I figured with the world cup just around the corner, I would start a thread about it. So, who do you think will win the world cup?

oh and as a side note the USA plays England first. Even though we failed to beat Canada at their sport (hockey) in the olympics. I am betting that we beat YOU guys in your sport (football/soccer). I am willing to make some kind of isketchforum wager on it.

anyways, lets here your thoughts on the world cup! post away!

I'm not usually a big fan of football, or soccer as the Americans say it. I do however get into the World Cup simply because it is a worldwide tournament and it's nice to support your country.

As for who the winner will be, my knowledge of good football teams is very limited, so I'm going to be boring and not choose anyone. Although, I have to be biased and say that England should win ;)

Ok. I'm really excited for the world cup!!!!!!!!!!!! (even though my country is sadly absent)

I think Spain will win it, their squad is just ridiculously talented in midfield and attack. They play the best football by far and also have three great goal keepers. I never liked Puyol at CB but Pique is pretty good and overall their squad is unmatched by anybody. That said, like Barcelona, sometimes if they have an off day and their passing game isn't working the can struggle like against USA in the confederations cup.

Brazil are second favourites, rightly so but it's definitely the least talented Brazil squad I've ever seen. They don't play with a lot of flair either, mostly counter attack. However Dunga has made them into winning machines and their team ethic is great. I think they depend on Kaka too much though and if he carries this season's form into the tournament it wont be good.

England... I think their first team is good enough to win it with a bit of luck but it's the options on the bench where they struggle. Rooney is the only striker who is anywhere near world class and if Barry doesn't recover, who I don't even think is that good anyway, they will be in trouble! Also I think they're still lacking in cohesiveness and don't really know what the best approach is to playing games.

Argentina have an awesome selection of strikers, Milito had a brilliant year and Messi is unbelievably good plus Tevez, Higuain, Aguero and Di Maria... The rest of the squad is poor though, they're playing 4 CBs and of those 4 only Samuel is good, midfield is pretty average and they're depending on 35 year old Veron. Not to mention they have a mad man in charge....He has struggled to get the best out of Messi. Can't see them winning it but a team everyone will be eager to see.

That's the main favourites then there's some of the traditionally good teams.. Italy have no top class players except Buffon, France have no chance as their manager is insane, Netherlands always flatter to deceive, Portugal just have too many great wingers not enough in the other positions and while Germans remain 'typical Germans' in that you can 'never rule out the Germans' I'm doing it!

It being the first African tournament, I think a lot of neutrals want to see an African side make a real go at it but I can't really see it happening. Ghana have lost their best player (Essien) and though the Ivory Coast have some good individuals I haven't ever seen them combine that well as a team. Maybe Erikkson can do something with them.

Then the USA, I like the USA their squad is respectable but it's a bit odd that they dropped three of the strikers they qualified with. Shame that Charlie Davies wont be there either because he's really important for them. The USA should get out the group then maybe a run to the quarter finals would be a good world cup I think. The England match will be interesting and though England *should* win I have a feeling the US might get a point or three!

My tip for dark horses is Chile because they play a very exciting style of football in a formation that I don't think anybody else plays (3-3-1-3). Look out for Alexis Sanchez 'cause he's really good. They should make it out of their group and may surprise some teams.

kk I typed way too much but I love football :3 and those are my thoughts!

I would like to know who neutrals are supporting? I usually go for Holland but am thinking about putting my goodwill behind Ivory Coast this time.

ps vuvuzelas are horrid. pps sorry x

Hmmm. I always find Cameroon interesting to watch due to their unusual formation. They all start in the middle and then just spread out and hide. This, paired with their dual-goalkeepers, often makes for very fun watching.

Australia move from the Oceanic Federation to the Asian one because the teams in the Oceanic region were amateur and pretty terrible and they have a better chance of qualifying for the world cup from the Asian confederation as if they win their group they don't need to play a play-off against the fifth placed South American qualifier which the Oceanic winner does >_>
I haven't really seen Australia play since they were cheated out the last world cup by Italy after Grosso dived... But I don't think their chances are good as they are in the probably second toughest group. Plus they don't seem to have any strikers of note and Kewell will get injured by a stray blade of grass...

South Korea are the best Asian team I think cause they have super Park Ji-Sung! Plus they're pretty hard working and well organised and that. Can't wait to see North Korea play, they tried to disguise one of their strikers as a goaliee but they got found out and now he's stuck as one, lol... It's pretty sad though, North Koreans will only see their team play if they win, which they wont.

World Cup fact I learned: 5% of everyone who has ever lived watched the 2006 World Cup final!

I thought about putting Australia in the poll, but they werent in the top 20 odds-wise to win the thing, so i decided to leave them in the 'other' bracket.

and um...soccer is not "our sport" ..... :P :D

its more english than it is american. I do not know a single american that has watched a soccer game other than during the world cup. And very few that watched a game during the last world cup. In fact, more viewers watch the WNBA than soccer in the USA. That is just sad.

whereas, in England, from what I gather, soccer/football is very popular.

