What are the best websites for music downloads?
I used to get all mine off allofmp3.com but that's gone now.
Help please?

My preferred website is iTunes (http://www.apple.com/uk/itunes/), but of course you have to pay for it.

Don't use limewire - It's most likely illegal and it ♥♥♥♥ed up my computer 3 times :( had to get a new one each time :/

Hmmm.. interesting that you say that. When Mr TF tried to download a movie from there once, he managed to get the PC infected with a multitude of viruses etc - this was before we had adequate virus protection. After a reinstall and clean up - and also getting the necessary protection, we have never had any problems since.

Apparently there is LimeWire Pro which increases your download speed significatntly - but you have to pay for it. He now gets a download connectivity status of "Turbo-Charged". he used their own programme to download their upgrades.

Essentially though Limewire and Grokster, Napster, BitTorrent etc are all "peer-to-peer" software tools and should not be used as your lawful means of obtaining music, as it's very much under debate as to whether copying the files onto your computer and then to your MP3 player constitutes piracy.

I would be very careful about downloading anything that is "free". Little in life is truly free.

As far as legality issues... just ask this college student about her settlement fees for music downloads-- $3000 US dollars! http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18644781

I feel I need to elaborate  As stated in my first post, my preferred (and usual) site is iTunes - and yes, you have to pay for it.

As BM rightly states - the jury is out as to whether downloading to your computer and then onto your MP3 could be piracy - and with that in mind, I will continue to use iTunes.

Napster is legal. Now has support of many music bods and they charge a monthly fee for the privilege of participating. It works out at about £10GBP a month I think, which if you download more than 15 a month works out much better value than iTunes.

The copying files bit - If you obtain the file without paying for it, then in most cases that's going to be piracy, isn't it? :S

And remember to keep this thread within legal advice, guys. Save us from editing/deleting, heh. No illegal links, please. :) (tip for anyone posting later)

Oh, and TF.. iTunes is great because the Apple team are behind it :D See how I have to fit that in?

Torrents are not illegal.
Nor is the software for using them.

But just for safety's sake its probably best not to promote methods which are so easily used for piracy - even in some cases unwittingly. When you think things are free and can just download anything, where do you check for a copyright? Ignorance of the law is never an excuse if you get caught.

Ps. I didn't intend to delete your whole post completely, but I had a spasm.

My post was purely just a reminder for when people want to share sources of downloading music (not necessarily that yours was "illegal") :) Better to be safe. Cheers Ches for clarifying your reasons.

Did I mention that iTunes is great? lol. (saving myself from spam ;))

It's most likely illegal

Not in all cases. On the odd chance you can find music that has a free license. And i have tons of friends that are in various bands and distribute their music on the web free of charge, i download that too. Indie rock does not necessarily suck, though it mostly does.

And limewire is perfectly safe to use IF you know what you're dealing with. It's like a box full of bees, if you don't know how to handle it, don't stick your hand in it.
