View Full Version : Picking your brains
Hi guys! We're a fairly international bunch, so I thought I would ask for help.
I am helping a lady with her English - she works in a chemist in the airport and thus comes across lots of English speaking peeps.
I am trying to write a list of sorts of the English brand names for some medicines - so that if someone asks for, I don't know - Piriton, then she will know they mean a general anti-histamine type of thing.
Anyways, I need to find out the names of some common over-the-counter medicines that people often refer to by their brand name rather than by their function. The English ones I can do by myself, but I would appreciate it if you could let me know of any American/Australian/Canadian etc over-the-counter medicines that people might ask for by brand name.
Just something like:
'Piriton - anti-histamine' will do nicely. I am especially interested in pain killers and that sort of thing. Just really drugs that are more often to referred to by brand than anything else. Once she knows the name and the general function, she can recommend an equivalent german product if she is ever asked for it.
Thanks!
Well, I can't say Im a drug expert.
But in Australia (Although Im sure some of these are US names anyway!) We commonly have
Panadol/Panamax/Panadeine - Pain Killer (I always ask for a panadol, not sure about others)
Herron - AUS brand of Pain Killer
Neurofen - Pain Killer
Naprogesic - Period Pain Reliever/Killer
Advil - Pain Killer
Tylenol - That annoying one always in movies - American Pain Killer.
Claratyne - Anti-Histamine
Telfast - Anti-Histamine
Zirtec - Anti-Histamine
Stemetil - Travel-Sickness Pill (I know I had HUGE problems trying to convey this to people when I was in South America - All kinds of Charades of planes and vomiting!)
Codral - General Cold/Flu Medicine (/flirt Codral - best thing in the world)
Demazin/Benadryl/Dimetapp - Also Cold/Cough Medicine
Hmm. That's all I can think of for now =) Probably find most of them are US brands anyway! Ha! =)
Good luck!
My Daughter works in a chemist Vik so i'll ask her tommorrow for a list of all the Australian brand over the counter Medications and post it as soon as I can if theres any specific ones you want pm me and i'll add them to her list :)
B... that's exactly what I needed! Thank you so much for taking the time.

lol, Capol rocks! :) My sisters swear by it. Sticky and smelly though. I can think of a couple of brand names, but those are more epilepsy pills, rofl. The others that I know have already been mentioned.
The real question is.. what are you going to do with our brains after you pick them, Vik? :o
UK brands are also welcome, I am sure there are some I wont have thought of!

Just a suggestion but with painkillers especially the active drug is important to know as people can have reactions to the wrong ones ie: ibuprofen, aspirin etc etc. Sierra is the only one I've noticed so far to include this info but I think it's an important thing to remember if you know it.

Right... Senacote - active ingredient: Senna
Result: Should help static/stubborn movements along - if after three days and no dancing movements... suggest a good ol' bowl of figs

Unless you roll your own... then there's nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar. I've always wondered how manufactured cigarettes manage to get all that other stuff in them... :S
Still, its probably academic seeing as I rarely see a pharmacy dispensing cigarettes.
