This thread is gonna be used to discuss things you've seen in the news recently. Everything from the war in Iraq.....to Britney's new hair do!!

So....i've been following the latest SKy vs Virgin Media story. Virgin Customers have lost rights to some Sky channels including Sky One....meaning no more new episodes of Lost and 24!
I think it's a silly argument...Don't see why Sky have not allowed their channels to be broadcast on Virgin media. Surely that means that they've lost millions of viewers now?
Not only that but it also means that Lost and 24 have lost many viewers too!

I heard about that too on the radio this morning. Seems that because of their petty differences, subscribers are the ones to lose out. Personally, I am unaffected, but I can assure you that if I was - I would be jumping up and down in a rage and yelling obscenities like a fish wife!!

Stupid people everywhere...

http://tirol.orf.at/stories/154116/

Essentially:

(28 November 2006, Hall in Tirol, Austria) A man reported missing was found the following morning in a trash compactor, the victim of a self-induced industrial accident. At first, the circumstances surrounding the 48-year-old man's death were hazy. But once the videotape from a monitoring camera was reviewed, all became clear.

The man, who worked for a parcel delivery service, had loaded the hydraulic press with empty boxes and started it up. At that point, the long-time employee walked to the edge of the charging (filling) hole, and used his foot to press the boxes further into the hydraulic trash compactor.

His foot was was seized by the press, and he was drawn into the chamber and crushed. He was not discovered until his colleagues needed to use the press again the next day.

My Grandma might possibly challenge that title. She's just turned 99 and still lives in a first floor flat on her own.

She's an inspiration, an absolute wonderful woman, and can still recall her childhood of when she used to live in a road not far from Bristol Rovers ground and how she used to sit on her doorstep and listen to the crowd cheering! Little stories like those are so interesting to hear from somebody who has lived for so long and can still have a good conversation!

Having said that, she is still extremely naughty! She tried having a play-fight with my 16 year old son: Imagine this, she is 4'6" and he is 5'11" - she starts throwing "punches" at him and then turning to me and giggling!!

On March 4 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_4), 2007 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007), a privately owned Veyron lost control in the wet and was involved in a road crash with a Vauxhall Astra van in Chesterfield, Surrey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surrey), England. A pregnant woman in the van was not injured, but was taken to hospital as a precaution and released; no other injuries were recorded. The crash occurred in heavy rain and the Veyron driver was reported by police for driving without due care and attention.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugatti_Veyron#_note-1)

TRUE news story. NOT a joke.
A lawyer in Charlotte, NC purchased a box of very rare and expensive cigars, then insured them against fire among other things. Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars and without yet having made even his first premium payment on the policy, the lawyer filed a claim with the insurance company.

In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were lost "in a series of small fires." The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason: that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion. The lawyer sued....and won! In delivering the ruling the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was frivolous. The judge stated nevertheless, that the lawyer held a policy from the company in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be "unacceptable fire," and was obligated to pay the claim. Rather than endure lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid $15,000.00 to the lawyer for his loss of the rare cigars lost in the "fires."

But... After the lawyer cashed the check, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of ARSON! With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case used against him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and was sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000.00 fine.

Warning over roadwork sign thefts
More than 130 road signs have been stolen from roadworks in Devon and Cornwall within the past 10 days.
The thefts have taken place along the A30 and A38. Temporary signs at roadworks were taken and permanent signs unbolted from posts and frames.

A Highways Agency spokesman urged motorists to take extra care while driving on the A30 and A38 as relevant information signs could be gone.

He warned that a lack of signs was a risk to drivers and workers.

The public have been asked to help by reporting any unusual or suspicious night-time activity around road signs to the police as soon as possible.

Aww Facey! Thanks for your concern!! As luck would have it (or sod's law), I missed the earth move for me (I don't recall it ever has anyway ) as we were en-route to Chessington World of Adventures at the exact time the quake hit. When we heard it on the news shortly after 8:15, I was obviously concerned as I know a lot of people in that area and news was a bit sketchy (and alarmist - as the media like to hype things up). A few 'phone call's put my mind at rest - but the tremors were felt in our area.