Are you sure about thisss? According to wiki, 715.1 million (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_FIFA_World_Cup_Final#Viewer_figures) people watched that match, which amounts to about 11% of the 2006 population and this can't be 5% of everyone who has ever lived...

Lol, no I'm not sure. I just heard someone who is supposed to know these things say it and it sounded cool! HOWEVER having done some research it does appear to be out by at least a factor of ten :( You get like 0.6%. Not sure how accurate any of the numbers are and which were used in the original 'fact'. oh welllllll

There's too many injuries occurring at the moment... Robben, Mikel, Drogba, Essien, Pirlo, Ferdinand, Cardozo, Suazo, Palacios and I see Nani may miss it too now. I want to see the teams at their best not with players watching from home :(

Also seee the English press getting worked up over Rooney's temperament... Not sure why 'cause he's been brilliant this year without getting sent off. Think he's just mad that he has to play with Heksey or Crouch. England should just play him up front on his own like Man United did all season with like Lennon and Cole supporting!

I can't decide who I think will win (apart from England obviously :p)!

Spain have the best starting XI, the best squad players and have broken their tournament jinx in Euro 2008... BUT, no European team has ever won a World Cup hosted outside Europe. Although it will be winter in South Africa, favouring the Europeans slightly, the differences in altitude and climate will make it difficult for them. A lot of Brazil and Argentina players play club football in Europe and for the national team in South America so they should, in theory, be more adaptable to different conditions.

Being a tournament hosted in Africa, I would say that the African teams would do well but the two best ones, Ivory Coast and Ghana, are in the two toughest groups and are missing their two best players, namely Drogba and Essien, so they may not even make it to Round 2. I don't rate Algeria very highly and South Africa, despite being hosts, will struggle to qualify from a group containing France, Mexico and Uruguay. So that leaves Nigeria and Cameroon with the best chances of making it to Round 2... and then who knows!

England... Losing Ferdinand was a blow, mainly because Terry will now have to form an understanding with a new central defender (maybe two if Ledley King can't play every game). Hopefully Barry will be fit soon, allowing Lampard and Gerrard to concentrate more on attacking. They should be played down the middle, even if it means playing Rooney on his own up front, which he does for Man Utd any way. There's always the option of bringing on the other strikers/changing the formation if things don't go according to plan...

I think the issue with Rooney's temperament is that, if the team is not playing well (which happens far more often for England than for Man U), he starts to lunge in to challenges and gets worked up (as he was starting to do against the Platinum Stars) and the fear is that this situation could occur at the World Cup.

So, I'll put Spain forward as most likely to win, but, in the 3 World Cups I've followed previously, the pre-tournament favourites have never won :O

P.S. I didn't press backspace :)

MEXICO! What happened!
They totally should have scored in the first half of that game, and are lucky to get a point out of it after the post near the end of the game.

I guess overall it was good, glad to see that South Africa didnt lose and host nations continue perfect on their fist day. Although, I hope Mexico does better, woot woot go me-xi-co! me-xi-co!

on another note, did you guys see that Pizza Hut is giving a free pizza to anyone who lives in Ireland anytime someone scores a goal against France throughout the world cup? I thought that was pretty awesome/funny.

gt7278
12-06-2010, 02:34 AM
Ah yeah it was typical Mexico, all nice passing in midfield but nobody actually creates any decent chances. They could have won the game in the first half and could have easily lost it in the second. Great goal from the man with surely the best name in the tournament, Tshabalala! He hit that so sweetly, it was awesomeee.
The France game was awful, I hate Domenech... he's ruined such a talented group of players and makes them play the most boring and dull football, I will never understand how has kept his job for so long. Henry asking for handball loll..... All the free pizza in the world wont make up for not being there </3

I was the only person in the whole house that bothered to get out of bed in order to support my country and be patriotic. I didn't expect us to win, or even draw but with twenty minutes to go, i just wished it would end right there. I can't believe how embarrassing it was... a lot of times there would be a whole sea of aussies and like three germans and they may as well have been trees they were so useless. And timmy cahill's red card was ridiculous. there is no way we're going to win against ghana without him- we're a one man team without our man...

Like said earlier, watching football is generally not that popular here compared to other sports like baseball and American Football. Though I come from a household where the screaming announcer's "GOAAAAL!" still makes me cringe of literally every dull Sunday afternoon as I'm trying to do my homework with that terrible white noise of mindless chanting...sorry, going off topic.

Anyway, haha, I really like the world cup because of its international quality and the way it brings together a lot of people.

In my school, it seems to have garnered a lot of interest, and all the televisions in our cafeteria and hallways have been playing it during the day. It was really nice to see a bunch of American kids (including myself), all sitting around, eyes intent on the screen as we actually found ourselves genuinely into the game and the players. It was the first time I'd really seen anything like that happen in my school and it was quite nice to be honest.

Though I can't really say who I think will win or any of that, I just thought I'd share... :)

This tournament is really wide open, especially with some of the teams not doing as well as I had originally expected. Some people are saying that the ball is different and affecting the outcome of some games but I'm really not sure.

