Well this game starts with someone posting a riddle, and the following people would guess. Whoever guesses it correctly, he/she would set the next riddle. Understood? Let's start with me!

What is the best way to send a letter to the Easter Bunny?

Let's see who's a riddle expert..........

Atreyu

is it Hare Mail? (I think this is more a joke than a riddle, no?)

is it Hare Mail? (I think this is more a joke than a riddle, no?)

I think my riddle was set too easy... And Atreyu, a joke is like this :

A guy walks into a bar with his pet monkey. He orders a drink and while he's drinking, the monkey starts jumping all over the place. The monkey grabs some olives off the bar and eats them, then grabs some sliced limes and eats them, then jumps up on the pool table, grabs the cue ball, sticks it in his mouth and swallows it whole.

The bartender screams at the guy, "Did you see what your monkey just did?" The guy says, "No, what?" "He just ate the cue ball off my pool table - whole!" says the bartender. "Yeah, that doesn't surprise me," replies the patron. "He eats everything in sight, the little twerp. I'll pay for the cue ball and stuff." He finishes his drink, pays his bill, and leaves. Two weeks later he's in the bar again, and he has his monkey with him. He orders a drink and the monkey starts running around the bar again.

While the man is drinking, the monkey finds a maraschino cherry on the bar. He grabs it, sticks it up his butt, pulls it out, and eats it. The bartender is disgusted. "Did you see what your monkey did now?" "Now what?" asks the patron. "Well, he stuck a maraschino cherry up his butt, then pulled it out and ate it!" says the barkeeper.

"Yeah, that doesn't surprise me," replies the patron. "He still eats everything in sight, but ever since he ate that damn cue ball he measures everything first!"

I'd have to set harder jokes next time... I'll leave it all to you then, Atreyu.

/me hugs Charlotte

Marys father has five daughters: Nana, Nene, Nini, and Nono.
What is the fifth daughters name?

Ches
30-12-2007, 07:22 AM
/me sings "Me Nono small robot you know, friend of Ulysses.... ooooohoooohoooohooohooh."

Would it be Nunu? (going with vowels in alphabetical order)

Atreyu
30-12-2007, 07:27 AM
.......Nope. :?:

Charlotte!
30-12-2007, 07:40 AM
Atreyu! I know the answer! :S I've seen this one before...

The answer is Mary?

Atreyu
30-12-2007, 07:43 AM
Correct> Good Job!

Mary's Father has 5 daughters...

What is something that - Lives without a body, hears without ears, speaks without a mouth, to which the air alone gives birth?

This is a tricky one...

Nateman
30-12-2007, 12:55 PM
is it wind?

Charlotte!
30-12-2007, 01:22 PM
Hmmm... that's pretty close but the answer is...

NO.

 Keep on guessing!

What is something that - Lives without a body, hears without ears, speaks without a mouth, to which the air alone gives birth?

This is a tricky one... :twisted:An Echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, echo...

Charlotte!
30-12-2007, 03:32 PM
/me gives *AJ* a huge huge hear-hear!

Well doneee. You've earned yourself an opputunity to set the next riddle!

Go on, we're waiting...

Ches
30-12-2007, 04:06 PM
An echo? I don't get it....

Lives without a body? - Lives as in exists, not as in alive. Ok then... I get that bit.

hears without ears? - How does an echo hear? :S

speaks without a mouth? - Ok... so we can hear it, this must be it's 'voice'?

to which the air alone gives birth? - If it was just air, there would be no echo. The sound needs something to bounce off of, doesn't it?

I think I'm just no good at riddles! hehe

Nateman
30-12-2007, 04:08 PM
even I refrained from being that much of a smartass. thats gotta tell you something :P

Charlotte!
30-12-2007, 04:15 PM
An echo? I don't get it....

hears without ears? - How does an echo hear? :S

I think I'm just no good at riddles! hehe

lol Ches... Well, it hears without ears cuz it has no ears? *shrugs*

I myself ain't good at riddles, just happened to think of the word, 'riddles' and popped in this thread.

