Hi there! I thought this might be a fun new topic idea. Do you have a sixth (or seventh) toe? Do you collect rare bronze forks from Malaysia? Are you perhaps Stalin's long lost, yet never forgotten child? Well, we wanna know! Everyone is different and my favorite part of isketch is meeting all of you(well, ok it's my second favorite part...........). So if there's something that makes you unique, here's the place to post it.

You May Not Know This But...........I wanted to be Joan Jett when I was little.

YMNKTB (thought it'd be easier. xD) my middle name is chinese. it means 'morning happiness.' i was born at 9am. my parents were overjoyed because my middle sister, Michelle died when she was seven months old of SIDS. (this was before i was born.) my mother had had her tubes tied because she hadn't wanted any other children. she got surgery to get them untied, then had me.

my poor, poor parents, having to deal with such a stubborn, difficult kid. xD

this is my chinese name:
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/gracie_gracers/chinesename.jpg

the first character, on the top, is the last name. the other two characters are my chinese "first name," 'morning happiness.' (some people have only one-character names.) that's the name that i would be most commonly called at this age. unless it's by relatives, but that takes way too much explanation so i'll leave it there.

my chinese name is pronounced "Fong Jzoi Yun." i'm not going to go into the tonal parts. xD. the 'Jz' sound can't be represented in the English language, and very few English speakers can pronounce the sound. it requires putting the tip of your tongue to the back of your upper teeth.

so. that makes my Englishified middle name "Choi-Yan." i'm still slightly embarrassed of it from time to time, but i've stopped caring.

Ok, there isn't a lot that's interesting about me. But.. erm..

You may not know this but... I won a Blue Peter Badge. Haha. No, seriously. When I was younger I was in a local production of ALW's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. I think I was about 9 at the time. So that was why they awarded a badge to me. I've also performed with the Halle Orchestra twice.

Okay.. a little few things about me, following on from Sarah's theatre one.

In theatre I've been, among other things:

Rizzo
Mary Madelene (oh the irony)
The voice of Audrey II in Little Shop.

I've met Michael Barrymore :S

I've given out fliers at the Edinburgh Festival until 5am.

My sister was born when I was 15.

Erm... I can roll my tongue.

Fender probably knows all of those lol

I can fold my tongue in half, and I have two uvulas (that dangly thing at the top of your throat).

That's about it. lol.

I have nothing interesting really, other than my Great Grandfather was Julius Raecke, a physician and psychiatrist that at the beggining of his career worked with Mr Freud himself. He was the first one to describe and scientifically research multiple sclerosis (c. 1914), he identified hypochondria as an illness and he did a bunch more. I've been trying to get a copy of his book for years "Grundriss der Psychiatrie". He even has a syndrome named after him. That's as far as my interesting stuff goes.

I was born in the same hospital as a famous musician.

I have been on tv numerous times (mostly the news)

I have never shot anyone - contrary to popular belief (well unless you count a few thousand paintball rounds)

My grandfather's photo is on display in the Dublin Museum.

My wife's aunt is Slim Dusty's widow.

I once stood down a senior officer, then assumed control and coordinated a rescue of 90 octogenarians (6 in wheelchairs) from a pleasure cruiser.

I have rescued a truck driver from a flood.

I have been seen on tv telling a cameraman to f♥ck off. I was walking through waist deep swirling flood water with a toddler in my arms and this idiot decides its a great shot - so turns on his spotlight and I lose my night vision.

Thats just some for now.

Nice thread, aero. :) I can think of plenty for AJ.. But I won't embarrass her. You may not know this, but AJ is my sister.. *gasp* [insert dramatic music here].

I was born with crossed eyes, and 3 types of conditions of it (don't worry, I have 2 eyes, not 3!). Esotropia, hypertropia and an associated condition called Amblyopia. Ambloyopia is quite funky, because it means that you're not entirely using both eyes together. My eyes are individually the opposite in terms of vision too because of it. When I look at things close up (like reading a book, etc), I naturally look out of my right eye to do it). Then when I need to look far away, my eye switches to using my left (stronger eye). I do it without thinking about it, it comes that naturally (I don't even realise it unless I stop to notice what exactly my eyes are doing).

My long sighted eye (left eye) is getting very weak now, but I'm not allowed to wear glasses. Basically, when I wear the glasses, because the lens are close to my eye, it makes me want to use my right eye (the short sighted one) to look, and it does it for when I'm looking at things far away (though the glasses), which isn't the eye I'd normally use without the glasses. So it hurts a lot, and my eyes fight:P. I also find it impossible to put in contacts because my eyes are tiny. So I'll probably end up doing laser surgery in just one eye, lol.