I watched the England vs USA game in a pub while on holiday. Such a good atmosphere even though I'm not a great fan of football. I'm not sure what happened with England's Rob Green, but hey, that's the way it goes sometimes.

I don't think he knew the ball was coming haha he even had his eyes closed when it hit him lol. that guy who tackled breciano should have got a red card if anything. I'm pretty sure the ref was an aussie hater :( anyway, I think we did really well to keep the score 1-1 since we played most of the game with only ten players. It was much less cringe-worthy than the germany match thats for sure :) even if we're only on one point in our group :P

I watched most of AUS v GHA as well and, although Kewell was unlucky to be in the ball's path, he did unfairly prevent a clear goal being scored and so the ref had no choice but to send him off. Well played though to the rest of the team for drawing the match in the end!

I don't know what's happening to England. At least in previous years we were moderately interesting to watch before we ultimately got knocked out!

I am noticing World Cup karma:
2002 -
Roy Keane is sent home from the Ireland squad in Japan/Korea for launching a swearing attack on the head coach.
Rivaldo of Brazil got an opposition player sent off by play-acting as though he was hit in the face with a ball.

2010 qualifiers - Henry's handball leads to France goal which knocks Ireland out of qualification for 2010 World Cup.

2010 -
Nicolas Anelka is sent home from the France squad in South Africa for launching a swearing attack on the head coach.
A player gets Kaka of Brazil sent off by play-acting as though he was hit in the face with his arm.

Couldn't have written it better myself!

I don't think it's right to say it wouldn't have made a difference if the goal was given. It would have been 2-2 and at 2-2 England wouldn't have been pushing so much to score so maybe Germany wouldn't have got two easy goals on the counter attack. Plus who knows what it would have done for both teams psychologically... That said England's defending was pretty embarrassing and quite naive and Germany deservedly go through. Can't wait for their game with Argentina now, it should be really good.

gt has it spot on. The disallowed goal would have changed the dynamic of the game but on the subsequent performance, England were woeful. I would say that we'll have another chance in 4 years' time but I said that 4 years ago (when we also played quite poorly) and, if anything, we have become worse since. With every passing tournament, my expectations for England are diminishing...

There goes my hope for a non-European/non-South American team winning the world cup. Aw well I hope an underdog can win it as it would be quite interesting.

I enjoyed watching Brazil being beaten, although it would have made for good viewing later to watch them play I'm happy Holland went through. :)

And penalties.. :// That was harsh. Especially the winning penalty, well you know what I mean.. That was slow kicked right over the dive. :/ Oh well. :)

The south american powers are out!

Germany has been looking superb, but i think that the Netherlands will take it this year.

don't feel so bad about losing to germany now after looking at the scoreline against argentina. I reckon they're going to win and there is no shame in losing to the winners of the comp :P

Germany is very strong and has a good team. Holland has had lots of luck. Let's not hope its Holland- Germany, we will lose that game.
Let's pray Spain will beat Germany, then maybe, just maybe we have a chance.... little one..

I hope Holland win as well, but Germany have been the most powerful team so far and will be hard to stop! They are a team without any real stars and this seems to be the successful formula in this World Cup (as opposed to Argentina, England, Portugal, Brazil etc.).

I enjoyed both semifinals. I think Germany got a bit found out tonight, they needed to try something different against Spain who don't leave that many forward. They never tried to take charge of the game and Spain played it to perfection really. Bit sorry for Uruguay too... if only because I really like Forlan and he's been my player of the tournament (Man Utd supporter >_>) but really happy to see the Dutch there! I don't think it will be a classic final though, despite the supposed attacking intentions of both teams. I don't think there has been a 'classic' game in this world cup really.

Olé, olé to Spain, good job.
Kind of nice to be able to actually watch it on basic cable in the USA and not have Minor League baseball be considered more important, I guess. I think the USA figured out how to fit commercials in it, so we can play it on basic cable over here.

Is it too late to vote in this poll, or has the competition finished?

Am I slow, mostly likely.

Did Paul get eaten after he died?

Calamari is nice, if it's not over-cooked.

What's octopus like?

Oh, just read this: Octopus is a common ingredient in Japanese cuisine, including sushi, takoyaki, and Akashiyaki. Some small species are sometimes eaten alive as a novelty food. Similarly, a live octopus may be sliced up and the legs eaten while still squirming, which continues for some minutes.

Nice! That'll tickle in your tummy!

Oh yeah, and Osama was right, England are sh

But Wales are worse. Unfortunately.

All attention now turns to tomorrow's match between New Zealand and Australia.

Lol SA! Just noticed this. I think it's accepted by most that Wales should be in the final.

Apart from one awful refereeing decision, and some bad kicks, we prolly would be.

Most likely wouldn't beat the All Blacks. Nice to have been there.

Let's hope we stuff the Ozzies and you stuff the frogs!

Wasn't there something going around last World Cup about England's fans' tendency to think the club is better than it really is?