Ches
30-12-2007, 04:17 PM
Right. As AJ isn't about, here's a riddle that's round about my level :D

What cheese is made backwards?

Nateman
30-12-2007, 04:19 PM
easy!!! edam. and yummy it is

Ches
30-12-2007, 04:25 PM
Well done you... ok then. Lets have a coupla nautical questions:

If, from a blue boat, you drop a yellow hat into the red sea, what does it become?

and

What kind of stones can not be found in the ocean?

Nateman
30-12-2007, 04:26 PM
it becomes a wet hat.

whetstones?

Charlotte!
30-12-2007, 04:28 PM
Ches, it's stated that only the person that gets the last person's answer, can set the next riddle, so...? This is not a thread for posting riddles whenever you want to. Create another thread if you want to.

Ches
30-12-2007, 04:28 PM
and you said you weren't going to be a smartass :P

Although unfortunately, you're wrong on number 2 - try thinking opposite to what you got there. :)

edit:

Ok... thanks for the telling off Charlotte. Shall bear that in mind in future. Just figured that this was quite a good thread and shouldn't be sat here if AJ isn't going to be online for a bit.

Also, as nateman had not posted a riddle, I had assumed the path was clear.

Nateman
30-12-2007, 04:30 PM
dry stone im guessing in that case.

Charlotte!
30-12-2007, 04:31 PM
Sure sure... No problem. If AJ really doesn't get on soon, I'll pick another person to replace her

Nateman
30-12-2007, 04:32 PM
i didnt post a riddle because i didnt want to assume i was right :)

ive got one tho if i may be allowed.

Ches
30-12-2007, 04:32 PM
AJ is a lass. :)

and indeed dry stones is what it was. Looks like this game is on pause now though.

|| <-------- feeble attempt at pause sign. lol

Charlotte!
30-12-2007, 04:34 PM
All right... stop posting for the moment, post after AJ's back.

Nateman
30-12-2007, 04:38 PM

30-12-2007, 04:44 PM
Oops! Sorry Charlotte and real blokes in this thread :p I didn't realise I was supposed to set you a riddle too. Please continue without me, I usually like to figure out riddles, not give them :)

If I do answer a riddle, I'll post another so I don't get told off. But for now, please continue without me. thanks :)

I know a riddle where you have to escape a room

*AJ*
30-12-2007, 04:52 PM
Reece, do you mean a game? ^

I figured I should post a riddle (Ches totally didn't hint at me ) so here goes....

The maker doesn't want it, the buyer doesn't use it and the user never sees it. what is it?

*AJ*
30-12-2007, 04:54 PM

That'll be a coffin then. Heard this one before :P

I don't have one.. someone else can go ahead and post, and Charlotte this is a good thread but I think if whoever gets it right doesn't post a riddle someone else should be able to. As long as we don't end up with hundreds going at once, that is!

Si tasha, 'twas a coffin.

Some dude, let's call him Ches  was found hanging in a locked room with no furniture. All there was, was a puddle of water below Ches' feet. How did he hang himself if there was no furniture to stand on?

All right, but if it really goes into chaos I'll change it back to the old rules - the person would set the next riddle if he/she gets the past riddle right.

So for the time being - the rules are changed, you're free to post, but please don't post a riddle after a riddle has just been set.

I think I can eat all types of jam... except maybe printer jams or traffic jams.

char, does that mean i have permission to post a riddle? i mean, your edible jam one is still running right? ;p

Charlotte!
30-12-2007, 06:21 PM
Of course that goes without saying! Lots of edible jams I'll say, but actually that was meant to be 'unedible' jam so Ches gets a bronze trophy (cos it's an easy one) for getting the answerrr traffic jam

missN
30-12-2007, 06:52 PM
okay. i'm assuming the delicious pigs riddle is over ;p here goes! i gotta pluck this riddle frm the deepest pit of my memory. ahem

a son and his dad took the car out for a drive.. ta daa! they met in an accident XD the father was fine, but the son was badly injured. daddy then rushed his precious son to the hospital. quickly, the son was admitted into the emergency unit. the father in fact is a doctor, but is not allowed to perform the operation on his son (a rule whereby doctors are restricted from getting involved with their own family members due to emotional factors ;p it's true). so he said to the nurse, "i can't perform the operation cause he's my son. please find me another doctor and be quick". thus, the nurse quickly found another doctor to handle the matter. but in despair, the doctor came and announced, "sorry, i can't perform the operation either. he too is my son"

how is this possible? :) there are a few reasonable answers, but only one makes true sense :D

