Who's your hero?
Your wish is my command Vik
So... who's your hero, and why... have they influenced you? Changed your life? What is it you like about them? Doesn't have to be someone famous, can be someone like your mum, or a friend, someone who's helped you out, or been there for you. Be a nice thread I think... good idea, Vik! |

ooooooooooo! YAY! Thanks babe!
EDIT: Soppy warning! Do not read if you throw up easily! My hero is my gorgeous fiance! I moved to a country where I could barely say good morning in the language to be with him. It was decided very suddenly that I move here - we just had a good feeling about us, and knew we had to give it a chance. I've never been one for home-sickness or for shying away from a challenge, but even so, those first few days weeks and months were pretty scary - just going out to buy some stamps presented me with a ton of potential problems. I dreaded anyone actually doing anything so crazy as being friendly towards me because I wouldn't be able to understand them. I wouldn't say it was a terrible time because it wasn't - we also had a lot of fun, and I don't mind change in the least, but it was stressful at times. All the way through it, Mr. Vik was there, helping me, teaching me the best he could, and more importantly, pushing me to fend for myself. If he hadn't done that, I think to this day I would still be pointing to the bread rolls I want in the bakers, and holding my fingers up to indicate I want 3, instead of just asking and making myself understood. However, it's only recently that I thought about it from his point of view - I was too busy being stressed out before. Imagine how it was for him - to suddenly have a girlfriend living with him who needed a LOT of help, who relied on him for everything - who couldn't so much as answer the telephone for months! He also had to work everyday, knowing that I was alone at home in a foreign land. Our situation piled a lot of responsibility on his shoulders, and he took it like a man. I never once heard him complain about it, or sigh, or make me feel like a burden. For that, he's my hero, and I can't wait to marry him next year!

Has to be the person who invented the hair straightener
On a serious note, my hero would have to be my eldest son, He was born 14 weeks premature weighing only 1lb 15 oz (approx 900 grams) and his survival rate was very low. As a baby/toddler he had alot of problems , and was in and out of hospital alot, he didn't walk until he was gone two, and doctors said he would never be able to ride a bike, yet at the age of 5 1/2 he spend days and days falling off his bike crashing into walls , fences and bushes, cutting his legs/arms to pieces. but getting back on, and saying " how can the doctors say I can't ride a bike, it's me peddling not them" My son carried on with this attitude thoughtout his school years, he played in a football team, became an excellent swimmer, and as for his school work, he has exceeded what the doctors ever thought possible of him, he will be sitting his gsce's soon, and should get the grades to stay on and study for his A levels. To see him today no one would have ever had know he was a very premature baby, who doctors didn't think would survive. He is also a lovely person, He is so gratful to the medical team that helped him get where he is today ( although I feel alot of it is my son's own hard work, and possitive attitude) he is a ex prem research baby, and goes to Londons Great ormonds street childrens hospital every year or so to help out with their research. Master S jewels you are my hero |

What a special kid! I think when children turn out so well in adverse situations, you also have to applaud the parents for instilling them with such a positive attitude. Good job Mr. and Mrs. Jewels!

Aww Vik and jewels, that was so cute! Nice idea for a thread! :)
My hero is 'my family'? Is that cheating? I admire them a lot for having a few of their own businesses, and bringing up 7 kids, yet at the same time still always managing time to spend with us. We were never neglected. They are my perfect role models, hardworking and so generous and loving. They've had the biggest influence in my life, and have encouraged me to do whatever I want to do. I love that I can sit down and talk with them about anything and seek advice off them. They are the perfect cheerleaders (don't tell 'em I said that...). We don't ever argue, which is nice. I couldn't have asked for anything better than that. More than anything, I feel that I am the type of person I am, because of them. I like who I am. I feel content.. simple... happy... and it is mostly due to how they brought me up. For that, I have so much gratitude towards them in my heart. Oi.. I need a tissue.. ;) Last edited by MsNerdinator; 16-03-2007 at 12:40 PM. |

