Hi,
I recently discussed with Peter the idea of adding a sports section on this site.
I believe that it would the best option to ask the members of the forum whether you are in agreement with this or not.
There will be two things to do. There will be a poll to answer if you are in/not in favour of a new sports section and I would also welcome your views on it in more detail.
What I would do is to propose a format of how me, Nexus and Giovanni would like the section to be laid out and we would like to hear your opinions on it.
If you agree then please say so. If you don't agree, then please tell us why. If you are in favour but disagree with certain aspects or wish to see other stuff, then please give your suggestions.
What I will do now is to propose our format and we will welcome your responses
We believe that football should be on it's own, since it is a worldwide sport and the most popular sport in the world.
We will cover club and international football in all countries, and talk about matches/transfer/players of future... anything you can think of (male/female football)
Other section will be specified for US (North American) based sports, such as baseball, hockey, basketball, football (american) and any other suggestions
The other sections will remain to other sports which we consider as not as popular but that is why we would like your suggestions.
There will be one more section which is to send your photos at sporting events. Many of us have been to different stadia and cities on sporting events and we would like for you to send us your pictures on these sporting occasions.
We hope that you read this carefully and use the poll in a fair manner, true to your own personal opinion.
Thank you for reading and we will appreciate your responses

I'd like it. Could be made a subforum of the debate board.. after all we're only going to end up fighting on who's going to win this and that and who's the best or worst player of every league.
So yea. 08-09 NHL - Sens ftw.

So true, but we loves fights, don't we?
I'm joking! I took notice of your message 2.0 =p

I think it's a good idea although it may not be wise splitting into sub-forums if there won't be a lot of posting there.
Perhaps it would be best to divide it by the most popular sports then have the other posts in the top sport section.
So something like:
Sport
-Football (Soccer)
-American Football
-Hockey
-Basketball
I happen to agree that it's a good idea, maybe the best way to find out how much use it gets is to set it up as a test, if the sub forums don't get much use, their post can be moved to the parent sports forum, and the sub forums removed.

El_Nino says that I have to respond to this thread because I voted.
I voted yes because ummm....it would take all of your silly sports off of the main forum so I don't have to look at unread threads and feel guilty for not reading them!!
But probably a good idea to do this....although I think it would be more fair to just separate it into separate sports because you CAN'T lump hockey, football, baseball, and basketball together just because they're American

While that's a very detailed post and clearly some thought has gone into it, I have to ask - what exactly do you mean by 'section'? Do you mean
a) it has it's own section like the Arcade Games section in Forum Games? or
b) Sports going to be as major a section as General Discussion, for example?
If (a), then that is something I would be in favour of, because I like categorizing things and would much rather have everything that's related in one section instead of going into, say, General Discussion, and navigating through 40 threads just so I can peruse all the Sport-related talk. I imagine if this section doesn't get created, the topics proposed will still get created anyway as threads in either General Discussion, Humour and Debate, or Media. It would look neater to have a place where one can find all Sport related threads - like the ones that have been recently created in General Dicussion and Humour and Debate. On the other hand (thinking two steps ahead here), if the Sport section were in General Discussion, and a thread like Nadal vs. Federer which CaptSparrow created, came up, then it would probably be more at home in Humour and Debate than a sub section in General Discussion -- so maybe the better section to put the Sport section into would be in Humour and Debate, as it's a little more all-encompassing.
Having said all that in favour of the Sport section, Sports, Music, Art, Culture are all topics that come up in daily life so if there were a Sports section, I would want to see Music, Arts, Culture section as well. As far as the content you're suggesting goes, I'm not sure whether the Sport section will have a long enough lifespan, for the effort that goes into creating it and maintaining it, to be rewarded.
If (b), then I would have to ask for a Music, Arts, Culture section to be created as well, for consistency's sake, but I think that will make the forum more complicated on the home page, so I wouldn't really want this layout.
Didn't realize I wrote a mini-thesis already! Woops.
Edit: *makes note to self to be more succinct next time* :P

Sorry storm, I can't be bothered to read all that.
I'll let the mods do it for me. I'm too lazy after writing all that

I agree....cater to the sports fans, you have to also cater to the arts and culture people. Would take a lot of effort, but then what would be left for General Discussion? Take the sports, music, art, and culture away from general discussion, and what do you have left?

You'll need to put up with me posting about snooker in there ;)
Edit: Also, I think the best way to decide if a new area is needed for sport is just to post about it in general discussion. If a lot of posts are made then it would be seen that it needs it's own section; rather than just making one and seeing how it goes...

Ok,
I never done web design so I would not be the best person to put everything into detail.
So, this is what I would like to do:
Football: Weekend / Midweek results (club and international)
Summer/ Winter transfers
All other miscellaneous topics
North American: Football Baseball
Basketball
Hockey
All other miscellaneous sports
All other sports : Rugby
Aussie Rules
Athletics
Cricket
All other miscellaneous sports
All those in bold will be headings and non-bold is subheadings....
A lot to work on, so this is why I asked for opinions
And I did read your post storm . . . eventually
That's why there's a debate, but I think sports is very popular, more popular than other topics. A lot of people on the site don't like sports, so yeah.... it's early stages. It's going to be complicated which is why I think Jobe suggested a trial
Sports can cover a lot of things, which is why we're looking at the best ways to try to set it up.
I think other topics, like music and that, well, I guess they'll use sports as a marker and see further down the line whether to try with other topics.
Please don't send me another thesis . . . I'm knackered!

The top-down approach may make more sense - make the sub forums as they are required. Especially since some sports are out of season...

Dw, I'm not gonna write a thesis. I think the points you make are valid enough.

Great idea!

I think the top-down approach is a good idea to avoid empty sub-forums but I can see Football (Soccer) having its own sub-section due to its popularity and the dwindling duration of its "off-season". I can't speak for the popularity of the other sports but I would suggest adding on the sub-sections if and when required.
As for the Sports section's location, I can envisage threads which would be suited to both General Discussion and Humour & Debate, but due to the more encompassing nature of H & D, I would suggest adding it to this section. If on its own it gains as much popularity as the rest of the H & D section, then it would deserve its own section

I think sports does warrant it's own forum rather than being a sub-forum of humour and debate because I can see sports being equally active as H&D if you get just a couple of avid fans of one sport.

Yes! We the Alpha-male (El_Nino is a part-time one) require a Sports Section.
Here is a taster...