Sorry to tell you that you can't post when another riddle is going on. This may cause confusion to us and if there're too many riddles we'd have to point out which particular riddle they're pointing to. So this thread must not get out of hand and stay at place.

We'll get back to this riddle when the pig's riddle's answer is resolved, so please be patient, sit back and wait. Meanwhile keep guessing!

Okay -- next:

I fill each hole but cannot flow
I cannot shine, I cannot glow
I drink your life and give you sleep
Behind the stars, endlessly deep

I fill your nose but can't be smelt
Put my hands on me, I can't be felt
Go on, guess, take a leap,
Or behind your back I will creep

(I made it up myself, as you should do with these games!)

Stars don't have yawn behind them do they? And can yawn be smelt? Does it fill our nose? Lastly, a yawn can be felt, a warm air comes out of your mouth when you yawn.

Nay
02-01-2008, 06:02 PM

Time is a human construct, it can't do all that much :)

mm i'll guess vacuum :)
You've got a vacuum in your nose ?

space ? ??
I anticipated that one -- but space cannot creep behind your back. And it doesn't have much relation to the line "I drink your life and give you sleep"

Sorry, try again ;)

03-01-2008, 12:05 PM
darkness has to be it! :D btw, lmao at vacuum in my nose ;p ( just to clear any doubts, i meant the vacuum in outer space. haha but the real vacuum being in the nose was a good one)

Nay
03-01-2008, 12:08 PM

Reece: 'something' does kinda make sense, but it could be the answer to every riddle :D

Okay, next!

missN
03-01-2008, 12:25 PM
ahh kk. how does this one go again..?

i'm going to give you $1.00. you can buy a sweet for $0.10. for every 3 sweet wrappers, they can be exchanged for one sweet. how many sweets can you buy for me (maximum)? and the reason why and how, of course :)

sort of a simple IQ test.

tazcoupe
03-01-2008, 12:33 PM
14?.......

MsNerdinator
03-01-2008, 01:01 PM
Okay...

You can get 10 sweets for that $1.00. Then give 9 wrappers back for 3 more sweets after I eat them.. haha! So that's 13. Then you can exchange those 3 wrappers for one more sweet. 14. But tazcoupey beat me.

Plus.. actually.. you've said how many sweets do YOU get. So it really does depend on whether or not I was good and gave you those 10 original sweets.. OR if I ate them on the spot, exchanged the wrappers and was left with just one to give you. Haha! If I did, you'll only get ONE! (unless I was gonna eat that too.. but I should get to you with something :P) Or.. you'lll probably expect me to keep going to the shops and exchanging the wrappers for sweets after you eat them.. and I'm lazy, I wouldn't want to do that. So it'd still be 14.

I over thought that one didn't I? :(

Something tells me 14 isn't the answer though :/ Seemed too easy.

missN
03-01-2008, 01:12 PM
14?.......

you have to ans the "how" with the right answer too ;p but 14 is not the answer :)

tazcoupe
03-01-2008, 01:53 PM
is it just 10 then, as you never said the sweets were in wrappers

Charlotte!
04-01-2008, 09:25 AM
ahh kk. how does this one go again..?

i'm going to give you $1.00. you can buy a sweet for $0.10. for every 3 sweet wrappers, they can be exchanged for one sweet. how many sweets can you buy for me (maximum)? and the reason why and how, of course :)

sort of a simple IQ test.

Erm... Is this a riddle or a problem solving maths test?