My hero hmmmm... Is it wrong not to have a hero?
alright alright... lemme think. ok. I have two, because they saved my life once, and i really mean it. Two Australians actually, Barry Marshall and Robin Warren. In early April 2002, I got up at 6:30am for an 8:30am biology final. I took a piss, passed out. My brother heard the thud, checked me out (I landed face first on the bathroom floor), called an ambulance. I woke up 2 days later with the worst headache i've ever had and a lenghty explanation about why i almost died, why i collapsed and why spent some 60 hours unconscious. Turns out that due to a poor diet, litres of pop and coffee, stress, sleep deprivation, studying and much freaking out, got my stomach just right for an explosion of growth of Helicobacter pylori, and I developed an ulcer in my duodenum. I had been feeling horrible for months before and i knew it was acid, but docs misdiagnosed it as anxiety and got me on oxazepam and antacids. Anyway, the docs in the emergency room checked me out, shoved a 3ft hose down my throat and saw there was an ulcer. The ulcer was about 5cm in diameter, round, and I lost a lot of blood from the ulcer in 12 hours. It had almost perforated the duodenal wall completely too, which would've most likely killed me, or got me through horrible pain. So they pumped 1.5L of someone else's blood into me to get me back on my feet, treated my small concussion, got me on antibiotics for 2 weeks and acid repressors for 5 years (and going strong). I take 20mg of Omeprazole daily, and i haven't had heartburn in 4 years. Turns out this ulcer was brought upon by favourable conditions for the growth of a small screw shaped, flagellated campylobacteral bug that screws into the mucus lining of the digestive tract. They thrive in acid conditions as they use the acids to their benefit. The problem is that they destroy the mucus, thus exposing the stomach empithelials to acid, not good. The bug was discovered in 1899, but left unattended until 1979, when Barry Marshall noticed that the little guy was always present in force in ulcer patients. So he did a little research with Robin Warren and proved that they actually were the cause of most cases of gastritis and ulcers. Now, don't freak out, but they're in everyone's gut, the problem is when conditions arise that allow them to grow. Their findings were quickly discarded and a defamation campaign started against them. If you saw the movie "The Informant" with russell crowe, you know what i'm talking about. But their research was solid as diamonds. They faced a 15 year uphill battle against large pharmaceutical firms trying to discredit them, mainly because if gastritis could be cured with a week's worth of antibiotics, pharmaceutical firms that produced and sold antacids would be out of a lot of profit. Finally in 1994 the medical cummunity woke up and started accepting that H pylori is in fact a big bad guy. And now it's standard procedure to test for the bug before anything else. But if they had given up their research out of pressure, i wouldn't be here. So, i'm very happy they pushed and pushed.

2.0 that sounds pretty scary... The longest I've been unconscious was for about 20 minutes. And even coming out of that with a killer headache was confusing enough.. 60 hours must have been wild..
Gotta love the medical team and their research, helping to treat/cure people with their findings. That was a nice write up, 2.0. :) |

Lovely Nerdy... it's great that you realise how lucky you are to have those wonderful people in your life.
2.0, I always wondered where you got your great perspective from... about what matters and what doesn't... I think that might be a clue. Good on those docs for campaigning against those companies. They'd kick Batman's ass Terra lol |

And actually this was just the second time i was at risk. I've had since the ulcer another illness related close brush (had type 3 dengue haemorrhagic fever, /slap stupid tropical diseases). But i came out on top. The first one wasn't anything medical actually, but i was a lot closer to shaking hands with the grim reaper then than i was when the ulcer or dengue, but i'll leave it at that.

Hmm I have quite a few heroes...
PimpdOutPope because he wins Tandem all the time with oodles of lag, he always comes up with a reply to my comments, whether it be "Your Mom", " 'Kay", "Hobag" or "I love you", I've recently come to notice that because he never really replies to stupid petty complaints I have I've started thinking about them on my own. And realizing it was really quite pointless. Also, he reads my "Yes, Tuesday", which few people do. He derranges his sleeping scheduel (..sp?), he tolerates my stupidity and builds up my previously non-existant self-esteem for me, and no one has ever been so considerate and/or loving. There's still much more I could say, but I still need to mention less important heroes! Matthew Bellamy of Muse is also my hero because of insightful lyrics, piano ability, guitar ability, singing ability and the actual care about things going wrong with this world. He's such a cool guy, I don't love him, he's just interesting. My dog Trooper, who had suffered animal abuse before we adopted him. He was thrown out of a moving car when he was just a puppy. We love him dearly now a days, and make him forget about what had happened. My brother, Mr. University, for being that 20 year old brother who I could brag to about grades in school, but also ask about problems I'm having. And heck, iSketch is my hero, where would I be without the darling friends I've met on there?
