if they get in trouble with that name it will just ban their IP and not the name right?

Welcome to the world of NON-Registered iSketch.

Suggest you consider something different or add another letter "r".

There are bazillions of arguments for and against registration - including whether or not people would pay to play, or if registration was compulsory - people might get in first and take your user name.

And yes it's IP based.

Maybe this is just me being picky but technically the name doesnt belong to you to begin with. Until registration is possible if it ever will be names are all on a first come first served basis with the exception of Admin names which are registered for security reasons which i shal not go into.

And to be even more picky on the technicalities side even if registration was possible you still wouldnt technically own the name, only the priviledge to use it.

well i wasn't worried about the name as much as me getting banned for someone else.. but it was said it's done by IP so I'm good. if you sign on another name do you buddies still exist in the list?

As soon as I see registrations available I'm gonna sign up as all you lot and sell the accounts on eBay... :P

I don't see why registration would necessarily incur a cost. Charging to play would require registration, but allowing registration would not require a charge.

lol ches,

However although I have only been on isketch a couple of years, ever since I first joined players have been talking about registrations, do you really think it will happen ?
I for one hope it does, but if it was going to have happened, surly it would have done so by now, perhaps there are reasons why it hasn't.

Jobe
15-03-2007, 02:04 PM
One of the main reasons i would suggest to why it hasnt happened yet is the possibility of 2 different people using the same name at different times therefore thinking they both have rights to it and that sort of thing causeing a flood of emails to feedback with similar situations.

I believe that registration would be awesome, and why it was never set up that way from the very beginning is a mystery to me. To combat the viewpoint that registrations would arise a conflict about someone stealing your name, I just have to say 'who cares?' Really, it's just a name, and as long as friends would know who was really who, and you had all your friends on your buddy list, it really shouldn't matter what your name is. The benefits that would come from registered accounts would outweigh the 1st grade quarrels about who stole your name.

Ha, I wish I did. But as for benefits, you could access your own profile from any computer and any IP address. A more personalized profile would also be possible. Also, you could always locate your friends on your buddy list without worrying if they were under a different name or not. Also, I'm fairly sure that the names on your buddy list aren't IP-linked, and that any computer that used that log-in name would appear as logged on under your buddy list: The registration would eliminate this problem.

Not true as even with registration your profile would be stored locally on your own machine.

I can tell you that registration is definitely planned for the not so distant future and is something that I believe Rob and the admin team want almost as much if not more than the rest of the players.

Great I can't wait.
Will it be first come first served ?
what will happen with all the tinkerbell's/ sexychick's etc ?
Also whats to stop someone registering another players name, before they do ?
Once all these minor problems are sorted, I think it will make isketch a much better place.

Think of it this way, when you registered with this forum, you can get on under your name on any computer in the world - same thing with registering on any site, that's really one of the main points.

And again, think about your account on this forum that you registered with, if you got on another computer and signed onto your account, you'd still have all your information follow you including buddy lists. This would most probably be the case on any registration including on on isketch. It's more than just reserving a name, it's all the stuff that comes with it. That's what I meant.

Not all websites are programmed in the same way - some store information on your computer, which iSketch does at the moment, while others, like this forum, store it on the server. If it's stored on the server then you can access it from any computer ... if not, you can't.

Is it possible to have a name secured so when you come on, some dimwit isnt abusing your name and leaving a bad taste in peoples mouths when you go to play isketch ? I think it would be good to have the name you want secured, so you can always come back to it. Thanks.

No, there is no way to have your name secured.. and this isn't the right place to ask, i suggest mailing your complaint to feedback, even though they have probably had thousands of others just like this. iSketchforum.net is a place for iSketchers to get together and get to know each other and maybe even have some fun.. there is nothing the people on this website to do to put registrations in place, that is up to the owner of isketch

Facey
05-05-2007, 06:58 PM
There isn't, no. But you can secure people not blackening your name by setting up certain things with your mates. For instance, we have a group that have a password for eachother so we know it's the real 'us' or, if you don't already have one, set up a profile so that people can see if it is/isn't you. It's always best to send a pm first to see if the player is who you think they are. I had an instance recently where I was sending a ton of pm's, had no reply and later found out that it wasn't who I though it was. I thought AJ was being a bit toooo quiet

Registration is something that it constantly discussed here. We're just as frustrated as everyone else but alas, it's up to Rob

I just logged on isk to play, and people were telling me they saw me in the cyber room the previous night!!!!

The upsetting thing about that is that people who know me would know it wasn't me, but Im worried about some random idiots who see the name Sapphire in there, and come looking for that name later coz of whatever that person has done or said or whatever it is you do in there!

