View Full Version : Tournament Room

I was thinking of suggesting to feedback the creation of a special room to play Tournaments where you had the option to disable certain things or have special features.
I mentioned some ideas in another thread:
players registered to play in the tourny
players logged themselves as 'ready to play'
an automatic timer was set to countdown once all registered players were set as 'ready'
option to disable chat (other than the ops) once the game began
option to disable SKIP
option to disable DONE
all EMOTES automatically disabled once the game beganI was thinking it could be another tab when you create a room - "Tournament Options" or something....
Ive only ever been involved in one tourny though, and Im sure there are some other things that would make it easy to run them....
Any suggestions/thoughts?
Game pause option if someone drops out.

Allowing the ops to mute players, having the mutings shown publicly of course.

Muting a player would stop them guessing, not just chatting. Seems pointless if there's a disable chat option.
On emotes, people can disable them in settings themselves if they don't like them so I don't think it should be a general room option.
Also, I think "ready to play" would just encourage people to take their time.

Yes, that's a good one.
Whilst there would still be some disadvantage to the dropped player (in that the remaining players might not be able to guess, but can still see the part-draw and work out what it might be), it is significantly less than the disadvantage they suffer from missing a few rounds trying to get back in.
Also, I think "ready to play" would just encourage people to take their time.
Not sure NoHints. From what I saw in Dean's tourny though, there were two incidences where players weren't ready despite the countdown etc from Dean.....and quite a few where the countdown was just about to start (ie Dean would say something like "okay all players come off away and get in their teams, watchers go on away....") and someone would say "oooh can I just quickly restart " or "brb". It would be good to have some way (imho) that players coud indicate: "Right, I'm here and I'm ready for the game"
I'm also thinking of the tourny operator who may also be playing in the tourny itself....having to try to remain focussed on that and then have a last minute BRB from someone.
The tourny operator would still have to set some guidelines for start times - such as the game starting within 10 minutes (for example) of the stated start time to allow for last minute late-runners, so maybe they should have the ability to de-register players who are not there within a certain time......just thinking out loud here
Keep talking XD

These all seem like really great ideas! It would be lovely to see this happen in the future. :-)

The point of muting would be to keep them from guessing nohints. If someone were to violate a rule of the tournament and become disqualified, a muting would be in order. Sure they could be booted, but maybe the op would be kind enough to let them stay and watch the rest of the tourney. And maybe there ought to be a way to only allow the ops to invite people in to the room so we dont end up with a room full of non tourney players to confuse everyone.

Still isn't needed if there's a disable chat option. Also, non-admins shouldn't have the ability to mute players anyway, because it interferes with the player outside the tournament setting; PM etc - whether its against rules or not.
I've actually never thought that the way tournaments were done at the moment was unsatisfactory.
Non players watching makes tournaments better.

No, certainly not unsatisfactory. I've only ever been involved in this current one - and all the suggestions come from that - I guess I'm just looking at having a room that will automatically enable some of the parameters that the operators choose when they set up the tourny (ie such as the no SKIP option), rather than verbal reminders and/or players possibly forgetting..
And maybe there ought to be a way to only allow the ops to invite people in to the room so we dont end up with a room full of non tourney players to confuse everyone.
Hmm I agree with NoHints entirely on this one, Nate - fun to have people watching, and fun to watch. I guess to minimise confusion over who is playing - usually non-players are asked to go on AWAY. I'm not sure of the extent of what is possible, but could you have a [insert technical term here] that automatically sets those who aren't registered in the tourny to AWAY once the tourny op sets the automatic countdown....

I don't think Nateman was saying that we shouldn't have watchers. I think he was trying to say that if only ops could invite then it would be easier to control the game. It was an etiquette thing before that players asked ops to invite people into a tourny room and didn't invite watchers in themselves. In Dean's tourny it was 'don't invite once it's started' - so no one invited whether another watcher, or tourny mods.
I think Nateman is suggesting we go back to only-ops-invite. Which IMHO, is not a bad idea. Disabling people's abilities to invite others into a tourny just makes it an easier game to manage instead of 20 people coming in at random times and tourny ops having to remind them each time to put themselves on away. If only ops invite then they can keep track of who's entering more easily.
I'm sure there are more reasons to support this argument, but it's a good idea so I don't think we really need to discuss this one at length.

I still don't think hints got what i was saying about the muting option. Disabling chat doesnt keep people that arent in the tourney, or have been disqualified, from guessing. Someone that is angered about being disqualified may try to ruin the game by still guessing or by spamming in chat. Thee can also be invited back in. kicking them repeatedly is a pain when a simple 5 or 10 minute mute would suffice. Also it would disable pm's, keeping them from cheating or harrasing other players. On that note, maybe disable incoming pms in the room besides pm's from ops or to ops.
Thanks storm. I sometimes don't come across quite as I intend to.

LOL Nate, who does?
Another thought I had, which isn't fully thought through, but I wanted to see people's ideas on.....
As well as pre-arranged tournaments, it would be nice to be able to set up a tourny room on the spur of the moment and have it announced somehow into the rooms - eg "Saffron is conducting a tournament in the Tournament room in 15 minutes. Word List - Science" and then anyone who was on at the time who was interested could register......
Yes, even as Im typing this, I can see how open that is to abuse
Still, worth mentioning....

It could always only be announced by an admin, and at his/her discretion. :) I like the idea of spontaneous tournys :)
And in conjunction with only ops having the ability to invite, known n00bs/PITAs can be avoided :)

That's hardly a common enough event to need a new feature to deal with it. Also, what I mean is that all these things will be open to all people - it would be very easy for people just to mute people for coming into a room they've made.
And the last sentence just confirms that you're making something that works fine the way it is way more complicated than it needs to be.
The majority of people can't even work /modify the way it is.
Sponataneous, mini tournaments sounds good. Of course, there's always the danger that 100 people will come into your room at once if a mass public message is sent out.

A seperate (or extended) buddy list for the mods would be handy, for re-invites.

Yes, that's a major consideration...I would be extremely hesitant to be giving ops any added abilities that might affect people outside the room/tourny.
Although, my assumption is that to create a tourny room, you simply have an additional tab where you complete the parameters when creating a UC room, which, of course anyone can do. However, it could be done in an entirely different manner – for example there might be a permanent Tournament Room, and players might apply to be tourny operators, which might come with a few extra priviliges whilst op’ing in that room.
there's always the danger that 100 people will come into your room at once if a mass public message is sent out.
/me imagines 100 people flocking to a science tourny

Yes that’s an option, although I know there have been times when it’s difficult to find an admin.

Yes, I wonder how this might be done….I have said I thought players should ‘register’ for the tourny, so a list of those registered would need to be kept somewhere – perhaps on the ops buddy list to enable invites? Although you’d need to delete them all after the tourny? Unless that could be done automatically.
The other thing I was thinking of was in the chat area, some way of highlighting what the op is saying, so that important announcements are easily recognisable. So either different colour text, or the top two lines of the chat box being an announcement area that only ops have access to.
you're making something that works fine the way it is way more complicated than it needs to be.
Hehe, aww it starting to sound like that. However….something with the simplest options at least would be nice