When we got home last night, it was apparent that we would have felt it had we been here as birthday card's of my daughter had fallen off the mantelpiece and a few other things had moved - nothing major and no obvious signs of damage.

Mr. TF was shocked to discover that his dirty old socks and clothing had managed to fall out of the linen basket and his car magazines were strewn over his side of the bed.... until I reminded the daft sod that that was how he left it  Men.... will try and find an excuse for anything

Tony Blair has announced he is standing down as Labour leader after a decade in Downing Street, paving the way for Gordon Brown to succeed him as Prime Minister.

He first told his Cabinet colleagues of his intentions at their regular Thursday morning meeting at No 10. Mr Brown was said to have paid a "fulsome tribute" to the Prime Minister at a meeting lasting little over 15 minutes.

Mr Blair then travelled to the Trimdon Labour Club in his Sedgefield constituency, County Durham to make a public pronouncement that he is standing down on 27 June.

My thoughts for today, are with little maddie.
The little girl who went missing in portugal,
How can parents of such young childern leave them in a hotel room while they go to dinner, not only was they left the parents went out of the hotel complex to eat.
It breaks my heart, kids have a tough job being safely brought in to adulthood these days without careless parents.
What the hell happend here, im watching the news all the time for the latest news on this story, im so upset and angry over it.
The children were 5,, 3,,, and a baby oh my god WHY leave them alone.http://www.isketchforum.net/images/smilies/main/icon_cry.gif http://www.isketchforum.net/images/smilies/main/icon_cry.gif http://www.isketchforum.net/images/smilies/main/icon_cry.gif

I am obsessed with the whole thing, Is that the price of their child's safety, a meal out?? Bah!
The sad thing is you need a licence to keep a dog but any fool can have a child! If these people had been "vicky pollard" like people the press and police would have been on their case for neglect, but as they both well paid educated doctors nobody likes to mention it. I do however, feel sad for them because we all make mistakes at parenting, God knows it's a tough job with no training, but they really would have known better. PETALUMA, Calif. (AP) - Elwood, a 2-year-old Chinese Crested and Chihuahua mix, was crowned the world's ugliest dog Friday, a distinction that delighted the New Jersey mutt's owners.

Elwood, dark colored and hairless—save for a mohawk-like puff of white fur on his head—is often referred to as "Yoda," or "ET," for his resemblance to those famous science fiction characters.

"I think he's the cutest thing that ever lived," said Elwood's owner, Karen Quigley, a resident of Sewell, New Jersey.

Quigley brought Elwood out to compete for the second year at the annual ugly dog contest at the Marin-Sonoma County Fair. Elwood placed second last year.

Most of the competing canines were also Chinese Crested, a breed that features a mohawk, bug eyes and a long, wagging tongue.

Quigley said she rescued Elwood two years ago. "The breeder was going to euthanize him because she thought he was too ugly to sell," said Quigley.

"So ha ha, now Elwood's all over the Internet and people love him and adore him."

Beyond the regal title of ugliest dog, Elwood also earned a $1,000 reward for his owner.

One dead, and flooding expected to worsen

Motorists are being urged to drive with care

Major rescue operations have been taking place all over the country, as hundreds of workers and motorists have been cut off by floodwater, while earlier a man trapped in a drain in Hull was pronounced dead after a lengthy rescue operation.

The victim, thought to be in his 20s, was up to his neck in water after his foot got stuck as he helped clear out the drain.

The former industrial heartland of Sheffield was submerged under several feet of water as the River Don burst its banks and the drainage system failed with the unprecedented rainfall. There were reports that several walls and buildings had collapsed because of the water.

Emergency services also evacuated 200 people from the Winn Gardens area of the city. A police spokesman said they were taken to Tapton School and All Saints School.

Meanwhile, police were urging people stranded in the city centre to make their way to the Winter Gardens where they will be directed. Police were also investigating reports that a young teenager had been swept away by the rising River Sheaf in the Millhouses Park area of Sheffield. He was reported to have been swept away at about 5.15pm near a playground area. The force helicopter was being used in the operation and officers were searching the banking.

In Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, many were evacuated from their homes as the storms hit central and northern areas of the East Midlands, causing flash flooding.