I'm quite distressed. :(

Sorry I didn't get a chance to comment on that further. But yeah, sis AJ saw you in the cyber room. We both knew it wasn't you, anyway. But she did a profile check to see where abouts they were coming from. And their quote seems to have been quite bad, 'cause AJ couldn't even verbally say it to me. Fear not, for your friends know you well.

AJ has the same problem as you, but I tell her that it's her fault, too. lol. She could quite easily change her name to something completely unique to save random people logging on with that name (forget imposters...), but she refuses to! That's the only thing I can advise or say, sadly. I just wish my own sister would change her name. There are far too many AJs on iSketch.

Thanks nerdy I know. Im not worried about anyone I know thinking it's me. I certainly never think its the real AJ when I see that name in some rooms.

And the other Sapphire I talked to when I first saw her on and she asked me if I wanted her to change her name. I said no, cos, really , people can choose whatever they want to identify themselves as, and its not my place to tell her what or what not to call herself. Wish I had have now tho :(

Maybe I will have to change mine, but I kinda feel attached to it now! Would feel funny calling myself something else! Maybe change it to Saph.

Oh dear, yes I can see how that would be upsetting. Don't worry about the silly people who think you are someone else. You'll just have to very firmly tell them you are NOT that Sapphire. Or else tell them you are male, and see them run! So long as your friends know it wasn't you, you don't need to be upset. If anyone tries harrassing you over it after you have explained it wasn't you, then you must screenshot it and report them.

Actually, quite apart from the registration thing which hopefully will happen soonish, why are the cyber rooms allowed?

Very good point Vik, or are they user created ? if they aren't I personally feel cyber rooms should not to be a games site, but on the other hand if people wish to cyber I prefer them to be in there own room, rather than getting all smutty in regular rooms.

I like being able to use a different name to hide from certain people who add your name to there buddys list.

Don't you just hate that! I'm always in the cyber room and whenever I play in normal rooms nobody asks me for cyber! Oh, sorry, was that not the point you were making?!!!

There's one player I know that constantly changes his name so there's no point in having him on your buddy list! He comes to find you! (Scary!) But we know it's him because the profile is always the same and when you eventually spot it's him, the kisses, hugs and flirts start flowing!

There's another player I know that logs on to iSketch and sits in the lobby or studio, thus securing the name for most of the day/evening as nobody else would be able to use that name. However, I'm not sure how long the connection lasts if you go away from the computer for a while.

edit: I am not knocking players who do use these rooms.

My guess is they're working their collective butts off, developing a brand spanking new isketch engine and everything that comes with it. Patience is a virtue anyone? :D

I'd pay to play an iSketch with:

1. Registered account login name and password
2. Personal in-game player profile and record (and records :P) with options to show/hide stats and records to other players.
3. Protected screenname slot (start with one, get additional slots at events or record milestones or similar)
4. Option to play under any unprotected name while keeping profile, record, account name and password and everything the same.
5. Unlimited buddy list

Id pay for isketch as long as it was priced reasonably.

MsNerdinator
11-10-2007, 06:39 PM
I'd pay for it, without doubt. Well, so long as the charges aren't something like a million pounds on a yearly basis ;P

I think it's only fair if Rob starts charging. We've gone long enough with such a great game - for free. I can't think of any other free game that offers what iSketch does. There are tons of not-so-great games that offer yearly fees (that aren't worth it!). Maybe if I hadn't played iSketch before, I wouln't consider paying (because I don't pay to play any games - I'm cheap like that), but seeing as I know what the game is, and love it.. I'd pay, no probs.

Katie.Lemon
11-10-2007, 07:05 PM
I think that paying for isketch would take some fun away from the game.

For example it would stop a lot of people from joining up if they had never played the game before, for all they know they're paying for some really crap game thats not worth the money (if id never played isketch i certainly wouldn't pay for it). This would reduce the amount of Newbies dramatically, and for me, playing with newbies is some of the most fun i have on isketch, makes the game different from your standard game with regs, and is often far more ammusing (even if it is sometimes stressful!)

Also if there was less players.. there would be less rooms.. so less room options, and it would be much harder finding full specialist rooms (i would think) especially in the rooms which are almost always empty anyway!

Im not sure if i would pay if isketch started charging, this is for the reasons i said above :/ and also, i dont have a credit/debit card, and there no waaaayy on earth my parents would pay for it.

I supose it might be a good thing in the way that i might finally be able to get over this addiction, but yeh thats about it.

Yep, like the lemon said (the opinion thief that she is), even if I wanted to pay to play iSketch, the fact that you had to pay for it would automatically make it not worth paying for.

The same thing would happen if registrations were compulsory, lots of people wouldn't go to the bother of registering if they haven't played.

Maybe iSketch could make a "donations" option?