$1.00 divided by $0.10 = 10
$1.00 divided by 3 (sweet wrappers) = 3 (R1)

So, 10 + 3 = 13 (Is it the answer?)

Is the problem supposed to solved mathimatically or the answer is nothing to do with maths? lol, this isn't an easy one if I get it wrong too

missN
04-01-2008, 12:10 PM
nah, they're all in wrappers. smart guess though taz :D

no char, the answer is wrong. technically you get 10 sweets frm $1.00 no? then 3 sweets from 9 wrappers. there's another sweet from those 3 sweets :) makes it 14 like taz's. but no, 14 is not the ans either ;p

it's mathematical/reasoning. i'll make this a little different. the answer is 15. but how? :D

Charlotte!
04-01-2008, 12:31 PM
Why... 3 sweets from 9 wrappers? O.O Wow. 3 sweets from 3 sweets? This is really getting me confused I'm not guessing anymore this is some kinda maths problem too hard for me to solve. So... Will post again when someone gets it... Must give that person a good clap!!!

char who is confused claps for (someone) in advance

MsNerdinator
04-01-2008, 12:37 PM
There was a buy 14, and get one free offer? :embarrassed:

missN
04-01-2008, 01:17 PM
haha! good one nerdy :) *claps* but no! despite the clap, it's wrong. lol

clue: it uses the concept of business. well sort of XD

tazcoupe
04-01-2008, 03:08 PM
So you say its 15.....
10 sweets from $1.00 = 10 wrappers
3 more sweets from 9 wrappers (1remaining)
1 more from them 3 wrappers (still 1remaining)
So that one wrapper....do you cheat and cut that one up in to 3 bits to get that extra sweet? :P

missN
04-01-2008, 04:08 PM
hahahha funny and witty answers we have :) false, sadly.

and you forgot the 3 wrappers from the 3 sweets which was from the 9 wrappers. that's another sweet and another wrapper there. so that's 14 sweets and 2 remaining wrappers, but people get stuck there ;p did i make sense? :X

MsNerdinator
04-01-2008, 04:18 PM
Yeah! I got stuck there! No matter what I do I'm left with 2 remaining wrappers :( I figured this would work:

$1.00 = 10 sweets
10 wrappers

take 3 wrappers = 1 sweet (1 wrapper, too)
8 wrappers left

take 3 wrappers = 1 sweet (1 wrapper, too)
6 wrappers left

take 3 wrappers = 1 sweet (1 wrapper, too)
4 wrappers left

take 3 wrappers = 1 sweet (1 wrapper, too)
2 wrappers left

2 wrappers! 2 wrappers! 2 wrappers left! :'(
Before I started doing that ^ I thought I was on the right track :/ Ah well. Another hint? :P

Edit: Okay.. does the seller keep one wrapper that whole time? heh.

Seller keeps one wrapper the whole time.
10 sweets originally. And 3 more after giving 10 wrappers back.
seller has 1 wrapper that he/she (let's not be sexist :P) keeps.

I give the seller 2 wrappers 'cause he already has one (after I get my 3 sweets) = 1 sweet (1 wrapper) and there's still a wrapper left (from those 3 sweets). I give those two to the seller (who has another wrapper behind the counter, lol :P) and get another sweet! Yay, 15. And because I'm only left with one wrapper (from that sweet he gives) I can't buy anymore. ROFL. :(

Can we just pretend it's right? XD

reecer6
05-01-2008, 05:15 AM
look, theres a lolipop on the floor.
/me gives lolipop to nerdy
is the answer 16?

MsNerdinator
05-01-2008, 04:02 PM
It's doing my head in.. I went back at it this morning, and even asked my hubby if he knew how the 15 came about XD

missN
05-01-2008, 04:30 PM
lmao.

next hint: nerdy's theory of the seller having the last wrapper is pretty close. not there yet though ;p

another hint!: come on.. you ppl do this when you go to the nearest mart to get a soda too! pretty sure :X

last hint: treat the sweet as what you are buying, the wrappers as payment :D

Well this game starts with someone posting a riddle, and the following people would guess. Whoever guesses it correctly, he/she would set the next riddle. Understood? Let's start with me!

