With more and more people going under the knife, would you have cosmetic surgery purely just to enhance your looks/body ?

(please exclude for medical reasons/accident victims).

I have never had cosmetic surgery but I certainly wouldn't rule it out for myself in the future ( I do not want to grow old gracefully ).

Do you think some celebs have gone to far ?

do you approve or disaprove of cosmetic surgery ?

I have had cosmetic surgery. Since I was about 8 I had a mole on my chin. I always thought it was huge, but looking back on pictures, it wasn't at all. I was very self conscious about it and felt so ugly and weird because of it. It was really a huge issue in my life and one that was picked up on by one of two people at school who thought it was funny to tease me about it. I guess part of being a teenager is being very conscious of how you look and for me this all focussed on the stupid mole, lol. I had it removed on the NHS (National Health Service for those non-UKers) when I was 18 and my confidence rocketed from the moment it was gone. It sounds silly, but it changed my life for the better in so many ways and I don't regret for a second having it done.

The procedure was not done because of any medical risks, but purely for vanity, I suppose - and I can sypmathise deeply with people who lack confidence because of a part of their body - for example women who have very small breasts that they want enlarged, or who have something else 'wrong' with them that they focus on to a disproportionate degree, so yes, I agree with cosmetic surgery to an extent.

What I don't like is that society puts so much pressure on people to look like a certain standard and that some people take their already beautiful bodies and change them just to conform to that standard. Of course, when a celeb does this, it just makes the standard all the harder to reach for 'normal' people. I also find it very disturbing when young girls want to change their bodies to look like women when they haven't given themselves a chance to mature yet, as in some news stories I have read.

I find it refreshing to see people of all shapes, sizes and different kinds of beauty and I wish people luck and happiness in learning to accept their own looks.

I do think that when it's a matter of extreme lack of confidence though, that surgery is a good option. I still dream about that ridiculous mole coming back when I am going through stressful times.

Good thread, jewels! I'd never consider it. If for medical/accidental reasons then yeah, but you said to keep that out of it, so I wouldn't. :) Seeing my own mother grow old gracefully has made me realise that leaving your looks as it is, is the best way to go (personal opinion). And I know plenty of "older" women who look great for their ages <winks knowingly at jewels>.

I look at some women and think in my head, "don't you dare go for plastic surgery later in life". I already said it to an older isketcher friends of mine, lol. Well, I said no botox! I'm glad she's not the sort to do it. She's growing old gracefully *pervs* ;D

I have to say celebrities have taken it too far (again, personal opinion). Mostly because some are so very beautiful and I've found once they've taken away wrinkles, etc, they don't end up looking as good as what they used to. The natural beauty does get very lost. Wow, I just made wrinkles sound hot. "Go with wrinkles, they're the in thing" rofl.. Celebrities have turned into into a thing where it looks as though you can only look hot if you've had surgery. It's like a competition amongst them. And I think a lot of them have missed the point of natural beauty :S

And my opinion goes for botox too. I'd never have it done. Um.. I did have it in my eye, but that was for medical reasons (pains behind my eye). Never say never, eh? No botox (eye excluded) or plastic surgery for me.

awww Vik what a moving story, and infact since reading your post I now remember I too have already had surgery purley for vanity.
About 15 years ago I had mole on my arm which started to bleed so as a precaution the hospital decided to remove it, I also had another one very simular near my right eye ( very small) but this one didn't bleed nor did it apperar to be a concern to the doctor, however I did convince him to remove it aswell, it was purley cosmetic reasons that I got it remove.

I'd never. And I'd advise you to never to so either (unless it's better for your health and safety or if you had an accident). Al right, having a mole removed won't make you uglier, but other plastic surgery usually does, at least on the long term. I often look at photos of people who had it done, and you can always tell. It looks fake, impersonal and even scary at times. Your face tells so much about you; changing it removes a lot of the 'display' of your personality.

