View Full Version : The Unofficial Official Thread of the Olympics
First off, the title is as such because i wanted to make an official thread for it, but i do not have official thread making powers so it had to be unofficial.
Anyways... the winter olympics have started! So I figured we needed a place to discuss what we have seen, what our favorites are, brag when our country wins, give excuses for why they lost etc etc.
Also I wanted to talk about what people are most looking forward to seeing in the olympics.
Personally I love watching speed skating, i think it is really exciting!
I also am looking forward to hockey, slalom skiing, and curling.
Feel free to post anything olympic related!
GO USA!

How do you like the lovely Vancouver landscape? My home province  <3
I really wish I was able to watch the Opening Ceremonies but I was driving and only got to my parents' house right before the malfunctioned torch lighting...but what I did see was so beautiful and made me so proud to call myself Canadian! I loved the fact that five of them lit the torch together (or would have if all of the pieces came up, anyway).
What did other people think of the Ceremony?
Absolutely devastating about the Georgian luger though...it seems so surreal, and so tragic.
I haven't watched any of the events yet...hopefully it stops raining at some point though so that they can stop being so frantic about the snow on Grouse Mountain. All I've heard about on the radio for the past couple of months is how many truckloads of snow were being brought to that hill!

Woooooooooohoo!!!!
In the Men's Freestyle Moguls, we won the first ever gold medal on Canadian soil...never before happened in any other Olympics that were hosted in Canada :)
Hopefully the glitches start working themselves out...saw a zamboni explode water all over the oval yesterday. *slaps forehead*
haha, congrats casta diva.
Ive liked everything that ive watched so far, fairly good competition, except for the luge (the adjustment, although understandable, did change the competition up quite a bit.)
anyways, i cant wait for hockey! (as long as the exploding zambonis dont stop it, lol, that would be quite interesting to see though...)

Woooot congrats to Torah Bright for winning gold in the women's snowboard halfpipe! First gold for Aus! I haven't actually watched a single event of the Olympics so far.. the time difference is a ♥♥♥♥♥. I may have to start now though! :D
can someone explain to me what curling is? -_-
from what i understand...
there is a large target like thing on one end of the ice. Each team takes turns sliding a large rocklike thing at the center. You want to be the one with the closest rock to the bullseye. The broom sweepers do it to try and make the ice slicker in front of it so that the rock slides farther or turn it slightly to one side or another. There is also strategy on trying to hit the opponents rocks out of the circle. Thats all i know about it, i find it really cool to watch, but with all the dang sports taking place while im at school, i havent been able to see it yet.

Apparently the German skip was right pissed off that the Canadian audience didn't cheer for her amazing shot against the Canadian team... I'm sure if she were on German soil, the Canadian team wouldn't have cared whether they got cheered for or not.
I've seen a couple of weird almost bad-sportsmanlike incidences...kind of funny. If I was even trying to just qualify for the Olympics, I would be pretty freaking astounded that I was that fortunate.
Also.....WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT for the Canadian mens AND ladies hockey teams!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's sportsmanlike, right?
@ Jenni, yeah Jmac's got the basic gist of the way curling works. Very technical, and incredibly difficult. My mom is addicted to it...I can't wait for the aerials to happen.
As much as it pains me to cheer the American team , I do have to say that the snowboard halfpipe was absolutely amazing, as is the fact that they took gold in the men's figure skating. Our guy came in 5th apparently, which is pretty awesome imo since he's only 19 and as rookie as they come. But I'm glad that the dominance of the Russian was cracked for this time around.
Im just waiting for sunday casta, when USA takes on Canada in hockey....
U!S!A! U!S!A!.... hehe, bragging rights on this thread for the winner?

Oh god, I'll be listening to it on the radio while I'm driving.
It'll be the same outcome as Salt Lake, I'm wagering
Go Canada Go!!!!!!!

ahhh...ok the guys in ice skating XD im wondering who chose their outfits :P
who won at salt lake city?
Canada won in salt lake, but this time we will upset them in their own place...
did you see how Brodeur let in a soft goal, and it took Sid the kid two shoutout attempts before you guys won last time?
whereas the USA won handily in their game yesterday...
couple that with the pressure of playing on your home ice, and the USA wins by at least 2 goals...
oh and Jenni, thats why i cant watch mens figure skating, those outfits make me shudder...

Ah, yes both mens and ladies won in Salt Lake, against USA.

Yes, our mens team is crap this year...I highly disagree with professional players competing in an amateur games. Some of our guys were playing NHL games until earlier in the week, with basically no break between....and I know that most people don't give two cents about womens hockey, but you can't ignore a 18-0 score! I'm not really expecting the men to deliver much, but the women are so incredibly solid, plus they trained for a few weeks this summer in my home town!! There's some pretty amazing patriotism happening in Canada with these games...I can almost feel the electricity through the tv, it's so exciting.
Very good race for UK in the skeleton! Our racer ended up in 5th, and her interview afterwards was just devastating. But a couple of hours ago, one of our men won gold in skeleton...emotional roller coaster for Canada in regards to that tonight.
Did anyone else see that horrific fall by the Swedish racer in the mens Super G today? Haven't heard the kinds of injuries he might have sustained, but it was awful to watch.

Blah....we're not out of the competition at least. Our guys were off tonight and your guys were on. (Edit: That sounds bad, and I've been thinking about how I worded that pretty much all day today...USA played a great game, and our guys didn't...that's what I meant to say :P)
Did you see how Robson Street was still teeming with Canadians celebrating anyway? We don't need bragging rights! According to the guy who was reporting on the party at Robson, the attitude down there and really everywhere is pretty much "What hockey game?"
We've had an up and down day today in figure skating. The mother of our medal hopeful in the women's figure skating passed away from a heart attack at 55, early this morning...she found out this morning when her father came down to the village to tell her. She's staying focused though and channeling everything to compete on Tuesday and Thursday, for her mom. So that was this morning, and then tonight our ice dancing team came out way on top with their original dance, skating for the gold later this week!

Whoaaaaaaa I'm sorry to double-post but the Olympics have been so freaking exciting for Canada in the last couple of days. Two golds tonight in speedskating, and some amazing stories otherwise!
Have you heard about our skeleton gold medalist apologizing to the Latvian who won silver, because he was so crazy when he was celebrating upon winning!
And then our women's hockey team had to give a formal apology to the IOC today because they cracked open champagne and beer on the ice after everyone had cleared out after the medal ceremonies. I guess they chose the wrong venue for their party!
congrats casta for your womens hockey team winning the gold (even if they did celebrate after). I am looking forward to this sunday though, when us takes on canada for mens hockey gold! should be a good game!

Yeah! I'm excited too...it could go either way!
May the team with the most luck on Sunday win the gold :)
The ONLY medal in the olympics that matters is men's hockey MUAHAHAHAHA. Right now it's 6 minutes left, 2-1 Canada wins. So sorry US.
But hey, good on our girls's hockey getting gold too.
Good job Canada. It was an exciting game, overtime and all.

SUCH an exciting game!! Good game, USA...you threw us for a loop when you tied it up with 19 seconds left in overtime! [durr....I re-read this post just now and it is very likely that I meant they tied it in the 3rd period! There wouldn't be overtime if it wasn't already tied...haha]
Here's a picture of Mr. K and I as the game was starting....