I will attempt yours anyway.

You smash the mirror, pick up the pieces, use one sharp piece to cut the table in half. You put the two halves back together, and two halves make a (w)hole, which you put against the wall and climb through.

Most of them probably are... I said that answer because the riddle is similar to one I knew years ago, except that one had a saw instead of a mirror so it's probably not right. That answer doesn't work as well when it's written anyway.

Or you could have looked in the mirror and saw your reflection...

... then used the 'saw' to cut the table in half ;)

Right seeings I managed to get a few riddles right, here’s a riddle from me.
There’s a room with only one way of entry via a door and there is no way of seeing into the room without opening this door.
Inside this room is a single lightbulb hanging from the ceiling. This light is controlled by a single switch that is outside of the room, but there is also two other switches.
The riddle is…..How do you find out which of the 3 switches control the light when you are only allowed to enter the room once and close the door behind you?

MsNerdinator
09-01-2008, 11:06 PM
Have someone on the outside who will check the switches, and you can yell at them if it turned on? Hehe :|

i do apologise, i must have missed the bit which said 'if you hit the wrong switch the bulb blows' :P

okayy how about, (on reecers lines) you flick a switch on, then flick it off again, then flick a different one and walk in.
If the bulbs on, its the second switch, if the bulbs hot, its the first switch, and if its cold its the third switch?

I think NoHints didnt give an answer cos he already knows it. which means he posted in here just to show off that he already new the answer. yep that about suits his ego.

There is a tape recorder lying on the desk next to the man.

http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/9169/firingsquadym9.png

The graphic above depicts four men, buried up to their necks, about to get shot by a firing squad. We'll call them A, B, C, and D, appropriately.

A is facing the wall from the left and the other 3 (B, C, D) are facing the wall from the right. They all know they are 3 on one side and 1 on the other. They are also lined up in a straight line and cannot see around or through the wall.

They were blindfolded when their hats were placed on their heads, so they do not know what color hat they are wearing. They do know, however, that there are four men altogether and that two of them are wearing a white hat and two a black one.

In order to for all of them to avoid being shot, one of them must call out to the executioner the color of THEIR hat. If they get it wrong, they will all be shot. They are not allowed to talk to each other, nor is there any other form of communiciation. They have 5 minutes to figure it out.

After two minutes of silence, one of them calls out his own hat color with certainty. Which one of the four calls out his color, and how can he be certain?

After two minutes of silence, one of them calls out his own hat color with certainty. Which one of the four calls out his color, and how can he be certain?

LMAO. I know the answer... Nice riddle Saffy :) Here's the solution

Firing Squad Solution

Man 'A' certainly can't see anything, so it's up to the other three.
Man 'B' can't see much of anything either so he doesn't have a clue.
Man 'D' can see the two in front of him if he strains his neck a bit, but he knows that there are four of them in total with two wearing black and two wearing white hats. He sees one of each in front of him and therefore isn't certain which color his is. If he saw two of any color in front of him, then he'd obviously know his was an opposite color. But there aren't, there is one of each. So he keeps quiet.
Meanwhile, man 'C' can only see one color in front of him - white - and he initially isn't certain of his color either. But time goes on and he figures that if the man behind him saw two of the same color he'd have yelled out his color by now, but two minutes have gone by and it's quiet enough to hear a pin drop.
At this time he realizes that since man 'D' isn't certain then he must be seeing one of each color and it therefore stumped as to his own color.
So..... Man 'C,' after two minutes figures that if man 'D' is seeing one of each and he (man 'C') can see a white hat in front of him then he is most certainly wearing a black hat and yells it out....
Man 'C' saves the day.

Couldn't you just shoot yourself for not figuring that out?

LOL. I kind of... cheated :P

OK, I'm going to post anothery: (again shamelessly lifted from Raymond Smullyan):

Suppose you and I have the same amount of money. How much must I give you so that you have 10 dollars more than I?

