Hey!

I was quite bored, so I decided to post this for some strange reason.

Do any of you twist or pull your fingers and knuckles to make them 'crack' or 'pop' ?

The noise is so addictive!
What about you?

Haha, well I'm quite bored so I'm gonna reply :P

Yeah, I crack my knuckles.

But it's supposed to be really bad for your joints and apparently will cause arthritis in your old age  I can't help it though, sometimes your knuckles just feel *fresher* and more flexible once they're popped. And popping toe joints is even more satisfying...

Do I sound like a freak yet, hah. o.O I'll shush now.

Well, actually, my fellow knuckle-popper, apparently...actually, no. This article (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Is_cracking_your_knuckles_harmful) explains it nicely. No arthritis evidence, but there is soft tissue damange and weaker grip strength; on the positive side - more flexibility.

But if you want to rid yeself of this undignified habit, here you will find fellow poppers (http://www.43things.com/things/view/163908/stop-popping-my-knuckles) labouring towards the same goal.

I didn't even know that was possible! o.O Does that mean you have a double-jointed elbow?

I pop, no big deal. I once asked an orthopedic surgeon about the whole arthritis deal related to knuckle popping and he said it's not true. Haven't bothered researching any further. I can also pop my nose cartilage... freaks people out.

oh almost forgot, i can also pop shoulders, knees and ankles - every morning, toes, neck, most of my vertebrae, neck, and something in my shoulders.

Great topic. :)

Popping never hurts for me... I crack my knuckles every day. I guess it's just a habit. I crack my toe knuckles, too.

And my other joints (knees, wrists, neck, back, ankles, etc.) crack on their own...

Currently do knuckles, toes, elbow and wrists. Used to also do neck and back but don't anymore.

Aye, very lovely thread this! I do knuckles, toes and neck. Ankles do themselves, as do elbows, which are the only ones which hurt.

'Kay. So I'm going to sound REALLY nerdy here....
When one's knuckles "pop," the sound is caused by a rapid release of Carbon Dioxide. In your joints, you have a sort of soft "pocket" cushioning the bones that meet at the joint. HERE IS WHERE THE ARTHRITIS COMES IN: Arthritis is, in fact, a GOOD thing, first of all. Your body sends Calcium deposits to the site of "pocket" damage, thus preventing your bones from grinding against each other. It's not pleasant, but the bone grinding would be a helluva lot worse.
ANYWHO, when you pop your knuckles, (hey, I do it, too...) you are slowly causing damage to those precious cushions.
<3 ta!

Well in case of damage, not getting arthritis would be worse, yes, but not causing damage and thus not getting arthritis at all is better, by all means, so calling arthritis 'a good thing' is a bit misleading.

I pop my back, mostly. Just when it feels a little stiff. Some people seem to always be able to pop their fingers. Mine can only do it sometimes. I also absolutely hate the sound it makes; it gives me the shivers when somebody's popping all of his knuckles. Or worse: the neck! If you ever want to see me cringe, well, there you go...

 Please tell me I am not the only one who views this thread and feels just a little bit icky

I inadvertantly crack my fingers - I hate it when it happens as I can't stand the noise! I broke three of them many years ago and as time passes, they crack more and more

...and lol at the Tags on this thread - I am never going to eat Rice Krispies again without thinking of snapping, cracking and popping

I used to crack my knuckles when I was younger but not anymore. Now it hurts to do it. I also used to crack my toes but again not anymore. Not sure what made me stop, can't remember.