And you know, as you grow older the 'modified parts' actually tend to look worse because it's unnatural. Which means you'll have to do more and more and more if you want to correct it. In the end, you'll look like Jocelyn Wildenstein

Okay, Jane Fonda is gorgeous! See where lack of surgery and botox can take you? :) (not sure if she has had any, but I assumed she hasn't..). Totally beautiful, in my opinion.

i myself would never waste money on plastic surgery for myself. that's one of the chinese characteristics that my parents have pounded into my brain. stinginess. xD

if someone has a cleft lip, or some weird birthmark disfiguring their face.. then i suppose it's okay. or if the person is super sensitive and will have a ruined childhood and a shattered self-esteem because of their looks, then fine. i mean... you've all heard those stories of the people who become psychopaths and serial killers because they were teased as kids.

but i'd never personally get plastic surgery unless i was horribly disfigured in some car crash or something.. o_O

I wanted to add to this thread that whilst I am not particularly against plastic surgery, the availability and trendiness of it do mean that people sometimes forget that for a lot of procedures you are undergoing majoy intrusive surgery. That is to say having your skin, muscle and other flesh sliced through and your innards poked about with, whilst oblivious to it all due to strong drugs that make you unconscious. This is not to be taken lightly and I think some doctors who obviously make a lot of money out of doing this tend to brush over that part.

I'm not a big fan of my face but i wouldn't risk anything going wrong and making it worse.

O my where would i start........urm let me see if money was no object.

1. a nose job...i have large nose with a bump on it.
2. a tummy tuck ,on having 2 children no amount of sit ups will make it go away
3.a bottom lift ,when you hit a certain age everything goes south.

4. eye surgery im sick of wearing bins,

cant think of anymore yet give me time...

Ive no qualms about surgery, id have it done yes.
As you get older things do become a bit saggy and baggy, mr cherry loves all my pieces lol, but the surgery would be solely for my vanity and pleasure.
I would have things done like fat reducing ect NOOOO boob job as i dont need one

So far I can honestly say, I am shocked by the results but happy by them, I honestly thought the yes i would option would have had at least three times more votes than I am happy as I am, however saying that, just because someone is happy as they are at the moment that doesn't mean in thirty odd years time they won't have changed their mind. I think the results we are seeing are reflected as the forum has alot of younger members and even if i do say myself very sexy ones at that

I would have surgery on my boobs... even before I was grossly overweight they were always much too big for my short 5ft stature. Mr BunE loves em but i find them heavy and way too uncomfortable. Most people i know say that they would love to have my chest and I should be proud of em but I personally hate em.

Okay, I just voted that I wouldn't because I'd be scared if something went wrong. I don't think I would even if I were guaranteed success because, I personally would rather spend my money on other things.

But I just want to say that, think about it - you do lots of other things to improve your appearance: from shaving your legs (girls!) to dying your hair, to wearing makeup, going on diets... the list is endless. Cosmetic surgery is simply another way to improve your looks. Perhaps some of you will argue that it's intrusive, and you're physically changing your body, but so are a lot of things - getting a fake tan is forcing your skin to change colour, waxing is pulling hair out. Cosmetic surgery is pretty much on the same level, IMHO. I'm not encouraging cosmetic surgery, but I'm not going to be quick to judge people who've had it either.

You don't need to be depressed about some part of your body in order to want cosmetic surgery. If there's a part of your face or body that you're not quite happy with, then cosmetic surgery is just a method of amending that. Like concealer for blemishes, cosmetic surgery is just covering up or fixing imperfections.

Having said that, I do agree that some celebrities have taken it too far, and if someone is having cosmetic surgery in order to fit a stereotypical concept of beauty, then I think that's rather sad. The perception of beauty is ephemeral and variable, and trying to look like the face-of-the-minute will probably just result in disaster.

I also just want to say that I used to be against cosmetic surgery point blank, because that was the popular opinion; but since then, I've thought about it, and this is where I stand now.

i know im a bit late on this thread but i saw it and i kind of just want to say that i wouldn't have cosmetic surgery unless something very bad happened to me or my body, such as losing part of my skull (i saw that on discovery channel once) or having a very bad burn and other things like that.. if it was just to make myself feel better about myself... i wouldnt do it, if you can't be happy with who you are then you should try to get to know yourself better.

I can't believe that I just found this thread! As some of you know, I'm a nurse for a plastic surgeon, working in clinic and recovery room, so I really see it ALL! We get all kinds, from the younger women who have tiny lumps on their thighs, and think they need to have liposuction, to the woman who has huge breasts that have caused hunched posture, back pain, and created grooves in their shoulders from bra straps. I have to tell you, I sympathize with the women who have no breasts at all, and when you see the happy expressions on their faces after they have had their surgeries, it's a great feeling. We had a 72 woman come in with her daughters awhile ago, wanting a facelift, breastlift, and augmentation. She started with the breasts first, and will do her face in the future. She loves it! Sometimes when you get older, it's just nice to treat yourself to some new looks. You never know how you will feel about it until you get there yourself. As for me, *wink wink* job perks....free....need I say more? If anyone wants more detailed information about anything in particular, you can PM me.