[...]it would stop a lot of people from joining up if they had never played the game before [...]

Or a guest option. it's tough to think of a good balance, but there could be a setup like this:

Registered players have access to Registered areas and Guest areas
Unregistered players have access to Guest areas.

Registered area would have ranked rooms (i.e. has full effects on player record) and unranked rooms (i.e. limited effect on profile: playing here adds to hours played, games won and played, and nothing else) - such as user created ones.

Guest area would only have unranked rooms.

The player profile records extensive statistics about games played, won, time played, average win/lose statistics, fastest game in ranked rooms, fastest guess, score vs. rounds ratio recors, amounts voted to kick, number of drawing turns, saved drawings browser, favourite room, favourite drawing tools, most used colours etc. I could go on for hours and hours on end :P

This way, players who'd rather not pay could enjoy it just like we do now, but
players who decide to play get a lot of extras in return, and help Rob maintain faster servers and everything that comes with running a game like this. Also, registered players could play amongst guests like nothing changed :)

The future could look like this....

Hahaha! XD thats excellent! although i dont talk anything like that ;P (i dont think) and still havnt grasped what 'o_O' actually means.

Theres some great ideas there though!! i love the 'Reveals' thing and how you can just shuv people in rooms hahaha, i can imagine that would get rather annoying though, lol!

and the fastest guess thing, i want that!
infact i like all your ideas for registered members! i still dont think i would pay for it though.

Judging by how half half opinion seems on the issue of paying, I think going by Java's model that registered players would still play in the guest rooms because half their mates would have to be there.

I am against paying.

As I've said before, I'd pay if it were a small fee like a couple of £'s a year.

I'm not against paying, but I probably wouldn't be able to -- it's probably more difficult for members who do not live in the country where iSketch is based if they don't own a credit card.

And I've seen many things go to ♥♥♥♥ once they asked for a payment, even though it was only fair to ask for it.

What'd probably work (and has worked for other places) is voluntary donations that come with no added benefits. Instead, the money is used to make it a better place for all players. Free riders, people who pay monthly and everybody in between.

I think they will happen because iSketch has made 2 rooms called VIP Rooms. I tried to go in there and I can't because it's for registered people only. So could iSketch be updated once again? We'll just have to sit back and see...

There are a number of players who have registered user-names who can use these rooms. I used to think only administrators had registered names but that isn't true. It's more than possible to put registrations in place as it's happening now, but only the select few are chosen, the rest of us will have to wait.

Well, I've had enough.

If some newb wants to log on as Saffron, and no matter how much explaining to them that they can f*** whoever they want under another name in Cyber, they insist on being called Saffron......I have no way of 'protecting' 'my' name.

So yeh, Thanks, isketch for a year of good fun, but I'm out.

This is what happens when a popular online game, gets it ever so slightly tits over head.
All of us should have the same respect but alas we do not.
So like the other masses i wait, its not a massive big deal to me really id gladly use unregistered wild cherry forever its never bothered me, but some people do care, and should be treated accordingly fair.

lol Yeh, yeh, so I played tonight
Damn addictive game......

Psh, Im still mad though. Java, yeh, it may have sounded a bit petty as a one-off thing, but you don't know the full history I guess - not going to go into it here, but one of those 'last straw' things. MrsSquang hints at some of it anyway.

Still - bring on registrations, seriously, apart from being a prude (which most people just find amusing about me,) I don't do anything to annoy other players (unless you count reminding people of the rules as annoying - but hey, Im nice about it )

Oh and yeh, probably talking too much at Steiny when he's trying to play....

And yeh, spacey, I think its the random element that really gets me - I know people who KNOW me know its not me in there, but, like you say, its people who randomly see the name in there, and the PMs.....gee whiz some people can be insistent.......

Heh, again, some people can just shrug that off and laugh at it, but, I guess everyone is different - then again, the world would be a pretty boring place if we were all the same would it not?

/me sighs and gives herself over to the magnetism of iSketch

Oh and yeh:
/me hugs those people who have been logged on as Saffron in the studio for the last couple of days 24/7. I owe you a beverage of your choice ;)

I knew it...
I happened to be on Isketch one night when I seen people in one of those VIP rooms. So... How do we become one of the chosen few? Is there a way? I hope its a fair deal and not just people that are chosen because they rub elbows with the right people, which is like politics lol. But seriously, I would sure love to see registrations happening and I sure wouldnt mind donating to the cause, but I dont think id like it if I was forced to pay to play. The only drawback I can see with registrations is if I wanted to be an anonymous player at that particular time would I be able to change my name?

Java

I can tell you that registration is definitely planned for the not so distant future and is something that I believe Rob and the admin team want almost as much if not more than the rest of the players.