(for anyone interested, the names of the books I have by this author are: "What is the name of this book?" and "The Lady or the Tiger" - both recreational logic and math problems - and are good for many many hours of reading.)

NoHints
19-01-2008, 11:32 PM

Someone else can post one now...

Saffron
20-01-2008, 12:43 PM
Well, no-one else took up the challenge.
/me opens up the Smullyan book, finds a non-purely-mathematical-puzzle so as Hinty doesn't get it too easily :D

OK We go to the logic puzzles: (from "The Lady or the Tiger")

There are two rooms. Each room contains either a lady or a tiger - it could be that there is a tiger in each of the two rooms, or a lady in each of the two rooms, or a lady in one and a tiger in the other.

There is a sign on each of the doors to the rooms.

Room 1 says: In this room there is a lady, and in the other room is a tiger.

Room 2 says: In one of these rooms there is a lady, and in one of these rooms there is a tiger.

Only one of the signs is true.

Assuming you would like to find the lady (not the tiger) which door would you open?
/me apologises for doubleposting......this thread has struck a chord :P

MsNerdinator
20-01-2008, 05:46 PM
I thought the woman would be in both :s or could be! The first option clearly states she's in that room. But the other one says that there is a lady in ONE of these rooms (which could be Room 2 as well, but it's only stating one room) and it says there is a tiger in one of these rooms (which could also be in room 1 - with the lady) O_o

I'm confused XD

But I'd open door 1 and probably get eaten by a tiger? :(

Saffron
20-01-2008, 08:52 PM
If the first one was true, the second one would have to be true too.
Open door 2?
Well done tasha
If the first one was true, then the second would have to be true, but it says only ONE of the sign is true. Therefore, the first one must be false, and the second true - so inside room 1 is a tiger.

But I'd open door 1 and probably get eaten by a tiger? :(

Nay

No, sorry!
I'll just give the solution then. The answer is Post Office.
Here's how the riddle works:

I will arrive after your work place -- a synonym for after is post, and an office is a type of work place.
Ink fills sheets full of blank space -- this like talks about letters, to give a hint
Home of the men from never before -- this, like after, is also a synonym to post. Post men, get it?
Giving you words from whom you adore -- because post offices deal with your letters
I have more letters than any word -- this makes use of the double meaning of letters, just to throw you off
Worry not, of the answer you've heard -- and this one is because I needed to rhyme something with the previous line :D

Well there you go. Here's a new one. It should be much easier:

Saffron
24-01-2008, 11:43 PM
Aww I'd like to hear another of Nay's too, but whilst he's thinking it up, can I post another Lady or Tiger one? Pretty please

There are two rooms. Each room contains either a lady or a tiger - it could be that there is a tiger in each of the two rooms, or a lady in each of the two rooms, or a lady in one and a tiger in the other. (but not a lady and a tiger in the same room).

There is a sign on each of the doors to the rooms.

Room 1 says: At least one of these rooms contains a lady.

Room 2 says: A tiger is in the other room.

In this case, the signs are either both true, or both false.

Assuming you would like to find the lady (not the tiger) which door would you open?

Room 1 says: At least one of these rooms contains a lady.

If false, then we have the only possible combo of:

R1 - T R2 - T

Room 2 says: A tiger is in the other room.

If we take the first sign to be false, then this sign would also have to be false - but with the combination above that is impossible.

So, both signs are telling the truth and therefore Room 2 has the lady in it.

I think Reecer has already got this really... but I wrote the explanation before I read his edit.

Can I just mention I wanted to attempt Saff's riddle with the hats? :O /slap char. What happened to trying without google? :( Aight, what's next? :D

If you can't solve it, try it with the help of google

What was that slap for
/me cries and runs to saffy's arms to prove her innocent
/slap missN!!!

EDIT: is the answer: they are both true? so the lady is in room 2?
EDIT 2: i'm sure that the first sign has to be telling the truth so then the does too

Is reecer6 correct then? If he is wrong and both signs are wrong..... I'm puzzed :S

As you said, we must find the lady. It's impossible if both signs are false, as you said: Room 1: At least one of these rooms contains a lady. If it is false... how are we going to find the lady at all?!

