Okay so I felt like starting a thread.. because after being here for over a year the only one I ever have was an intro thread - so that hardly counts! I did a bit of fishing around but couldn't find any good threads on the topic (that weren't years old anyway) so here goes it -
Post away your album and gig reviews, complimentary or otherwise! Also recommend artists that you think other members may like. Feel free to include links and vids of songs too :)
I'll let you guys get the ball rolling.

Good idea for a thread, Medea!
One song that I've been pretty much addicted to for quite a while is St. Vincent's "Actor out of Work"
<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/AZW9NYX6JZA&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/AZW9NYX6JZA&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>
I did a lyrical analysis on it for one of my classes, and bought the album in the process...I haven't had a chance to give it a good listen, but it's pretty dynamic. This video is brilliant, in any case!
Here, I got that album a bit ago, Casta. There a few alright tracks on it. :)
Umm, here's a few recommendations and that... first one from 80's dream pop band Lowlife, from the album Permanent Sleep.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/oClURvPKM38&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/oClURvPKM38&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
I'd never even heard of them until fairly recently, I don't think. I'm unsure as to how popular they ever were but thought that they were worth recommendation.
And this is from the Fall Be Kind EP:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WSmuzEzeAeY&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WSmuzEzeAeY&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Umm, I can't think of an album to review at the moment. Maybe in a bit.

What Would I Want? Sky is soooo good, maybe my favourite song last year! (I can't wait for Panda Bear's new albummmmmmmmmomg)
Some new stuff I've been listening too lately...
Beach House - Teen Dream: This is a really nice, beautiful album. It's kinda dream pop stuff, sort of slow paced but they've definetly fleshed out their sound from the first two albums they made... 9/10! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ElJ9uXZmM0
These New Puritans - Hidden: This album has quite a unique sound I think, it's mostly drum lead with a few synths and woodwinds through out. I think it's kinda exciting art-rock listening, really enjoy it. 8/10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIfKqgWPVvk
Toro Y Moi - Causers of This: Chillwave is probs dead now but this is a cool album, it's lo-fi-ish bedroom made pop. funnn 7/10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C08ucWQ6tCo

Oooh I really like that song Actor Out Of Work, Casta. I can't quite get into Animal Collective, a bit slow and long for me but I will have to give it some more listens. Still listening to your songs gt, These New Puritans sound very tribal I like it heh.
On a side note - did any Aussies catch the Hottest 100 yesterday? It's the top 100 songs of last year as voted by the public on triple j, a radio station in Aus. I don't quite agree with all the choices, but a very quality collection of music in any case. You can view the whole countdown here (http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/hottest100/09/countdown/cd_list.htm). Would also be interesting if people posted their top 10 of 2009? Just another thought :)
Here are some recommendations of my own -
Passion Pit - Manners
This a fantastic album, so much fun and really upbeat. I suck at putting artists into genres but I guess you might describe this as alt/indie pop, electronica, or something like that. Latest single Little Secrets is really catchy but my favourite song on the album would have to be Sleepyhead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bfseWNmlds).
5/5
Angus & Julia Stone - A Book Like This
I didn't think I'd really like this album when I bought it, it's a bit more folk/blues than I'd usually go for but I've found myself listening to it a lot. It's a really easy listen, such beautiful soft melodies and amazing vocals. Not perfect, I still skip a few songs but a good listen overall.
4/5
Here's Angus & Julia Stone's latest single, And The Boys, which is on their new EP of the same name.
<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RUDc1frz22E&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RUDc1frz22E&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>
Got a few albums the other day and I rather like this one: Gonjasufi's debut album A Sufi And A Killer. The song below is Sheep.
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/QpFPcUwqZW4&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/QpFPcUwqZW4&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Nice song, he has a similar sound to some of Devendra Banhart's earlier songs. If you don't know many of them, you might like to listen to a few.
Yeah, I have some of Devendra Banhart's albums and yeah I agree. :) I really like some of his slightly older stuff.
Even though anybody who wants to hear this probably has already, here's a track from Plastic Beach, the new Gorillaz album:
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZEhUsdaTavw&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZEhUsdaTavw&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

I have the Gonjasufi album too, I haven't listened to it loads yet but I like it so far. It's very diverse and anything Flying Lotus produces is bound to be good!
I like the Gorillaz song too and the album. Bobby Womack can really sing.
I just got to hear Caribou's new album Swim, it's pretty good I think...
<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/aiSa7THgxrI&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/aiSa7THgxrI&hl=en_GB&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
Also Ariel Pink's new song is getting a lot of hype but I'm not sure if it's on the right side of kitsch but it is catchy... Not sure what's going on in the picture either >_>
<object width="320" height="25"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/wiLqAu4s-_s&hl=en_GB&fs=1&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/wiLqAu4s-_s&hl=en_GB&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="320" height="25"></embed></object>
And I really love Joanna Newsom's album Have One On Me though I'm a complete fan boyyy who is willing to sit through two hours of music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuMsDbUmyM8). I don't think anybody else makes music like she does, she's other worldy.
Ahah, yeahh I sat and listened to Have One On Me start to finish, too. Really enjoyed it, perhaps not quite as much as I did her album Ys, which was just amazing, but still.
I hadn't heard Ariel Pink's new track but yeah it's quite catchy... and I will probably try Caribou's Swim, I rather like that track that you posted.

I came across a compilation of old Persian funk music today called Pomegranates, it's interesting. I like all the weird noises the guy makes on this song. Really not something I expected to like either.

This song is from one of my favourite albums ever (No Age: Nouns) and it's especially good during Spring, at least I think so anyway.

I think you people should check out COG, they sing some political songs & some songs about everyday living. Way better than some of the pathetic bands you see on MTV singing about emotional heartache, death, sorrow etc with lyrics like: "OH WAH MY GIRLFRIEND DUMPED ME!"
Anyway, make sure your speakers on maximum, cheers.

Haven't posted here in a bit, here's a few things that I've heard and liked recently. Embedding from YouTube still doesn't seem to be working... gone with Grooveshark for better sound quality.
From Matthew Dear's new album "Black City".

And this from Sufjan Stevens' new EP "All Delighted People".

iii have both of those too, Fox. You put my favourite songs from both as well! Sufjan is so nice, first he puts out a cheap and good EP then announces an album. It's supposed to be all electronicy though so it will be fun to see how that turns out.
I likeee Women's new album Public Strain...

Yeahh I'm looking forward to hearing the new Sufjan album too. I hadn't heard your link before, it was rather nice.

I don't know if it was just me who listened to those songs of Charlottes, but they sounded like a japanese version of Take That! :P
Not sure whether this is the type of music anyone on here might be into as some people find this band quite moany, but I've been listening to it non stop since monday when I bought it!

I love OK Go!! This video is so awesome!
Whenever my friend and I went to the gym we would try and do some of the treadmill moves they use in "Here It Goes Again" haha
Heard this song for the first time in a while today, I've always loved it:

New EP out this Friday! Why they don't have a full length album yet is beyond me. They're pretty rad live too, even if I couldn't understand a word Hayley was singing when I saw them eheh.
I can't resist posting this as well, this performance is unbelievable. Tegan and Sara perform The Ocean at Polaris. Beautiful acoustic version with Owen Pallett, inspiring!