An emergency centre was set up as around 100 people were evacuated in Lowdham, Notts, when torrents of water poured down the town's streets. And 60-70 properties were evacuated in Louth, Lincolnshire, with a local town hall set up as an emergency centre for residents as flood sirens were sounded in the area, said police.

I was working in Sheffield yesterday. Quite weird. It was like a war zone, what whith the ambulances, fire engines and sea king helicopters! They were people wandering about not being able to get home. I stayed in the office till gone 7, but then had a relatively easy commute (only took an hour and twenty instead of the usual hour).

Girl dies on Disneyland Paris

French police are investigating the death of a 14-year-old Spanish girl who lost consciousness while riding a roller coaster at Disneyland Paris.

The cause of the girl's death remained unclear. A preliminary inspection of the Rock'n'Roller Coaster ride found no malfunctions with the machinery, Disneyland spokesman Pieter Boterman said.

Boterman said the girl boarded the ride on Monday at the theme park in Marne-la-Vallee east of the French capital, and when the ride stopped, her friends found her unconscious.

Medical teams at the theme park tried to revive her, but by the time the ambulance arrived, the girl had died, he said.

Police opened an investigation, and a post-mortem will be held, he said.

Disneyland authorities immediately shut down the ride, and it remained closed on Tuesday.

Boterman said the park was waiting to hear the cause of the girl's death before determining whether to reopen it.

The ride is at Walt Disney Studios Park, one of two theme parks at Disneyland Resort Paris.

Edit: I wonder if the poor girl had an underlying health condition, or are these rides getting too much for the human body to handle.

TRAGEDY IN GLASGOW...

A major hurricane (Senga) and an earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit Glasgow in the early hours of yesterday with its epicentre in The Gorbals.

Victims were seen wandering around aimlessly, muttering "Pure mental, man-no?".

The hurricane decimated the area causing approximately £30 worth of damage. Several priceless collections of mementos from Majorca and Seville were damaged beyond repair.

Three areas of historic burnt out cars were disturbed. Many locals were woken well before their giros arrived.

Clyde FM reported that hundreds of residents were confused and bewildered and were still trying to come to terms with the fact that something interesting had happened in The Gorbals.

One resident - Bernadette O'Reilly, a 15-year-old mother of 5 said "It gied me a pure fright so'n it did. My little Chardonnay-Mercedes came running into my bedroom greetin'. My youngest two, Tyler-Morgan and Megan-Storm slept through it all. Ah wiz still shaking when I was watching Trisha the next morning, so'n ah wiz."

Apparently though, looting, muggings and car crime were unaffected and carried on as normal.

The British Red Cross has so far managed to ship 4,000 crates of Buckfast to the area to help the stricken locals. Rescue workers are still searching through the rubble and have found large quantities of personal belongings, including benefit books and Bone China from Poundstretchers.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?
This appeal is to raise money for food and clothing parcels for
those unfortunate enough to be caught up in this disaster. Clothing is most sought after - items most needed include:
-- Fila or Burberry baseball caps
-- Kappa tracksuit tops (his and hers)
-- Shell suits (female)
-- White sport socks
-- Rockport boots or Adidas trainers

Food parcels may be harder to come by, but are needed all the same.
Required foodstuffs include:
-- Microwave chips
-- Pies from Greggs
-- Tins of baked beans
-- Ice cream
-- Cans of Special Brew or bottle of Buckie
22p buys a biro for filling in the compensation forms
£2 buys chips, crisps and Irn Bru for a family of 9
£5 will pay for a packet of B&H and a lighter to calm the nerves of
those affected.

Spanish police have arrested an Italian man and a Portuguese woman with possible links to the case of Madeleine McCann, the four-year-old who vanished nearly two months ago during a holiday in Portugal.

It was not clear, however, if the two were suspected of having a role in the girl's disappearance.

Spanish television news reports said the man may have tried to extort money from McCann's parents, offering them information about their daughter's whereabouts, though police did not confirm that.

The man was detained on an international arrest warrant originating in France, a police spokeswoman said. The warrant itself had nothing to do with the McCann case, but she would not elaborate or say what made police suspect him in the missing girl case, she added.

