shockwave that i downloaded...although shockwave doesn't seem to be the problem here...
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveDirector
that should come up as shockwave 10 for mac...
what do you mean backspacing?
p.s. ...sometimes i have your problem with the creating a new username thing...usually quitting safari and reopening it fixes the problem.
p.s.s. i find isketch to be better on safari (vs. firefox)
p.s.s.s. if you think that shockwave is the problem, i recommend using spotlight to make sure that there is not a single "shockwave 11" file on your computer...because that's given me some problems

I haven't played iSketch on my MBP since the really early days of Shockwave 11, before they prevented it from loading, and haven't gone back to 10 yet... but I might try downgrading this weekend to see how I go.

Are you asking purely from an iSketch point of view or Macs in general? The Delete key on a Macbook keyboard is actually Backspace as you would know it from a PC - cursor moves left back over what you've just typed. fn-Delete is equivalent to Delete on PC - keeps your cursor in place and sucks in the text to the right of it.
Edit: Just did an uninstall of 11, reinstall of 10, switched back to Rosetta mode and all is functioning perfectly. One thing I did was the "Reset Safari..." option on the main Safari menu. Another thing I do for iSketch/Shockwave is actually make a second copy of Safari (option/alt-drag the icon in Applications) purely for running in Rosetta mode. I leave the original icon as normal with Rosetta unticked so it runs full speed for everyday browsing, and only open up the second Rosetta-ticked icon if when I want to use iSketch. Can't be sure if these will make any difference to your situation, but may be worth a try.

Alright. How can I install Shockwave 10 -- NOT the "slim" version? spectre, thanks for the link, and I see that it's version 10.1.1.016 but it still shows up as Slim. I'm pretty sure that's what I already have.
For my MacBook -- I'm sorry I got mixed up -- in iSketch, my delete key only works as the Windows' version of "delete", as in, it only deletes characters to the right of the cursor. Steiny, can you tell me how I can normally "backspace" in iSketch?
You've all been a lot of help. Plus, I'm still getting used to a Mac!
google "adobe shockwave download alternates", the first result should be the adobe page where you can download the full shockwave 10 for mac. The link has been posted before on the forum.
Firefox doesn't work for me, it crashes after 5 min on isketch, safari doesn't.

/clap safari for playing isketch even though it lags a bit....

Afraid I can't sorry  the delete key on my MBP works as backspace everywhere across the OS, including iSketch. Something is definitely screwy if yours exhibits the "opposite" (i.e. forward delete) behaviour only in iSketch, but I'm at a loss to explain why.
And here's the direct link to the alternate installers if you haven't already googled it: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/

Thanks guys, after uninstalling and then installing again, I should now only have the full version of Shockwave 10; I used the "full installer." But it's giving me the same issue in both Safari and Firefox: it refuses to let me edit anything in the text fields (besides chatting).
When Safari crashed, I chose the option to "Reset and Relaunch" like I think Steiny pointed out, but I think that took it out of Rosetta mode that way. What else can I do?
By the way, could someone tell me what the Rosetta emulator does, anyway? Maybe that would help me understand it better. Thanks so much.
EDIT: After installing Shockwave 10 (full) and while in Safari, my delete key now works as a regular backspace key! :) But... that's the only thing that changed.

Re Rosetta: Macs used to be built with PowerPC processors made by IBM (G4, G5 etc.) but they've since been switched over to Intel Processors (Core Duo, Core 2 Duo) the same as in PCs. Because these processor chips are completely different in architecture, the code that the operating system and programs is written in is different for each processor type. Most Mac programs these days are written as "universal binaries" that contain both code types so they will run on either machine, automatically choosing the right code to match the hardware. To allow programs (including things like browser plugins) that were previously written for PowerPC to run on the newer Intel Macs, Apple created Rosetta as translation software built into the OS - converting PowerPC commands into the equivalent Intel commands on-the-fly as the program runs.
Shockwave 10 is PowerPC-only so it won't run natively on an Intel Mac. Safari is a universal binary these days, and ticking the Rosetta box in Get Info forces it to run the PowerPC code through the Rosetta translator instead of using the Intel code that it would normally do. It runs a bit slower because of the extra processing that's going on, but allows the old Shockwave 10 to work. Shockwave 11 is universal and I remember running iSketch on it without Rosetta shortly after it was released... but there must've been some other issues with it that led the iSketch powers to prevent it being used since.
Having said all that, I don't think the Reset and Relaunch after it crashes would take it out of Rosetta. If you have "Open using Rosetta" ticked in the Get Info of Safari, it should stay that way. Though that's not exactly what I meant by Reset either :P This is:

Wow, thanks! When I Reset Safari, should I leave all the boxes checked and reset everything?
Edit: Well, it probably doesn't matter, because I reset with all the boxes checked and Safari still opened using Rosetta... but the same problem is happening! Safari instantly quits when I type ANY key into the username and settings text fields. I can't type numbers, letters, shift, command-C or command-V or space or delete or any key at all.
But I can type anything into the password field and the chat lines.
Could there be another solution to this?
I'm out of ideas, i'm sure someone else is bound to suggest something new but may i suggest you contact feedback with your problem as well as keeping us posted here? They must surely have heard about this issue before.

Opera is the only Mac browser that works well for me. It also has to be in Rosetta emulation mode, with Shockwave 10 of course.
Opera did work for me as well when i first encountered the problem. Then i went to OS 10.5 and the problem went away as it was, bringing on a whole new and exciting set of weird crashing issues and password logging problems.

I will try Opera but if the problem continues, then I'll try to contact iSketch Feedback. For now I'll continue to play on my PC, but my MacBook is becoming my main computer, so it'd be great to have the ability to play iSketch without crashes on that.

I completely agree and I somewhat regret buying a Mac. I have a feeling I'll grow used to it, though.
I'm extremely disappointed that there is no customization in any of this interface or layout, though. I can't change the style of the windows. It's all the same and it's all boring. :(
The main reasons I bought a Mac was because of virtually no viruses... and great graphics. That's about it.

iSketch still isn't working. Something is wrong and it's probably because this is an Intel-based Mac and Shockwave 10 just probably isn't very compatible. The only problem at all with it is that it won't let me type my keys into the username and settings text fields. Yes, that's all, but it's annoying because I take it for granted and it always completely shuts down the browser.
I'll try the Feedback button, but otherwise, would you guys recommend that I call Apple, or would that make me sound like a pathetic loser who just wants to play a game?
