Edit: Okay, this WYR seems to have stumped people. So I'm going to tell you why I ask. I was talking to someone about the death penalty and the topic brought in guns and people. So one point was that people owning guns is justified because it's a good means of self-defense if someone attacks you, and also, if you saw someone about to murder someone, you are required by law to intervene and stop the murder (in America) (so you may legally shoot the potential murderer, and save the person who was about to be murdered). The opposing point was that, that law is screwed up; the public should not be allowed to legally shoot someone in order to save someone else's life, because it is a judgement call whether someone is about to murder or not, and judgement can be flawed (shooting should be left to the police).

So, as you can see so far, if you are in support of the law, and everyone followed it, the number of murders would rise because people would be shooting people they thought were about to murder someone. (I am referring to it as "murder" but you may call it "shooting someone to save someone else" if you wish). The "solution" that was proposed is that people should carry around tranquilizer guns instead of real guns, so that if they want to defend themselves or save someone else from being murdered, they could simply shoot their tranq. and stop the action temporarily without killing anyone. (Killing someone is irreversible and the public should not be allowed the right/liberty to take this action unless in extreme cases). The argument against tranqs was that there already is a problem with rape drugs, and people may abuse this solution to real guns, by knocking someone unconscious and then taking advantage of them.

So this brings me back to my question: Would you rather notice an increase in murders (because people are saving other people, by killing their potential murderer - it is legal to do so), or an increase in rapes (because the public are no longer allowed to carry real guns, but carry tranquilizers instead and abuse the effect of a tranquilizer)?

I would rather the rapes go up because once a person is dead, they are dead. A rape victim can, hopefully, eventually move on, as they will still have their life.