The woman was detained due to her association with the man, and there was no warrant for her arrest, the spokeswoman said. She did not identify either suspect by name, saying the investigation was ongoing.

The man and woman were both arrested on Friday morning in Sotogrande, a town in the southern Spanish province of Cadiz, the spokeswoman said.

Members of the McCann family in Britain said they were withholding comment until more information was known. "We have no comment to make, because we know no more than we have seen on the news," said John McCann, brother of Madeleine's father, Gerry.

Madeleine disappeared on May 3 after her parents left her and her brother and sister, two-year-old twins, alone in their room while they went to a restaurant inside their hotel complex in Praia da Luz, a tiny resort town in Portugal's Algarve region.

Italian Foreign Ministry officials later said local Spanish authorities had told Italian diplomats in Spain the man had no connection with Madeleine's disappearance. The officials declined to elaborate on why the man was detained.

Portuguese police confirmed in Lisbon that two Portuguese detectives had taken part in the arrests. "We thought they might be involved in the Madeleine case. It is a possibility, but we have found no concrete evidence yet," Inspector Olegario Sousa said. He declined to provide further details.

Car bomb found in central London

The threat of terror has returned to London after a car bomb was found in the heart of the capital.

Bomb squad officers defused the "potentially viable" device after police investigated reports of a suspicious vehicle in the early hours.

One police source said the bomb posed a real and substantial threat to the surrounding area, just yards from Piccadilly Circus, adding: "The indications that we have got so far are that it was certainly a big device."

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said the incident was a reminder that Britain faced "a serious and continuous threat'' and the public "needed to be alert'' at all times.

Mother donates frozen eggs to young daughter

The first mother-to-daughter egg donation has been announced by doctors.

If the Canadian girl, now aged seven, ever uses the eggs to have a baby, she would effectively be giving birth to her own sister.

Flavie Boivin, from Montreal, was born with Turner's syndrome (TS), a genetic condition that causes impaired growth and learning difficulties. TS also destroys eggs, leading to an unusually early menopause.

A patient's fertility can be preserved by freezing her ovarian tissue or eggs before the disease progresses. However, this carries a high risk of miscarriage or babies being born with genetic abnormalities.

Another option is egg donation, often by a second-degree relative such as a cousin or aunt. In Flavie's case, her mother stepped in to help her daughter by making a gift of her eggs - the first time this has ever happened.

Third foot-and-mouth case suspected

A developing disease situation, says Chief Veterinary Officer Debby ReynoldsHopes of containing the foot-and-mouth outbreak have been dealt a blow after a new suspected case of the virulent virus was discovered in Surrey.

A 3km temporary control zone has been set up around undisclosed premises to the west of Dorking, outside the existing surveillance area.

The decision was taken after an "inconclusive assessment" of clinical symptoms in cattle, said the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Chief Veterinary Officer Debby Reynolds said: "This is a developing disease situation."

She continued: "The containment and eradication of foot-and-mouth disease remains our priority. This is why we have moved swiftly to put in place a temporary control zone while we investigate this development.

"At this stage disease has not been confirmed, laboratory results will follow."

Ms Reynolds added: "It's a clinical suspicion and as a precaution we're putting in a temporary control zone, three kilometre radius around the farm."

The new zone is close to the two confirmed cases of the disease.

In the original outbreaks the infected cattle had been grazing at two sites in the village of Normandy, near Guildford, which is close to a research facility in Pirbright, Surrey.

Investigations into the cause of the outbreak have focused on this establishment as the laboratory is shared between the Institute for Animal Health, a diagnostic and research centre, and the pharmaceutical company Merial Animal Health, whose work includes manufacturing vaccines.

Goat crowned king of Ireland at fair

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Jimmy, a feisty white mountain goat, was crowned king of Ireland on Friday at one of the country's oldest fairs.

Dating back centuries, the Puck Fair is an annual festival of drinking, music and dancing celebrated in the town of Killorglin in southern Ireland.

Each year a male goat is caught in the surrounding mountains, paraded through the town to a beat of drums and pipes, and then placed in a 40-feet (12 metre) stand where he reigns as king for three days.

The origins of the fair are not totally known, but it always falls on August 10-12.