And there you have it, that's the funkiest thing about me! :D I quite like it because I know to have all three conditions is unique. Of course, I've had 3 surgeries as a kid to fix them, and though my eyes are straight (one is slightly squinty still) the actual conditions are *still* there, you just can't see them. And because of it, I can do a few weird things with my eyes, which is good for scaring little kids! :) (and no, I didn't just smile about that ;D)

And because of my eyes, I had botox in it nearly two years ago (for medical reasons). Which I still seem to find amusing. I'm still living with a side effect though; I'm seeing double vision when I look at people to my left. That was supposed to go within 2-4 months (when the botox wears off), and it's still here after nearly 2 years. Ha! My doctors think I'm slightly freakish because of it. XD

lol, I could write a book about my eyes O_o. Sorry for the long post! Well done if you read all that, heh.

Which brings me to my YMNKTB: I haven't yet found a sound in any human language that I haven't been able to pronounce (though some are really hard!). I just checked out the Pirahã language to make sure. They have a sound where you flap your tongue against the alveolar ridge into your lower lip. (The alveolar ridge is the upper gum ridge, the ridge about half an inch behind your upper teeth). Yeah, I'm a linguistics hobbyist.

Silly interesting facts about me?

My great (umpteenth) grandfather was Henry Hudson.

My step-brother died of SIDS, at 33 years old. That's what they listed on the death certificate. He was playing poker at work on lunch, put his head down on his folded arms and died. His heart just stopped. His workmates thought he was napping so they let him be. No one knows for sure if he might have survived if they had done CPR.

2.0: I can make the clicks yeah. Though not so smoothly if you put them in words. The ǃXóõ language is much worse though. They've got the largest phoneme inventory known in the world. They have 83 clicks. English doesn't even have that many consonants. ǃXóõ also has lots of (what we'd consider) more normal consonants. On top of that it has [a e i o u] for vowels, which can be plain, murmured or glottalised. And they have four different tones (high, mid, low and mid-falling)

And if that wasn't enough of a challenge, they allow things like: /dʦʼkxʼ/ (if you can't see some of those letters this will do: /dts'kx'/) which is a sequence of:
- a t that starts of voiced (like a d) but ends as a t...
- a ts after which the airflow is stopped immediately
- a k followed by the ch in 'loch' after which the airflow is stopped again...

If you're interested in my nerdy hobby that scares everyone away, I've recorded it for you here > click (http://www.zshare.net/audio/24435212a82d5a/)

Gracie: the Jzoi isn't Pinyin spelling though is it? I can't figure out which sound you mean, but I may be able to pronounce it.

no, it's not Pinyin spelling, i just typed it phonetically. Mandarin uses pinyin, haven't really figured it out for Cantonese, which is what i speak. after hearing you do those clicks, though, i have no doubt that you'd be able to pronounce the "Jz" sound, or the "Ctz" . many English speakers just substitute the "Jz" sound with a D, Z, or J sound. it's kind of a mixture of those three letters.. so it's more of a "Jzd" i guess. hah.

And they have four different tones (high, mid, low and mid-falling)

four different tones? hah. cantonese either has 7 or 9, i forget.
one example:
Ctzeurng, depending on the tone and context, can mean:
window
gun
wall
long
to fight over something
sausage
sing
change (as in, i give a $10 bill for something that costs $9, and i get change back.)

There is a distinction between a plain T and a T with an h (with a bit of air, like the regular English T). Is it a bit like Tsh only with the tongue curled up more?

You Might Not Know This But:

I worked as a bartender and/or waitress before becoming a nurse.
I have lived in 5 different states since I got married.
I used to do volunteer work for the Los Angeles County Coroner's Department, helping to pick up and process dead bodies.
I am a gourmet cook, and like to prepare meals entirely from scratch, using fresh ingredients from my garden. (kind of hard to find any meat out there, though)
My feet hurt EVERY SINGLE DAY!

YMNKTB:

i have a funny scar on my left index finger pad. it makes my fingerprint look funny. my mother was trying to clip my nails when i was young. i moved, she took a chunk of skin out.

i can't put my knees together when i'm standing up straight and my feet are together. my legs just curve funny.

i have too many relatives. my mother's mom is a second wife, because the first one died of TB during WWI. the first wife had six children. my mother has five other siblings. my dad also has five other siblings. add their spouses, children... also, there was a huge age difference between the first and second wife of my grandpa on my mom's side, so i'm about to be a half-great aunt.

everyone in Chinese culture is considered family - that's why we call any adult 'auntie' or 'uncle' and any senior citizen 'grandma' and 'grandpa' even if they aren't related to us. it's a sign of respect. there are different words for 'grandma' on the mother's side vs. 'grandma' on the father's side. this is also true for aunts, uncles, grandpas, great aunts, great uncles, etc etc etc. so when calling a random senior citizen 'grandma' or 'grandpa', you always use the words for grandma and grandpa on the mother's side.

i saw a dead body while working in a nursing home.

About 20 years ago I won a competition by impersonating Dot Cotton from Eastenders. For those that don't know her ...

My prize was to be immortalised in latex as a Spitting Image puppet, which I still have to this day.
