View Full Version : Racism..
I have my country set to Philippines and often I get comments about my race. People calling me wetback.. Or making other crude remarks. It's quite insulting and unnecessary of course. I don't retort but is there a way to alert an admin?

You can alert the admins by casting a "rude" vote on the offending player. If you want, you can edit your profile and remove the name of your country if this problem persists. Honestly though, nobody should have to do this because of ignorant racists.
Getting a rise out of others is what they want so it's good you don't retort as it also makes it easier for the admins to see who the instigators are.
Capture as much evidence of this racism to back your claim up when the time comes. Screencap every rude message, every rude drawing.

As Sierra and 2.0 have said; ignore the abuse, don't react to it, but do capture evidence if you can.
Make sure that, whenever possible, you also capture the offender's IP address with the abuse (type /ip then the name) - as far as I'm aware, feedback would require this information.

If you want something to be done about it, then the right place to alert admins is by e-mailing feedback (info@isketch.net). Also, I would recommend screenshots instead of chatlogs, because chatlogs can be easily modified, and screenshots less so, so screenshots are more credible.

removing the name of my country ??? he joined French/Animals (Easy) to flame french people... can't modify the room name...
and about screenshot ?? Last time I asked an admin he told me to use /ct to copy the text and /ip to get the ip.. which is what I just did.
and since a moderator edited my post I don't even have his name and IPs anymore.
GG iSketch staff.
Besides, the "text is easy to edit" is stupid.. I could show you how good I am at Photoshop and make you look like a ***** as easy as I wanted, so..screenshot or copytext = same. You wouldn't even notice it. But I'm not that kind of person. I'm the kind that wanted some justice to be done to offending kids like that dumbass but apparently this isn't the policy to help nice people here.

 I beg to differ - screenshot / copytext are not the same for obvious reasons (our lovely moderator edited your post).
People here are just trying to help you and point you in the right direction to get help (i.e., feedback).

It is probably best to ignore these comments rather than reply to them because people who like to insult others thrive on a response.
I have reacted to people's insults in the past and I wouldn't blame you if you did but the best way to react is to ignore the disgusting comments people make and their abusive language and search for an admin.
Take screenshots along with an ip till an admin appears of save it for another time so admin can look out for these players and see if their abuse continues.
We all want to play peacefully without rude people interupting the game because they feel it is fun to upset people in whatveer way they can, whether it is insulting them verbally, spreading lies and rumours involving other players and racist remarks.
Don't feel too upset about it becuse they are only words and can do no harm to you at all :)

That's very true and you don't even need to be good at photoshop. A complete idiot could make a convincing screenshot just using microsoft paint.
However, screenshots are perceived as reliable and just having a copy of the text is not. The reason is that screenshots look real and copytext just looks untrustworthy.
In my opinion, the main reason is that copytext looks no different from just writing it from scratch; not because it can be editted so easily.
Also: I don't honestly think you need to vote someone out just for saying they hate French people.

In her defence, Sierra suggested removing Philippines from Nina's profile, not from your screenshots/chatlogs and so on. This was because, sadly, there are idiots who target people because of their location and, when playing in a general room, this may help avoid such abuse - it shouldn't be necessary, no, but we don't live in an ideal world. Unfortunately, when playing in a room with a country in the title, such as Animals French, this wouldn't be an option. I've grown accustomed to players, generally American kids it seems, regularly joining UK rooms to abuse Brits ... usually the best defence is to ignore them.
With regards your particular problem; other than ignoring them or kicking them out (which hopefully alerts an admin) your best bet is to screenshot all the abuse, including the abuser's IP address and send it to feedback. I'd also advise not antagonising the abuser by replying to them, just let them hang themselves with abuse as you capture it all.

domfr30, there's also an argument for using the ignore tool. If I'm faced with a room full of, putting it politely, pillocks, I just type /ignore unsername for the empty vessels with lots of sound. This stops them bugging me throughout the game. Your more diehard iSketch PITA might try changing names to get by this, but as long as you use /ignore and don't speak to them there's no reason for them to think their attention-seeking behaviour isn't being gratified.

I am not 'iSketch staff'. If you'd taken the time to read any part of the forum before posting you would know that this is NOT an official iSketch forum dealing with official iSketch matters. If you'd taken the time to read the T and C's of this site you would have realised that posting names and IP addresses is against the rules. I explained to you very politely in a PM that Feedback is the place to complain and is the place to send your evidence. The fact that you blindly posted everything you have on here without saving any copies or anything is your problem. If you do contact Feedback, I'd say it's best to proceed without insulting their advice, or insulting them when they uphold the rules, which is what you have done here. Just a suggestion.

What bugs me about this is that so many regulars both on the forum and not on the forum give this sound advice out so easily yet they can't do it themselves. I'm not saying you specifically, Lumiére, of course, just iSketchers in general.
I've not played iSketch in ages but a while back when I logged on, I played with a few familiar faces who were the type to preach about the rules. These regulars were soon faced with some doughnut who was blatantly trolling and instead of ignoring they voted to boot the person out and cause a fuss. This made an Admin come in the room, which probably wasted her time and she could have been elsewhere sorting out a real problem. The admin was there for ages and a slightly heated debate occured about the rules and ignore feature.
I like the ignore feature, I just wish others would use it more often and practice what they preach. I've seen admins get fed up with this usual routine and it has made one or two log off. I don't think that's fair on admins tbh, and yeah, we do complain when there are no admins about to come to the rescue but what do you expect when people who know the rules give in to trolls and retaliate? Seems like /ignore is being ignored.

I see your point AJ, I've seen people rise to PITAs and then complain about it. Of course, it depends what kind you're dealing with.
To my mind there are three schools of iSketchers who allow 'trolling' to divert their attention. The helpful iSketcher who attempts to teach the naughty troll, the sensitive iSketcher who is hurt by what was said, and the 'tinker' iSketcher who thinks, 'Oh, a nice new toy to play with' and proceeds to wind up the PITA until they don't know what day it is. This is entirely possible to do without breaking any rules.
Oddly, all three of these methods have their merits and as much as I'm an advocate of using the /ignore function, it really only applies to the first two kinds. The third one finds these pests part of their iSketch experience... after all... who hasn't got a story about a doofus on iSketch?
I suppose it depends what kind of reaction you have to the trolling... if it upsets or offends you, best to ignore it.