Unless there's a hidden door right beside them..........

Ok, I think we solved the other two, so I'll post a new one (please dont kill me :D )
It's not original, but it fits in well with the hats thing, slight change of context too.

Donald Trump is hiring his new apprentice. After firing all 13 of the busty blondes he wanted on the show, he is now left with 3 super-intelligent applicants. He has a simple test. There are 5 hats: 3 are white, 2 are green, and each of them will be wearing a hat. The winner of the competition is the one who can correctly determine the colour of his hat first. They can see each others hat, except for the third man, who happens to be blind, but they cannot see their own hat. When the competition begins, the three men sit down and think about the situation thoroughly. After one hour, none of the men have said anything, and Trump, who by this time is frustrated, asks "Man 1, do you know what colour your hat is", and the first man says "Not yet". He then asks the second man, "Man 2, do you know the colour of your hat", and the second man says "Not yet". He then asks the blind man "Man 3, what colour is your hat", to which the blind man replies "Yes, my hat is ______". He is hired.

What is the colour of his hat, and how does he know this? (Remember, all three of the men are super super super duper intelligent).

Ches

Ok... method to my madness:

W W W G G
Possible combinations of:
WWW
WWG
GGW
or permutations thereof.

Possible to see if wearing W: WG or GG or WW
Possible to see if wearing G: WG or WW

We can discount the possibility of either sighted men seeing 2 green hats, or one of them would have known straight away.

This means that both must see a combination which does not guarantee a hat colour. So - WW or WG.

As the second man cannot guess, then the combination cannot be: 1W 2W 3G, as the 2nd man would know instantly that he must have a white hat because man 1 had to have seen WG, and with man 3 having G, man 2 must have W.

This leaves the remaining possibilities:

1W 2G 3W
1G 2W 3W
1G 2G 3W
1W 2W 3W

Notice a pattern there? :) With all outcomes, where 1 and 2 are unsure, man 3 has a white hat on.

So - man 3 = white hat.

That's how he knew.

I think.

That's probably the most logical way I've seen the answer presented! Thats pretty much right - I would try and explain my logic but it would probably look more like an extended thesis :P

Iambic

Ok, I promise you, this is a long and tedious one. Good luck!

"How old are your three children?" the mathematics master asks a former student. He is told their ages add to 13, and multiply to give the number on his study door (which they can both see). "I will need to know more", the master says, after a few moments in reflection. "The eldest one is learning to play the violin", replies his former pupil. "Ah! In that case I can now give you their ages", the master tells him, and does so correctly.

How does he know? What are their ages? What is the number on the door?

MsNerdinator
25-01-2008, 01:08 PM

EDIT: oooh... the part about the violin - I don't think the violin is the clue...

Ches

I'm gonna double post. So nur. :)
When its confirmed either way I'll merge em up. Right or wrong...

Anyhoo... Here goes:

edit: Putting spoiler tags for those that want the fun and general sense of achievement for working this one out!

a+b+c=x
a*b*c=y
v=violin... haha. Took me ages to see through this. on with the game...

Possible ages to add up to 13:

1+1+11
1+2+10
1+3+9
1+4+8
1+5+7
1+6+6
2+2+9
2+3+8
2+4+7
2+5+6
3+3+7
3+4+6
3+5+5
4+4+5

I think that's all of them.

Multiplying each of those sets returns the answers:

11,20,27,32,35,36,36,48,56,60,63,72,75,80

At which point the ages of the children and the room number could be could be any of the above. And this is where I was having a block - but we take the phrase:

"The eldest one is learning to play the violin"

And completely ignore the bloomin' violin! The key word here is 'eldest'!

This allows the teacher to take the only number that occurs twice (the reason why he needed more information! He already knows his room number obviously!) and choose the ages that have an 'eldest'.

So 1*6*6=36, but no eldest.
But 2*2*9=36 - The eldest is 9. The room number is 36. And I need a lie down!
Hooray!

(If I'm wrong, I'll be gutted. lol)