One theory suggests mountain goats alerted residents of the town to an impending attack by leader Oliver Cromwell's forces in the 17th century.

Another says it may have pre-Christian links due to the goat being a pagan fertility symbol like the god Pan.

"Its origins go way back to the mists of time," the fair's financial controller Declan Falvey told Reuters. "There is a mingling of fact and fantasy."

Around 100,000 to 150,000 visitors are expected to attend this year.

Falvey said precautions had been taken at the event, which also features separate horse and cattle fairs, due to a foot and mouth outbreak in England with disinfectant used, and mats placed wherever there were animals.

Jimmy himself will receive regal treatment, being fed regularly and checked by his own personal vet.

"At the end of 3 days, when he is dethroned, he is brought back up to the mountains and released to join his fellow nanny goats to resume his pastoral duties," said Falvey.

So, who's going to the meet?!:biggrin:

Traces of blood 'not Madeleine's'

Press Assoc. - Wednesday, August 15 11:47 pm

Blood traces found in the bedroom where Madeleine McCann was sleeping the night she was snatched were not hers, it has been reported.

A newspaper report says forensic results show the blood came from a man.

The results, printed in The Times, come at the end of a fortnight in which speculation has been rife that the little girl was murdered in the Praia da Luz apartment.

There have been numerous reports in the Portuguese media quoting anonymous police sources as saying detectives believe Madeleine died in the apartment the night she went missing.

The technical analysis of the tiny spots of blood found smeared on the bedroom wall show it probably comes from the "northeast European sub group", the British newspaper said.

The news does not come as a shock given that police suspected the blood came from a male guest who hurt himself while staying at the flat after Madeleine disappeared.

It gives fresh hope to the McCanns, who still believe their daughter is alive 105 days after she vanished while they ate dinner at a nearby restaurant.

If the blood belonged to the male guest, it explains why the traces were not initially found by Portuguese officers who scoured the flat after Madeleine's disappearance.

Detectives may soon name new official suspects in the case, it has been reported.

Chief Inspector Olegario Sousa is said to have not ruled out the possibility that friends of the family, from Rothley, Leicestershire, could be connected to Madeleine's disappearance.

I give thanks that the blood wasn't that little sweethearts.

But whatever, I really don't like him. Happy to see him behind bars. Even if he didn't commit the murders, he didn't have to taunt the Goldman and Brown Family by writing "If I Did It." The parents of a 15-year-old girl who disappeared following a family row has spoken of their heartbreak after their daughter's body was found hanging from a tree in remote woodland.

Rosemary Edwards had been grounded by her parents and told she was banned from riding for lying over how she lost a part-time job in a shop.

The teenager, from Dibden Purlieu, Hants, stormed off to her room following the tiff three weeks ago. The following day, she had vanished.

advertisementHer body was found by dog walkers at around 4.30pm on Sunday in a secluded area of the New Forest near Bartley - 10 miles from her home.

The schoolgirl's father, David, wept as he described the impact of their loss.

The 52-year-old said: "We are all feeling completely shell-shocked. Rosemary touched so many people's lives and it seems impossible to believe that she was so low that she felt life wasn't worth living."

Mr Edwards, a computer programmer, was the last to see Rosemary on September 4, when he went to her bedroom to say goodnight.

The following morning, when he went to check that she was getting up for her first day back at school, he found her bed empty.

Writing on a local newspaper forum just before Rosemary's body was discovered, Mr Edwards spoke of his anguish that he had not made up with his daughter.

He said: "I said goodnight and asked her for a hug. She refused, but I gave her a kiss on the cheek. I wish I'd said how much I loved her, but how many other parents do this constantly just in case it could be the last time you see your son or daughter?"

He also revealed how he and his wife had been shocked that Rosemary had lied over losing her Saturday job.

"Rosemary told us she had left her part-time job, but we later found out that she had been sacked for a minor transgression which shocked her employer and us because it was so totally out of character," he said.

"As parents, we didn't want this to be the start of Rosemary 'going off the rails', so we imposed a short ban on accessing the internet and a longer ban on horseriding.

"We now know from the internet trail on her computer, and from text messages on her phone, that she was going through some kind of torment in her head but at the same time was her usual happy and jolly self when around family and friends."

