I don't know about you lot but I like optical illusions and they can be quite fun. I've seen quite a few really good ones lately and I'd like to share them. Some are rather easy but they're amazing!

The telephone and magazine are glued to the carpet which is glued to the wall and the picture was taken with the camera on its side.

Very freaky! Here's the pic aerochick posted.

If your eyes follow the movement of the rotating pink dot, you will only see one color, pink. If you stare at the black + in the center, the moving dot turns to green. Now, concentrate on the black + in the center of the picture. After a short period of time, all the pink dots will slowly disappear, and you will only see a green dot rotating if you're lucky! It's amazing how our brain works. There really is no green dot, and the pink ones really don't disappear. This should be proof enough, we don't always see what we think we see.

And that green dot... I could see it while I was reading the instructions on the top, lol.

With this one, stare at the dot in the centre. After 30 seconds or so, an image will appear. When it does, keep your eyes on the dot and you will see a colour image. Then, move your eyes off the dot.
(If it took you ages to read this bit, refresh the page before starting it, because the image works in a continuous loop)

I love the animated dot one. At one point the moving dot just seems to wipe out the pink dots.

If you concentrate hard enough on the image center, after a while all three yellow dots will disappear! Don't believe me? Try it for yourself! It may take some time and concentration, but the effect is amazing.

Warning: If you wear contacts be careful, I was staring at the screen for so long my lens dried out a bit and when I blinked the right one fell out! :embarrassed:

Probably the simplest and easiest and oldest illusion around.

Close your left eye and look at the spot on the left. Move your head slowly forwards or backwards (depending on how close you are to the screen) and the dot on the right will disappear. Close your right eye, open your left, look at the spot on the right. The one on the left has disappeared.

This is due to the junction of the optic nerve in your eyeball joining the back of the eye. We all have two blindspots O.o .... be careful out there.

As for ICHI's candle illusion, yeah, I can definitely see it being painted on. It's a similar effect to those chalk drawings. Wish I could see that guy draw in real life... maybe someday - his work is AMAZING!

Also for that bottling trick, I assume that the bottles' glass could possibly create some type of magnifying effect and the objects maybe aren't really as big as they seem? Maybe? Also, although I don't know what the secret is, magicians in particular have their tricks similar to this, like getting the bottle cap into the bottle or something. Someone might as well ask a magician.

About ICHI's one, all I see are a collection of black squiggles on a white background, although if I squint and cross my eyes I could probably make out a panda face, lol.

I see it says "Get back to work" I actually like that. I can read Arabic but I can't speak it or understand it. The 'W' however, is made using the Arabic word "Allaah" which as you may know is God :)

One of them is sort of a floating head with no legs attached.. so it could be that the shapes happen to form a head without it actually being deliberate.

Yeah so here's some kinda weird/freaky stuff. I saw this a while back and it worked for me but I've not been able to "reverse" the illusion since. Check out this spinning girl, she appears to be spinning in one direction, possibly clockwise. However, if you kinda look a bit differently, she suddenly starts spinning the other way! :o

Same goes for this Ferris wheel, I just saw this now and it's a bit easier to see it with this one rather than the above. Apparently you need to "train" yourself to make it reverse. Weird, huh?

Wow, that's scary.
I had to blur my eyes for it to work, and I was surprised at the amount of colour in it.
I thought it was going to be Einstein at first.. nope, just a slightly scary smile! :razz:

I think what you said about the different thickness edge lines might be right, but maybe it's partly us filling in what we know should go there?

For me, the ferris wheel changes direction depending on whether you focus on the middle or the outer edge. The woman won't work at all for me. It's presumably more difficult since it's not symmetrical like the ferris wheel.

Hmm, I'm kinda stuck on the spinning girl one myself, need to make her spin the opposite way now.

When I first saw that illusion the girl was spinning *waves hands about* clockwise, then she went anticlockwise. When I showed nerdy the illusion, she just saw her spinning anticlockwise. Is that what everyone else sees? Perhaps it only works if you see it clockwise to begin with =/

Oh, that was weird. Just now I saw her spinning anticlockwise, for a split few seconds, and then it turned to just clockwise O_o

For it to turn anti-clockwise i must focus on that image from a point out of that image. (e.g look at that big blank space next to the pic for a while, then u'll notice it start turning anti-clockwise)

Ooh, spot the difference, I likes it. I used to do them all the time when I was a kid, it's been so many years. Although that could be because I have an addiction for proper brain puzzles now. As I write this I have 6 on my desktop, three of which are actually working and three different brain puzzles on the net up.

Anyhoo, that first spot the difference, is it me or did that man reading the newspapers look like they were reflections of him? Or were they reflections of him and that was the difference? If not, I may be looking at optical illusions way too much :eek:

I got the girl to spin clockwise again, I finally figured out how to do it. I just turned tilted my head all the way to the right so I was watching the screen upside down and then when I looked at the screen the right way up she'd changed after a couple of seconds. Silly cow changes directions very quickly.

Oh yeah, thankfully nerdy wasn't here to see me do that, she's downstairs having dinner with mr nerdy