Police launched a land, air and sea search for Rosemary, who had a brother Robert, 17, and sister Lucy, 19, but found no trace of her. Rosemary's mother, Jennifer, 47, wrote on the newspaper forum: "I will be grieving for my beloved daughter for the rest of my life.

"She is dead and I don't know why and nor does anyone else.

"People always look for blame and answers but sometimes there is no one to blame and some questions can never be answered."

Police say they are not treating the death as suspicious, or looking for anyone in connection with it. They will use dental records to confirm the body is Rosemary.

I don't know how far this story actually spread, but it's fairly local for me so I've heard a bit about it over the last couple of weeks. It's an awful story - I can't imagine how the parents must be feeling right now.

Watched him being revealed on BBC news, was wicked. He was very tall and he looks good for a dead guy. Course I don't mean that in a bad way, just been slightly obsessed with him and Egypt since I was 6 :P

Q: How do you ring an Egyptian doorbell?

A: You toot an' kum in

Crap joke I know, but woohoo, King Tut

/me hopes Tutankhamun will be coming to a museum in London so she can go and stare at him for herself!
How cool would that be? :D

Oh and Dr Zahi Hawass makes me laugh, in the middle of his conference he yelled "PLEASE SHUT UP!" Gotta love that guy

This is quite sad. I was thinking about turning it into a debate; 'What would you do?' but I guess if someone really is devoted to religion they wouldn't even break the rules if it meant saving their life. I know I wouldn't break the rules, however, I'm not a Jehovah's witness so I wouldn't know what it's like.
It's sad cos she wanted a family and now that she has two children, she won't even be a part of that.

Has anyone seen tonights news, on the abuse of mental health patients and disabled patients in surbia.
I am shocked and disgusted, how can anything so diabolic still be seen in life today, these kids and adults are encased in cots from more or less birth untill adulthood and then seemingly death.
They get fed, well if you can call it being fed, most of these human beings are stick thin undernorished unloved and uncared for, what the hell is going on here.
I saw a 15 year old girl laying in a cot, she looked like a four year old child with all twisted limbs and no hair, her limbs are twisted due to lack of room to move and no exercise, she never leaves her cot, i am sitting here in tears over this, i swear on almighty god i cannot comprehend what ive seen, im sickend and greatly touched by their plight in life.
I wish i could do something, what i dont know.???.
All i can think of right now is to pray for them and hope that these conditions will change.

A little boy was almost crushed to death by a piano (yes, a piano) when his older sister of eight or nine called 911. The boy got out with a deep bruise in his cheek and the rest of his body has recovered.

Article from BBC news (http://http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/west_yorkshire/7180097.stm) Steve Wood, health and safety manager for Leeds City Council, said there had been about 6,000 check visits made to public places since the ban was enforced and these were continuing.

He said anyone wanting to report a breach in the ban should contact the council.

What, can't the council officer who finds the pub breaching the law file a report himself/herself? What a lethargic council.

The Government has announced a change in its bid to improve Britain's "average" level of skills with a drive to create thousands of new apprenticeships and support for firms, such as McDonald's, awarding their own qualifications.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said a new "national effort" was needed to raise skills amongst workers and job seekers, otherwise millions of people would be left without work.
He also backed an announcement from the fast food chain, Network Rail and budget airline Flybe of in-house diplomas which will be nationally recognised training awards. Mr Brown denied the move would amount to dumbing down, insisting the courses would be tough and intensive.
He told a conference of employers that he wanted to see one in five young people on apprenticeships within 10 years, in a push to win the global "skills race".
Whitehall departments will be told to create more apprenticeships, and firms will be encouraged to target more girls for certain jobs, such as those in engineering and construction.
Mr Brown said that, a generation ago, a British Prime Minister faced tackling the global arms race, but today his challenge was the global skills race. He said that, of today's six million unskilled workers, only a fraction would be able to find work in the future unless they increased their training.

"A source close to the investigation told The Evening Post that Ibrahim is British born and had recently converted to Islam.

It is understood that he has recently changed his name and was living with his mother at 44 Comb Paddock, a council house he moved into in February.

Before that, he was living at St George's Hostel, a hostel for the homeless, and was on a drug treatment order.

The source said: "He was born and bred in Britain and is a convert to Islam.

"He originally turned down the property in Comb Paddock, telling council officials that he didn't want to live in a white middle class area, but changed his mind and moved in with his mother on February 4."

Don't you just love the way the council offered him a lovely place to live but he turned it down through apparent bigotry. I'm sure there are a whole host of average hard working people who would've loved to be offered a home in such a nice area. The mind boggles

Donkey Jailed For Theft

CAIRO (AFP) - An Egyptian donkey has been jailed for stealing corn on the cob from a field belonging to an agricultural research institute in the Nile Delta, local media reported on Thursday.

The ass and its owner were apprehended at a police checkpoint that had been set up after the institute's director complained that someone was stealing his crops, the state-owned Al-Ahram daily said.

The unnamed ungulate was found in possession of the institute's corn and a local judge sentenced him to 24 hours in prison. The man who had his ass thrown in jail got off with a fine of 50 Egyptian pounds (nine dollars, six euros).

Just a quick update, while we have power which we lost again last night. Torrential rains and the creek being blocked by downed trees caused us to almost be evacuated at 1am this morning. Our whole property was under several feet of raging flood water which, thank heavens, started to recede just as we were about to get it in the house. Front and back decks went under - it was about 1 or 2 millimetres off coming into the house. This all at 1am this morning, very, very scary. Have lost all garden furniture, most pot plants, two large wheely bins, and our car started to float away. Just thanking our lucky stars it stopped raining when it did. More storms forecast for tonight, tomorrow night and Saturday night with fine days in between - totally bizarre weather! Oh, and our Hills Hoist (rotary washing line) has been wrecked too! o.O

Anyway, if I can't get back online for a couple of days, you'll know that we've finally gone right under. Will post pics if/when I can, for anyone interested, but last night it was twice as high as my previous attachment taken Sunday arvo.

Hope to be back on again soon. Take care all of you.

It's just.. I mean, people were dying in their CARS driving AWAY from the fire. You'd think if you were driving away from it you'd be safe. It's unimaginable.

And all that wildlife.

It's the radiant heat of a bushfire. Cars don't save you from that. It's why they say stay with your home - not to "defend" as the media like to sensationalise it - but to be safer from the radiant heat. If you are going to leave, you have to make the decision to get out well before the fire is there. And it gets there........unbelievably fast.

Amidst the tragedy of the fires, comes this heartwarming image:

http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii163/_Saffron/sam.jpg

Sam became the most famous koala in the world when firefighter David Tree stopped to give 'him' a drink amid the devastation of the Victoria fires.

The image has provided a much-needed picture of hope in a week filled with news of despair.

Mr Tree said he was surprised by the reaction to the photograph, which was snapped by a fellow CFA volunteer on a mobile phone.

He said he was in the middle of backburning at Mirboo North when he saw the stricken koala.

"I could see she had sore feet and was in trouble, so I pulled over the fire truck. She just plonked herself down, as if to say 'I'm beat'," he said.

"I offered her a drink and she drank three bottles.

"The most amazing part was when she grabbed my hand. I will never forget that."

Ummmm this isn't really in the news but it occurred so it's sort of news, yes? Anything what occurs is news if we choose to call it so. :)

All of that money for something which used to be SO EASY to steal! :P (Not that I ever done that)

Whilst I've been typing this, the price has gone from £50,000 to £2,000,000 :o Gasps gasps, cry havoc.

Why do people have kids if they treat them like crap?:sad:

Dead baby girl had been bitten (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cambridgeshire/7922107.stm)

23 months old Brandon killed by his mother's boyfriend (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/tayside_and_central/7914592.stm)

Those who have their own kids who want to help society and do something good, have it throw back in their faces by none other than the social services

Social services criticism continues as foster child rapes baby (http://uk.news.yahoo.com/14/20090303/tpl-social-service-criticism-continues-a-81c5b50.html)

It's all bloody depressing :(

You may find this link (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/tyne/7935311.stm) useful.

On his birthday too!

Oh dear, it's the unfair assumption that any male who is a victim of violence by a female has done something to provoke it.
